Job Description

The MS Society have recently created a new and exciting project based across either Bolton, Salford, or Manchester. Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, and in partnership with Citizens Advice Manchester, this project aims to support people with MS to improve their emotional wellbeing and financial security.

What does the role involve?

As a volunteer for the Improving Quality of Life Project, you will support people with MS who:

  • Are stressed, isolated and in need of emotional support, advice and guidance
  • Require benefits advice for financial support
  • Require housing benefits or grants from the MS Society to increase their mobility independence
  • Require support to return to work

It will be your role to signpost individuals to appropriate advice and support them in the process.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience with a large charity, develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

How much time might it take?

We know that you do have other commitments and we aim to be as flexible as possible.

Since this role will be about building relationships and supporting people who are living with MS, it may involve a reasonable time commitment. It will also depend on the number of people you choose to support and the type of support they require.

Required skills, experience and abilities

Ideally, you will;

  • Be somebody who enjoys working with others and helping them to achieve their goals
  • Have the ability to listen and support people
  • Have flexibility, commitment and a positive outlook
  • Have a good working knowledge of email, internet and databases.

Guidance, Support and Development

Once you have applied to join us, we will:

  • Provide you with a free of charge Disclosure and Barring Check
  • Offer you a full induction into the MS Society and Improving Quality of Life Project
  • Offer ongoing training, advice and support
  • Provide you with an Induction checklist (listing the resources available to support you in your role)

As part of your role, you will be required to attend regular support meetings, and training of the following:

  • Safeguarding
  • Grant Giving
  • Disability, Equality and Inclusion
  • Citizens Advice Manchester training
  • Data protection / General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
