About The English-Speaking Union (ESU)
The English-Speaking Union of the Commonwealth is a membership organisation with a charitable purpose. It was founded by the journalist Sir Evelyn Wrench in 1918 and is governed by a Royal Charter, granted by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. The Princess Royal is the President.
The ESU is best known for its extensive work in supporting children and young people to develop speaking and listening (oracy) skills through primary education programmes, public speaking competitions and debate.
The ESU is an international organisation with a network of 54 national ESUs, each operating independently and according to its own jurisdiction. The ESU provides secretariat to the International Council.
The international headquarters of the ESU are at Dartmouth House, one of the most notable properties in Mayfair.
It is Grade II Listed and is scheduled as a building of national importance. The venue is operated under licence by Graysons, who run weddings, private events, corporate activities and service our members.
The ESU also operates a private members’ club at Dartmouth House, where members establish new friendships and networks through its varied events programme.
We plan to refurbish our Grade II listed building in the heart of Mayfair whilst retaining our heritage and maximising our opportunities.
We plan to develop our volunteering strategy and grow our network of volunteers nationally and from within our existing membership and new audiences.
Alongside planning to establish our fundraising capability to grow, diversify and enhance our education and membership offers and establishing our new fundraising strategy.

About the role
We have just appointed several new Trustees to our board and are looking to appoint a new Co-opted Advisor who can offer us support, guidance, challenge, and strategic advice through our education committee.
You will join us as we embark on new ventures to develop our site and offer, diversify our income streams, grow our volunteering and ultimately create our next 5-year strategy.
The co-opted advisor will have a one-year term.

We are looking for an advisor with experience preferably at senior leadership level in secondary education, however, we are open to people with experience in primary and further education.

The Kennedy Memorial Trust is seeking TWO new Trustees to join its Board from October 2024, one with university academic experience and one with operational management experience, to succeed Trustees who have reached the end of their terms of office.
The Kenned Memorial Trust funds exceptional UK students to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Set up as a ‘living memorial’ to President Kennedy following his assassination, the Trust has funded some 600 Kennedy Scholars since the first cohort departed in 1966. The strong trustee board is chaired by Sir Mark Walport.
The specific experience and skills we are seeking to recruit in these two roles are:
·Trustee 1: Current or recent experience as a an academic in a UK university, with insight into the landscape of postgraduate opportunities, outreach and selection, and good practice in supporting student welfare.
·Trustee 2: Experience and skills in operational management, covering issues such as IT, finance and HR systems, project oversight and risk management.
We are keen to strengthen the diversity of the Board and – reflecting the UK basis of the charity - hope to recruit at least one Trustee who lives or works in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. The Trust
The Kennedy Memorial Trust funds exceptional UK students to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Set up as a ‘living memorial’ to President Kennedy following his assassination, the Trust has funded some 600 Kennedy Scholars since the first cohort departed in 1966.
The Trust prides itself on the talent and service of the candidates it selects. Following their time at Harvard or MIT, scholars have gone on to play leading roles in the UK and across the world, in public service, the law, science/technology, health, education, business, charities, the arts and media. Alumni of the programme include Lady Mary Arden (Supreme Court Justice from 2018 to 2022), Lord Mervyn King (Bank of England Governor from 2003 to 2013). David Miliband (ex Foreign Secretary, now CEO of the International Rescue Committee), Dame Kate Bingham (Chair of the UK Government's Vaccine Taskforce), Zanny Minton Beddoes (Editor-in-Chief, The Economist), Sir Richard Moore (Chief of MI6) and Matt Clifford (CEO of Entrepreneur First and Chair of the UK's Advanced Research and Invention Agency).
Originally funded by public donation, the Trust has an endowment of around £16 million. It has developed a medium-scale fundraising programme over the last decade, and now intends to grow both its alumni activity and its fundraising, taking advantage of the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the first scholarships being awarded. An externally conducted feasibility study for the fundraising programme is underway at present.
The Trust is supported by a small administrative team. A new Director has just been appointed. The team is being strengthened to reflect plans for increased fundraising and alumni relations activity: a part-time executive assistant is in post, and a fundraising/alumni relations specialist will be recruited later in the spring.
The Trust is a registered charity overseen by a ten-person Trustee board chaired by Professor Sir Mark Walport. Many but not all of the Trustees are former Kennedy Scholars. The current recruitment is to replace Stephanie Flanders and Professor Fiona Macpherson, who will have served two five-year terms by Autumn 2024.
What Trustees do in the Kennedy Trust
As with any charity, Trustees are responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the charity. It is the role of Trustees to develop and update the charity’s strategy and oversee its work to deliver it. Trustees support and challenge the executive team to deliver on the charity's goals, oversee the charity’s finances, approve its policies, manage risks, and help to build its external networks.
In the Kennedy Trust, selection of scholars is a key annual activity: a number of Trustees are asked to be involved in the short-listing process, and Trustees also participate in two days of face-to-face interviews (currently in early January).
A recent Board Development Review has established a revised structure of sub-committees to handle detailed issues in a time-efficient way, and make more time for strategy within the Board itself. The new sub-committees are set out below.

