Research Volunteer [Norfolk]

Information about the role

At Shelter Norfolk we’re building a coalition to secure long-term change. As a Research Volunteer, you’ll be a vital part of our work to achieve this. You’ll research important areas to help us learn more about the issues and the ways to fix them. Your research will contribute directly to our campaigning work to change housing in Norfolk. 

Location: Shelter Norfolk Hub, 50-52 Fishergate, Norwich

Suggested contribution: One day per week (can be flexible around your commitments)

Availability: Volunteering will take place at a time that suits you, within Monday-Friday, 9am – 5pm

Main activities may include:

· Supporting Shelter Norfolk’s project work by carrying out research and data collection.

· Using the internet to research relevant topics, for example, Landlord Licensing Schemes and Council Enforcement Schemes.

· Making Freedom of Information requests to Local Authorities.

· Gathering data on the experiences of people affected by homelessness and bad housing, for example via questionnaires or surveys.

· Compiling the data collected in an accessible format. 

· Providing updates of your findings to the relevant action groups at Shelter Norfolk

This role fights the housing emergency by identifying local issues, so we can make sure our campaigns are relevant to the changes that are needed in the local area.

Your skills and experience

We’re looking for someone who is interested in housing and homelessness and who has enthusiasm for improving the experience of renters in Norfolk. The volunteer in this role will need some basic IT skills, including using the internet and sending emails.

Supporting you

· You will be provided with an induction into your role, access to relevant learning and a copy of our volunteer handbook.

· The role, including learning and communications, are flexible, so can be tailored so they best suit your needs and preferences.

· You will be able to claim reasonable volunteering expenses in line with Shelter’s volunteer expenses policy. Where financial circumstances would be a barrier to volunteering, we may be able to offer these funds in advance.

· You will be able to access our volunteer support package, including our colleague assistance programme and Shelter’s network of mental health first aiders.

Task Management Team Overview

Task Management Officer (4 Positions)

Role Summary: Officers are the frontline reviewers and taggers, ensuring tasks are updated, compliant, and aligned with YAUK’s operational standards.

Reports to: Senior Task Management Officer

Type: Voluntary, flexible, part time, 5 to 10hrs per week

Key Responsibilities:

• Tag task assignees and request updates per standards

• Tag supervisors when compliance issues arise

• Conduct regular reviews of tasks across systems

• Flag tasks that violate GDPR or lack progress

• Collaborate with Senior Officers for guidance and escalation

Ideal Skills:

• Detail-oriented and proactive

• Basic understanding of GDPR

Task Management Team Overview

Senior Task Management Officer (2 Positions)

Role Summary: Senior Officers act as intermediaries between the Manager and Officers, ensuring consistent application of standards and supporting the review process.

Reports to: Task Management Manger 

Type: Voluntary, flexible, part time, 5 to 10hrs per week

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead task reviews across assigned YAUK departments

• Support Officers in tagging and compliance checks

• Liaise with supervisors to resolve tasking issues

• Assist in training new Officers on standards and systems

• Report progress and challenges to the Manager

Ideal Skills:

• Experience with digital tasking tools

• Strong organizational and mentoring abilities

• Knowledge of GDPR principles

• Ability to interpret and apply standards consistently

Task Management Team Overview

Task Management Manager (1 Position)

Role Summary: The Manager leads the Task Management Team, ensuring strategic oversight and operational excellence in task compliance and system hygiene across YAUK platforms.

Reports to: Head of IT & Systems

Type: Voluntary, flexible, part time, 5 to 10hrs per week

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee the implementation of pre-set tasking standards across all systems

• Coordinate with the Head of IT & Systems and C-Level to refine standards

• Supervise Senior Officers and Officers, providing guidance and support

• Monitor team performance and ensure timely reviews of all tasks

• Escalate non-compliance issues to relevant leadership

• Ensure GDPR protocols are upheld in all task-related activities

Ideal Skills:

• Strong leadership and communication

• Familiarity with task management platforms (e.g., CLICK UP)

• Understanding of GDPR and data governance

• Strategic thinking and attention to detail

About IRMO

IRMO works to enable the development, agency, and participation of Latin Americans and other Spanish and Portuguese speakers, by responding to both immediate needs and structural inequalities. We do this by offering high-quality information and advice services, opportunities for development and training, and a platform to seek social and systemic change. 

