Breck Foundation is at the forefront of efforts to safeguard children and young people online. Our organisation was founded in 2014 in response to the tragic loss of Breck Bednar, a 14-year-old boy who was groomed and murdered by someone he met online. Our work aims to prevent this from ever happening again. Our work saves lives.
We reach thousands of children and young people in schools and other community settings across the UK with Breck's story. Our talks and educational materials fill a gap in the current UK curriculum that otherwise leaves children vulnerable to online grooming and exploitation.

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Breck Foundation achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Breck Foundation has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the executive team to enable Breck Foundation to grow and thrive, and through this, achieve our mission.
Board members have a collective responsibility. This means that trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
Our Board meetings are held virtually and so you can be based in any part of the United Kingdom.
Duties
- Support and provide advice on Breck Foundation’s purpose, vision, goals, and activities.
- Approve operational strategies, policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
- Oversee Breck Foundation’s financial plans, budgets and monitor and evaluate progress.
- Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
- Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively.
- Review and approve the foundation’s financial statements.
- Provide support and challenge to the CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
- Keep abreast of changes in Breck Foundation’s operating environment.
- Contribute to regular reviews of the foundation’s own governance. Attend Board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
- Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Breck Foundation’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third-party interests.
- Contribute to the broader promotion of the foundation’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge, and contacts.
As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond Board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.

About CARAS:
Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS) is a charity that supports refugees and people seeking asylum who live in south London, helping them to play their full part in the community. We offer a range of individual and group support to improve the holistic wellbeing of people who have a background of forced migration, providing them with tools to build lives filled with value, meaning and purpose in the UK. Our activities for adults currently include: ESOL classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages), a creative writing workshop, drama group, yoga and gardening project.
About the CARAS ESOL Team:
COVID has posed unprecedented challenges to refugees and people seeking asylum in London. Many of those we meet have arrived alone in the UK and have been living in contingency accommodation for many months. Our ESOL team offer English language classes to adults at a wide range of levels. This provides vital skills, opportunities and social contact and is crucial for enabling people to attend college and access other services in the future.
About the Role:
CARAS is looking for volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistants to support our online Zoom classes on Tuesday mornings:
Entry 1 class: 10 to 11.30am
Entry 2 class: 11.30am to 1pm (plus a 15-minute debrief)
You are welcome to apply to volunteer in one or both classes. Please note that ESOL classes do not run during school holidays, and we follow Wandsworth Council term dates.
As a volunteer ESOL Teaching Assistant your role is flexible and varied. It will involve supporting the Adult ESOL Teacher in the delivery of online Zoom classes, as well as providing learners with one-to-one or small-group support.
Volunteer tasks and responsibilities:
Providing learners with one-to-one or small group support within ESOL classes;
Helping learners build confidence in digital literacy;
Attending and contributing to volunteer debriefs after each session;
Helping create “learner portraits” to understand their strengths and areas of interest;
Making use of any community languages you may know to help students during the class;
Working collaboratively as a team and helping to shape the project;
Supporting people to develop their knowledge and skills, encouraging and inspiring participants to reach their full potential;
Assisting participants to recognise and celebrate their achievements;
Following CARAS’ confidentiality, safeguarding, health & safety, equal opportunities, data management, online communications and all other policies as relevant.
Requirements:
Essential:
To be 18 years or older;
An interest in education and English language teaching;
To be non-judgemental and able to engage with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;
To be reliable and punctual;
Excellent communication skills, especially with people with varying levels of English;
The ability to volunteer on Tuesday mornings during Wandsworth term time for a minimum of three months;
Currently resident in the UK;
Able to provide five years’ worth of addresses, and willing to undergo a DBS check;
Able to attend compulsory volunteer induction training (online) general and safeguarding prior to start of role
Desirable:
Knowledge of community languages, such as (including Arabic, Tigrinya, Amharic, Pashto, Dari, Farsi, Kurdish, Somali and Spanish).

We provide programmes to help stimulate learning in addition to having a social aspect that offers respite to isolation these young people face due to their unfortunate circumstances.
We are urgently looking for a warm and energetic volunteer Geography tutor with academic qualifications (GCSE and above) to provide educational support and a fun, safe space for these young people. Tutoring experience is not essential as full training is given. Our sessions also are all currently online.
We need someone who is able to engage with young people in a positive and friendly way, helping them overcome their experiences and not feel defined by their illness. You would engage with a young person on a one-to-one basis to help catch up on their studies, increase their confidence in their own skills, and have some fun with them in order to help them progress.
The young people we work with have missed so many experiences in school which we take for granted. The time you can offer to help fill in those missed periods is invaluable to their development. Your sessions will be fully supported by Bright Futures UK staff – from questions or queries, resources or materials or just to bounce an idea off the team, we’re here to help.
Volunteering with Bright Futures UK is something that can easily fit into your working day or a busy schedule with commitment starting from as little as 1 hour per week. We are so grateful for any support you might be able to provide, as are our young people.