Time commitment and specific contributions sought
The time commitment for Trustees is:
- Attendance at and preparation for three 2-3 hour board meetings a year, in spring, summer and autumn. In-person attendance is encouraged at all meetings, especially the summer meeting.
- Participation in two days of interviews in person in London in January.
- Participation in at least one of the board’s sub-committees (2-3 meetings, usually online).
- Ad hoc and occasional support to the Board and to the executive team on issues within the Trustee’s skillset.
- Where possible, attendance at trust events such as the annual summer reception, the annual lecture, and other ad hoc alumni gatherings.

- Enthusiasm and energy to support the purpose and future of the Kennedy Trust and the Kennedy scholarships
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, exercise good judgement and work well within a team
- Experience of governance in a profit or not-for-profit setting
- Commitment to stay up to date with good practice in charity governance and in candidate interviewing
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and to widening access for underrepresented groups in higher education

For the academic trustee we are looking for
·Current or recent experience as a an academic in a UK university
·Someone who would make a good contribution to the Academic, Scholarships, and Welfare sub-committee, whose major task will be to conduct and oversee the shortlisting process each Autumn
·A good understanding of how study options at Harvard and MIT fit with the wider landscape of postgraduate opportunities elsewhere
·Extensive experience of candidate selection and good practice in shortlisting, interview, and selection
·The ability to add value to the Trust’s ambitions to further widen diversity of the scholar pool
·Insight into, and experience of, handling welfare issues for postgraduates and supporting candidates to make a success of their award.
·No academic discipline is ruled in or out. However, when the current Chair reaches the end of his term we shall lose our only Trustee with a medical background. This is therefore a gap we hope to fill at some point in the next few rounds of recruitment.
For the operational trustee we are looking for:
·significant experience of operational issues gained, for example, as a COO, CEO, project or programme director, operations director, or in a start-up
·someone who would make a good contribution to the Finance, Operations and Audit Committee
·proven experience in business planning, risk management, and project planning and management
·someone who can assist the Trust in some of the operational projects that lie ahead, such as modernising its administration, data-systems, website and records, and overseeing a move to more flexible office accommodation
Terms of appointment
·Trustees are appointed for a five-year term of office, renewable for a further five years maximum.
·These are unpaid positions, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.

What We are Looking for in New Trustees
We are looking for trustees who will help us to continue to grow the charity’s impact and profile. Applicants should be driven by a desire to support an organisation at the forefront of providing exceptional equality, diversity and inclusion training and consultancy. We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board.
We are particularly looking for trustees who have some leadership experience or experience of leading in the charity sector. Terms of Appointment
Terms of Office
- Trustees are appointed for a term of up to three years and can be reappointed up to three times.
- This is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
Time Commitment
- Boarding meetings are quarterly. Trustees are expected to attend at least 75% of meetings, including the Annual General Meeting. Meetings are currently held in person at Suite 11, Davey House, 31a St Neots Road, St Neots, Cambridgeshire, PE19 7BA. Trustees may also be part of sub-groups which will meet independently of the main board meetings. These meetings will be a combination of online and face-to-face meetings.
- In addition, trustees are expected to devote on average two hours per week to the role. This may involve scrutinising board papers, providing advice on new initiatives, providing support with ad hoc requests, supporting staff recruitment, disciplinaries and complaints, representing EqualiTeach at meetings and conferences or any other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

Make a lasting impact on young people in two inner London communities
Our Vision: Through an exceptional Central Foundation education, every student learns, develops, and grows so they can reach their full potential.
Central Foundation Schools of London (CFSL) is a charitable foundation which supports two amazing voluntary aided Schools based in the East End of London – Central Foundation Boys’ School in Islington and the Girls’ School in Tower Hamlets. Between them the two schools support over 2,500 young people from highly diverse communities and backgrounds.
The Foundation has just completed a major building redevelopment project with the Boys' School and is about to start a programme to extend the Sixth Form facilities and provision at the Girls' School. Beyond that the Foundation has just embarked on its first 3-year strategy which aims to leverage our skills, funding and influence to collaborate with our schools to strengthen their education provision and outcomes.
The Foundation are seeking four new Board members to serve for an initial term of four years. We are particularly keen to appoint:
- Two new trustees with experience of leadership the secondary education sector and/or a strong understanding of education policy and the wider education context in which our schools are working.
- A further Board member with a strong background in finance who would also serve as a member of our Finance & Audit or Investment Committee, or possibly both.
- A new trustee with a keen interest in creating opportunities for young people potentially through experience in careers development, corporate partnerships, fundraising or income generation.
The Foundation Board meets in person quarterly and has an annual away day. As well as being members of the Board, trustees are asked to join one of the sub-committees or project groups - these meetings are usually hybrid with one in-person meeting each year.