About the Children and Young People Area

Our programme offers a wide range of activities for migrant, asylum-seeking and refugee families, children and young people. These include English classes, mentoring, creative workshops and group trips. We help children and young people secure places in nurseries, schools, colleges and universities, boost educational attainment and make friends while learning, creating and discovering talents. For parents, we offer tailored advice, advocacy and workshops that connect families with essential services, including support for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and emergency assistance. 

About the Role 

The Latin American Youth Forum (LAYF) SPACE Workshop Assistant will be supporting our Youth Project Coordinator with contributing ideas for workshops and preparing sessions, promoting opportunities for young people in the workshops, creating/sharing useful resources and supporting with monitoring and evaluation. The ideal LAYF Workshop Assistant is someone who is fluent in Spanish & English or Portuguese & English; has some experience in working with children and young people and has an idea of the challenges faced by migrant, refugee & asylum seeking young people in the UK. 

Main tasks and responsibilities 

● Support the Youth Project Coordinator to plan and deliver the LAYF SPACE Workshops and facilitate sessions in Spanish/Portuguese. This would include session space set up, registration, welcoming young people, co-facilitation and assisting the Youth Project Coordinator with managing the group. 

● Support with the translation of existing and new resources or comms material from English to Spanish/Portuguese. 

● Support with monitoring the impact of activities and evaluating the young people's progress by giving out questionnaires, feedback forms and collecting information for case studies. 

● Adhere to IRMO’s Safeguarding procedures and report any safeguarding concerns.

We are looking for someone who is/has: 

● Fluent in English and Spanish (essential) and Portuguese (desirable). 

● Aware of the issues facing migrants, especially children and young people, in the UK. 

● A warm, friendly, patient and empathetic approach towards young people with complex needs. 

● Some experience or keen interest in youth work and facilitation with young people. 

● Good time management and organisational skills to be able to assist the delivery of the regular LAYF SPACE sessions. 

● Some knowledge of safeguarding and child protection in the UK.

 ● Non-judgemental, empathetic and committed to IRMO’s mission and values.

We’re looking for one Treasurer and one Bookkeeper, or one volunteer to fulfil both roles. You must be over  the age of 18, and able to travel to 4ward Stroke Leicester Stroke Group, Fosse Rider Pavilion, LE3 6DL.

You’ll be volunteering every third Thursday of the month, from 10.30am until 12.30pm

As a  support group treasurer and bookkeeper, you will take on specific roles and responsibilities in the managing and reporting of the group’s finances.  One volunteer can do both roles or two volunteers can work together, dividing responsibilities.  Access to your own computer or device is essential to do this role.

You will be supporting the branch to work with local schools, helping to educate children on the importance of animal welfare. Building relationships with external partners within the local community, you will help the branch to build its community outreach programme, to reach more members of the public. Joining the trustee committee, currently made up of 9 trustees with varying specialist areas, you will be supported by other trustees as we want to increase our skill set across our trustee board.

The role includes:

• Reaching out to local schools to offer education on the importance of animal welfare
• Building relationships with local schools to maximise fundraising opportunities
• Working within the local community to identify events & education activities that the branch can take part in

We are looking for an ED&I Specialist Trustee to join the branch committee to ensure best practice with regards to Equality, Diversity & inclusion by regularly reviewing the branches current processes and policies. You will be joining the branch committee helping to support the branch to further its aims of helping more local animals.

Your key activities will be implementing and regularly reviewing branch policies on Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, ensuring the branch uses best practice.

Shop Volunteering Opportunities

Kensington

Our shops are at the heart of local communities raising vital funds for our fight against homelessness and bad housing - and they’re powered by our volunteers!

