Background
The Breteau Foundation (BF) aims to enable disadvantaged children to reach their full potential through the delivery of digital educational tools. The Foundation is operational in 103 schools worldwide. The Volunteer IT Programmer specialising in apps will be responsible for improving our digital technology programme and developing innovations for our school tablets and apps.
Key Responsibilities
This role will work closely with our Partnership & Latin America Manager (PLAM) to identify opportunities and act as our IT advisor in the decision making process for hardware procurement and software development. This will be a research focused role that will involve desk research, connecting with relevant tech companies and manufacturers and testing/designing edtech apps. The responsibilities will include:

Identifying cost-efficient opportunities for hardware (Android computer tablets) procurement and presenting to the PLAM

Participating in the planning, selection and testing stages of the manufacturing process of the new Android BF tablet.

Meet with the PLAM to understand the required performance of the new Android tablets to be manufactured.

Researching and recommending minimum & recommended specifications for the development of the new Breteau Foundation Android tablet.

Analysing hardware specs offers provided by manufacturers, as well as supporting the PPM during the ordering process.

Testing the new BF manufactured Android tablet based on the spec agreed with the manufacturer and the expected performance information provided by the PLAM.

Supporting the PLAM with technical knowledge during the planning and the development of educational Apps.

Providing occasional remote support to regional IT companies to remove roadblocks during tablet set up processes.

Suggesting innovative and cost effective ideas to improve existing tablets set up process or hardware.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
The right candidate will need to be able to demonstrate their experience and skills relating to the responsibilities above. They will also be required to meet the relevant qualifications, skills and experience following:

Knowledge of tablet hardware systems, preferably Android systems

Demonstrated experience in UX design

Demonstrated experience developing apps, preferably specialising in education and in at least one of these areas: mobile development, backend development or DevOps specialist

Experience working in a cross-cultural environment

Experience working in the NGO sector, preferably within education
All volunteers are required to volunteer at the Foundation for a minimum of 3 months and complete a criminal record check. For this position, we are looking for either a remote volunteer or a volunteer who has residency in the UK and who can commit to at least 1 day week.