About the role
The Bournemouth & Poole College’s activities are overseen by the Board of the Corporation. It is responsible for agreeing, supporting and scrutinising the delivery of the College’s strategy.
The College Board has 16 members and includes members from the commercial, public, voluntary and education sectors. The Board operates a committee structure model and operates strictly in accordance with the government’s laid down ‘Instrument and Articles of Government’.
The role of the Governor is fundamental to strong and effective governance and is, therefore, key to Bournemouth & Poole College’s continued success. The Governors will bring experience at a strategic or senior level with a real recognition of the difference that education makes to the lives of thousands of people each year.
The appointed Governors will provide expertise in their area and ensure the collaboration of Governors is effective and of the highest standards, working as a coherent unit in close partnership with the management team to achieve the College’s strategy and objectives.
Together, the Corporation Board will review the College mission, consider strategic developments, systematically monitor College and management performance, review and monitor the implementation of a range of College policies, and ensure compliance with statutory requirements at all times. The Corporation is charged with developing an environment that enables the College to fulfil its mission for the benefit of learners and the community.
This current campaign of recruitment is part of our succession planning strategy and would hope to engage people with the ambition and mindset to develop as Governors and look to the future opportunities of Chair or Vice Chair of the Board. As a sector, we have a comprehensive CPD package for new Governors and those wishing to develop for future roles within a Board. Our experienced Director of Governance, Marianne Barnard, is well-versed in supporting all of our Board to be the very best they can be.

We are currently looking to recruit new Governors with experience in any of the following areas:

- Business/commercial leadership

The Board Member role is voluntary, although reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed. Our Board Members undertake a rich range of activities as part of the governance team, both in meetings and committees, and engaging with students, college staff and external contacts; to gain rounded perspectives to inform their contribution. The Board holds three scheduled meetings a year, these meetings are normally held at our Poole Campus on a Thursday (16:00 – 19:00). In addition to Board Meetings, members are expected to join one Board Committee (meetings are online and held termly, normally on Tuesday mornings). Other activity includes: attendance at the annual Board Planning Day, an annual Board/SLT dinner and learning walks.

As a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) Trustee, you will be one of the legal directors of the company and will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction, governance, and overall success of our partnership. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the education and well-being of young people in the communities that we serve.
The Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (“ATLP”) is a growing multi-academy trust of 21 schools and one teaching school, based in Birmingham, Coventry, North Warwickshire and Staffordshire, with more than 10,000 students and over 1,000 members of staff. All academies are quite distinctive and separate schools, serving different communities and phases: but all either are, or have the capacity to become good and outstanding.
Key Trustee Responsibilities
Governance and Leadership:
- Act as a responsible and active member of the Trust Board, providing leadership and guidance to achieve its strategic objectives.
- Attend Trust Board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and other relevant meetings to contribute to decision-making processes.
- Oversee trust compliance with legal and regulatory requirements governing academies and trusts as a member of the trust’s legally accountable body.
- Undertaking mandatory training [1]as required and developing knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis to support effective delivery of the role.
Strategic Planning:
- Contribute to the development of the trust's strategic plan and policies, ensuring alignment with the trust's mission, vision, and values.
- Help set strategic objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive continuous improvement across the trust.
Financial Oversight:
- Provide financial oversight by reviewing and approving budgets, financial statements, and expenditure and contributing to long-term strategic planning.
- Monitor the financial health of the trust and ensure Executives demonstrate responsible financial management.
Educational Excellence:
- Support and challenge the executive leadership team to maintain and improve educational standards across the trust both in formal appraisal processes and throughout the year.
- Foster a culture of high expectations and accountability.
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Engage with a diverse range of stakeholders through various formal and informal channels, including parents, teachers, students, and the local community.
- Getting to know schools within the trust, including undertaking planned occasional visits during school hours.
- Act as an ambassador for the trust and promote positive relationships with external partners.
Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate risks to the trust's operations, reputation, and finances.
- Ensure robust safeguarding procedures are in place and adhered to.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A passion for improving outcomes for young people.
- Previous experience in governance, leadership, or strategic roles, preferably within the education sector.
- Strong understanding of the principles of corporate governance, finance, and risk management.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Due to the planned committee memberships across the three roles, recent or specific experience in any of the following areas will be held in high regard;
- Qualification or professional knowledge of accountancy or audit processes.
- Experience in financial forecasting and strategic planning.
- Educational Technology (Ed Tech) knowledge.
- Estates and sustainability knowledge.
- Practical experience of applying risk management and/or internal controls principles.
- Programme or project management experience.
- HR leadership (incl. appraisal processes) knowledge.
- Knowledge of Teaching School Hub operations
Time Commitment:
The role of a Trustee typically involves attending regular meetings and dedicating time to prepare for those meetings, as well as occasional additional commitments as needed. We expect the time commitment to be one day a month spread across various activities such as preparation of board meetings, reading board papers, ad hoc discussions and conversations with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year.
The schedule of planned meetings for 2023-24 is available and will be shared with shortlisted candidates during the interview process to ascertain capacity/availability to attend the scheduled meetings.