Make a difference – become an Academy Governor
You don’t have to be a parent or member of staff to be an academy governor – applications are appreciated from all with an interest in the local community. Academy governors come from all walks of life and specialist knowledge is not always needed. What IS essential is a desire to get involved in children’s education and make a difference to their lives.
We welcome applications from those with educational, health & safety and safeguarding experience, but academy governors are all volunteers and training and support is provided. The University of Chichester (Multi) Academy Trust partners new governors with a ‘buddy’ – a trusted and more experienced colleague on the governing body – who initially acts as their mentor. It was established in 1813 and produced porcelain that has achieved international fame before producing earthenware for daily use until 1920. The site was rescued from total decay in 1990 but many of the Scheduled historic structures remain in urgent need of care. Today the China Works is a museum displaying the history of the porcelain and pottery produced at the site, a working pottery where three ceramicists are based (one of whom produces porcelain items from the rediscovered recipe of 1813), and a major teaching institution running some 500 workshop sessions in heritage crafts. The site is a popular venue for local groups and societies as well as an increasing number of coach tours.
Since 2007 the Museum has been operated by a charitable trust which determines the strategic directions for its development. It is staffed by volunteers who carry out a wide range of duties under the oversight of our Strategic Development Manager. After considerable growth over the past decade, we are now focussed on the steps necessary for expansion and sustainability. We are currently seeking to achieve Accredited Museum status and in line with our vision and the conclusions of a recent Options Appraisal exercise are working on developing a multi-million-pound application to ‘transform where the world’s finest porcelain was made into a vibrant centre for ceramic history and contemporary innovation.’
At this exciting time in our history, we would welcome applications to join the existing seven members of the Trustee board. Trustees are unpaid and meet formally six times a year but are expected to develop a close relationship with the site and help in any way they can. Working together, Trustees are expected to:
- Set the strategic framework and direction to enable the Museum to deliver benefits to the public, to achieve its goals and to flourish
- Ensure that the charity is carrying out its purposes for the benefit of the public
- Comply with our governing document and the law
- Act in the charity’s best interests
- Manage the charity’s resources responsibly
- Act with reasonable care and skill and ensure the charity is accountable
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics for museums
We would be particularly interested in hearing from applicants who can contribute in the areas of:
- Education, learning and public engagement, particularly in the context of the new Welsh Curriculum
- Historic buildings management and building conservation
- Emerging technologies for interpretation and presentation

Mae Crochendy Nantgarw yn gartref i’r porslen gorau a gynhyrchwyd erioed. Fe’i sefydlwyd ym 1813 a chynhyrchodd borslen sydd wedi ennill bri rhyngwladol cyn cynhyrchu llestri pridd at ddefnydd bob dydd tan 1920. Achubwyd y safle rhag dadfeiliad llwyr ym 1990, ond mae llawer o’r strwythurau hanesyddol Rhestredig yn parhau i fod angen gofal brys. Heddiw, mae’r Crochendy yn amgueddfa sy’n arddangos hanes y porslen a’r crochenwaith a gynhyrchwyd ar y safle. Mae hefyd yn grochendy gweithredol lle mae tri seramegydd wedi’u lleoli (y mae un ohonyn nhw’n cynhyrchu eitemau porslen o hen rysáit 1813 a ail-ddarganfuwyd), a sefydliad addysgu mawr sy’n rhedeg 500 o sesiynau gweithdy mewn crefftau treftadaeth. Mae’r safle yn lleoliad poblogaidd ar gyfer grwpiau a chymdeithasau lleol yn ogystal â nifer cynyddol o deithiau bws.

Ar ôl twf sylweddol dros y degawd diwethaf, rydym bellach yn canolbwyntio ar y camau angenrheidiol ar gyfer ehangu a chynaliadwyedd. Ar hyn o bryd, rydym yn ceisio ennill statws Amgueddfa Achrededig ac, yn unol â’n gweledigaeth a chasgliadau yr ymarferiad Arfarnu Opsiynau diweddar, rydym yn gweithio ar ddatblygu cais gwerth miliynau o bunnoedd i ‘drawsnewid y safle, lle y gwnaed porslen gorau’r byd, mewn i ganolfan fywiog i’r cyhoedd sy’n canolbwyntio ar hanes cerameg ac arloesi cyfoes.’
Ar yr adeg gyffrous hon yn ein hanes, byddem yn croesawu ceisiadau i ymuno â saith aelod presennol bwrdd yr Ymddiriedolwyr. Mae’r Ymddiriedolwyr yn ddi-dâl ac yn cyfarfod yn ffurfiol chwe gwaith y flwyddyn ond disgwylir iddyn nhw feithrin perthynas agos â’r safle a helpu mewn unrhyw ffordd y gallan nhw. - Pennu’r fframwaith a’r cyfeiriad strategol i alluogi’r Amgueddfa i sicrhau buddion i’r cyhoedd, i gyflawni ei nodau ac i ffynnu
- Sicrhau bod yr elusen yn cyflawni ei dibenion er budd y cyhoedd
- Cydymffurfio â’n dogfen lywodraethol a’r gyfraith
- Gweithredu er lles gorau’r elusen
- Rheoli adnoddau’r elusen yn gyfrifol
- Gweithredu gyda gofal a sgìl rhesymol a sicrhau bod yr elusen yn atebol
- Cadw at y Cod Moeseg ar gyfer amgueddfeydd
