Job description

South London Gives is a new project at the Sickle Cell Society aimed at increasing the number of people of black African and black Caribbean heritage who donate blood. We are recruiting a number of London based volunteers to engage with potential blood donors and explain the importance of giving blood to support the health needs of people with sickle cell disease.

As a Community Advocate you will develop links with black African, black Caribbean and mixed heritage communities to: raise awareness of the need for more black donors; encourage people to donate blood, and break down some of the concerns and preconceptions that exist around giving blood.

Your role will entail:

Making contact with groups of people in one or more of our target boroughs (Greenwich, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.) Groups could be community or social groups, work places, faith groups, etc.

Providing accurate information about blood donation and why it is needed and,

Signing people up as blood donors in their area.

You will also be required to support occasional blood donation events designed to raise the profile of black blood donation.

You will need to have:

- Established links into black African, black Caribbean and mixed heritage communities (or be willing to make them)

- Comfortable initiating contact with organisations and groups

- Ability to complete accurate and clear records documenting achievements

- Ability to volunteer independently within established guidelines

- A friendly and approachable manner

- Fluency in a community language is helpful but not essential.
