Job Description

Thousands of prisoners are unable to engage in the rehabilitation journey because of their inability to read. Shannon Trust wants to transform lives by inspiring prisoners who can read, to teach prisoners who cannot.

Prisoners teaching prisoners to read makes sense. But it’s made possible by Shannon Trust volunteers who work with prison staff to advise, support and grow the Shannon Trust Reading Plan in each prison.

Shannon Trust volunteers believe passionately that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to read; they see lives changed by Shannon Trust’s peer mentored approach which is simple and effective.

Prison Representatives nurture the growth of the Reading Plan in their designated prison. They offer advice, guidance and support to the prison staff member facilitating the Reading Plan and prisoners who mentor. The role is wide and varied. It includes attending monthly meetings with the facilitator and mentors to jointly review progress and make plans to extend the reach of the Reading Plan in your prison.

Prison Representatives will  be involved in training prisoner mentors, arranging award ceremonies, speaking with the Prison Governor, and maybe making a presentation to prison staff –full training and induction is provided and support is always available. There is some necessary post meeting admin to ensure Shannon Trust remains effective so internet access is needed.

It can take several months to complete Shannon Trust training and prison security clearance / training, and the success of the Reading Plan often depends on building and sustaining key relationships, which takes time. Shannon Trust is therefore looking for people who can make a long term commitment to volunteering (initially two years). The role requires daytime mid-week availability of around 10-12 hours per month and the flexibility for the timing of monthly prison visits to be determined by prison staff availability. Out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
