About this opportunity  Use your commitment to the value of peer mentoring for prisoners and your ability to create and maintain a positive and supportive team ethos to promote and support the Shannon Trust Reading Plan.

To support our vision 'Every Prisoner a Reader',  we need to recruit an Area Coordinator for our volunteers who support our Reading Plan in prisons across our Dorset area.

Establishments covered in this area include HMPs / YOIs  Guys Marsh, Portland & The Verne.

The successful candidate will be located within easy reach of these prisons.

 Your responsibilities will include:


* Coordinating & supporting a team of volunteer representatives to raise awareness of the reading plan


* Promoting the value of peer-mentoring in prisons & Youth Offenders Institutions


* Supporting individual volunteers within the team to start-up and maintain the reading plan in their allocated establishment


* Supporting the Regional Manager in taking forward the work of Shannon Trust


Activities include supporting the induction of new volunteers & being a point of contact for them. Attending strategic meetings with prison service managers will also be required as will keeping up to date with developments within the Prison Service and Shannon Trust. Organising three team meetings a year, highlighting team success at a national level and feeding back to the Regional Manager are also key responsibilities.  


About Shannon Trust 

Shannon Trust teaches prisoners to read through the award-winning Shannon Trust Reading Plan which enables prisoners who can read to teach those who struggle to read. We recognise that prisoners who struggle to read are unable to take up employment or education and training opportunities thus making it highly likely that they will re-offend after release.

Frequency & Commitment

The time commitment will vary from month to month but would not be expected to be more than 20-30 hours per month. You will need to be available during weekdays to accompany representatives to establishments when the need arises and you will need transport to visit establishments.
