Job Description

Do you want to help more state school students have inspirational, life-changing encounters? Our free charity programme helps high-profile speakers from every sector volunteer to pass their insights, experience and expertise on to students.

We are looking for an occasional volunteer to support our programme lead in contacting schools and basic administration to ensure they are able to take a part of our free programme.

About Speakers for Schools

Speakers for Schools provides young people in state secondary schools across the UK with access to talks from leading, eminent figures, free of charge. Through giving access to these eminent figures the aim is to help level the playing field across state schools through these unique insights and inspiration, in hope of broadening horizons, encouraging and empowering students of all backgrounds.

Since launching the charity has attracted a network of over 1,200 speakers donating their time and travel, and over 4,000 free talks have been organized with state schools and colleges across the UK. We are currently working hard to organise as many school talks as possible this academic year. In order to achieve this, we are looking to bring in an enthusiastic volunteer to help support the Engagement Team at peak times.

There are not currently set hours for days for this role, but during Spring we would likely require between 2-5 hours a week. We will try to be flexible for a volunteer with the right skills. 

This position will involve working closely with the Programme Manager to support them with tasks which will include:

  • Contacting relevant contacts at schools via phone and email regarding speaker opportunities and helping to secure a date for the event
  • Documenting conversations and updating databases accordingly
  • Tracking follow-up and chase emails to schools and speakers (spreadsheet and database)
  • Administrative and basic communications support

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Well organised, efficient and experienced in keeping records
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated and passionate about education and social mobility
  • Friendly with a professional phone manner, and able to comfortable liaise with professionals, teachers and offices 
  • Understanding of the need for confidentiality and an awareness of data protection issues
  • Competent and comfortable with basic IT; happy working online
  • Somewhat familiar with of how UK schools work

Helpful but not essential experience:

  • Ease of using many online systems or IT systems for inputting data 
  • Experience of using Salesforce/similar database
