Stockport, Greater Manchester
Unpaid role, expenses paid
Job description

Supportability is a sector leading charity, primarily operating in the Stockport area.  We provide high quality, person centred individual and group based services for Children, Young People and Adults with complex physical and / or learning disabilities.  We believe that people who have disabilities are equally valued and empowered to live full and rewarding lives and since our inception by a group of parents back in 1953, our vision has been to be able to make a service offer to people that is consistent, affordable and reliable

Due to the retirement of our current Chair, we are looking for a successor to oversee the continued development of our services, that our resources are used accordingly and the services offered meet the needs of the Charity’s benefactors.  The Chair will be accountable for ensuring that the work that we do is aligned to Charity governance and legislative requirements and that this is embedded across the organisation.

The role will require a strong leadership approach aligned to the governance of the organisation working with the board of  Trustees and  the Senior Leadership Team,  to discuss and influencing  key strategic decisions. The commitment required to undertake this important role includes:

  • Chairing a monthly meeting of the  Board of Trustees  (currently takes place in the evening)
  • Representation and where appropriate/required chairing working groups aligned to key strategic priorities
  • Monthly informal meetings with the boards vice chair, CEO and DCEO
  • Providing a supervisory support role to the CEO

Key focus areas for the Charity aligned to our Business Strategy are:

  • Further developing Governance in line with the Charity Commissions requirements
  • Evolving and sustaining our service delivery to ensure our provision continues to meet the needs and wishes of those we support.
  • Ongoing review of the financial stability of the Charity  in order to  reflect the pandemic we are currently operating within and its future impact, as well as the wider requirements of the organisation.
  • Developing and delivering our Estates Strategy to reflect our proposed relocation to new premises in the coming years that will house all back office functions as well as our day offer for adults with learning/physical disabilities.
  • Playing a significant role in leading us through our Covid recovery plans

What are we looking for?

  • Previous recent experience of being a member of a Trustee Board and having operated at a strategic level
  • Knowledge of social care, preferably within the disability sector.
  • Excellent chairing skills
  • Experience in change management would be beneficial.
  • Driven and focused in ensuring  that we are sustainable and can meet the needs of the people we support, their families and carers as well as the Sector overall within Stockport and surrounding areas.
  • Share our vision and ambition to take a leading role in our journey to be recognised as an outstanding Charity in the area.
  • Have relevant experience and Leadership qualities that will support the  broad skill set across our Trustee board and the  Senior Leadership Team to deliver the Charity’s business objectives.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to support a SME Charity and will allow you to see the impact of your own, and the Board’s actions. Our operations are focused on a smaller geographical area compared to some larger regional and national providers and therefore the impact of our Charity decisions are more visible.  You will contribute to making a difference to the lives of others by ensuring that we continue to be a sustainable key provider of services to people with complex disabilities in the Stockport area as well as being well received and regarded  for many more years to come.

If you wish to discuss the role in more detail prior to making an application, please contact Maggie Body, Office Manager who will organise for you to have an informal chat with the CEO and retiring Chair.