Suggested Involvement: It’s up to you! We have volunteers who support for one hour a week and others who volunteer more. Many people volunteer for a morning or an afternoon each week, but we’ll have a chat about your availability after you’ve applied.

Availability: The shop is open Monday - Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 11:00-17:00

• Volunteering in the shop

Our retail volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

- You will not undergo a criminal record check for this role  

• Volunteering in the community

Our Van Driver’s mates are out and about supporting drivers with delivering and collecting stock throughout the local area. They play a key part in getting donations to and from shops. This role does require the ability to lift heavy items. 

• Volunteering in a leadership role

Our volunteer supervisors help with overseeing the running of our shop and creating a fantastic environment for our customers. You may be involved with coordinating and supporting other volunteers, operating computer systems, and being a key point of contact for the shop.

Skills and Experiences Required:

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need to have volunteered or worked in a shop before as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and willing to follow Shelter’s policies and can be an excellent ambassador for Shelter. We particularly welcome applications from people with lived experience of bad housing or homelessness.

As a Volunteer Services Lead, you would work with and support the Lead Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting and placing volunteers. You would help the Lead Volunteer Coordinator manage and motivate the team of volunteers and ensure that the required resources to the team.

As a minimum, trustees would normally be expected to attend a monthly committee meeting lasting some 2 to 3 hours. However, the commitment may vary depending on whether the trustee takes on additional duties.

Alongside the Lead Volunteer Services Coordinator:

• Develop and implement an effective and welcoming induction program for new volunteers to the branch.
• Keep an up-to-date list of volunteering opportunities within the branch.
• Working with the centre manager, supervisors, retail managers and Trustees to arrange the recruitment and placement of volunteers.

Do you have professional experience in coding and computing? Could you support young people in learning how to code? 

Are you passionate about equipping the next generation with the skills and strategies needed to succeed?

About us: GT Scholars is a social enterprise that tackles educational inequality by giving ambitious young people the support, skills and strategies they need to achieve their aspirations. 

We believe that all young people are gifted and talented, regardless of their background. We run a wide range of programmes that help young people achieve their academic and career aspirations, particularly those from less-privileged backgrounds.

What makes us different? There are many organisations that offer programmes to improve the life chances of young people. However, our programmes use a unique 3:1 model which means that we’re able to sustainably use our profits to provide additional places on our programmes, to young people from low-income homes. 

Our mission is to empower and develop the next generation of leaders and change-makers and we’re looking for workshop facilitators that are passionate about making a difference in young people’s lives!

Responsibilities: Facilitators are responsible for designing creative and interactive workshops for our young people, and delivering these workshops with our young people. We run some of our workshops online and other workshops are held in London. All workshops are held during the school holidays, in the evening and on weekends.

The workshop facilitator role is flexible and as part of your role, you may be involved in:

• Delivering and leading short workshops or courses, on behalf of GT Scholars (Online or offline)

• Designing engaging, interactive and educational workshops and short courses for young people and ensuring that the content is targeted to suit different abilities and capabilities

• Running your own bespoke workshops, eg. workshops in coding and technology

• Managing short activities and Q&A sessions during our workshops

• Working collaboratively with other event coordinators, volunteers, ambassadors, workshop facilitators and speakers at our events

• Following the agreed timings and content for workshops and courses

Person specification: 

As workshop facilitator, you will need to:

• Have passion, knowledge and experience in coding, computing and technology

• Have strong presentation skills

• Have strong communication skills

• Be personable and able to confidently communicate with people from a range of backgrounds and professions.

• Be passionate and committed to tackling educational inequality

• Be punctual and organised

Availability: Workshops will run during the day on school holiday dates, on Saturdays or in the evening (5pm-8pm).

Additional information: We will need to conduct reference checks and you will need an Enhanced DBS for this role as you will be working directly with children. We can process this for you or you may submit one if this is less than 2 years old.

Rate of pay: This is a self-employed role. You must be aged 18 or above. Facilitator sessions range from 2 to 6 hours. The rate of pay will vary based on the budget of the funder.
