Job description

Our empathetic and impartial Support Volunteers use their excellent listening and interpersonal skills to provide support to people with MS, their family, friends and carers.

We’re the MS Society – a community of people living with MS, scientists, campaigners, listeners, organisers, ambassadors and fundraisers. Our volunteers are a key part of achieving our goals and their support is vital. Join us.

About this opportunity
We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Spelthorne (Staines and district) Group. As a Support Volunteer, you will be providing support to people with MS, their family, friends and carers.

We are seeking to develop a team of new Support Volunteers to provide information and signposting to other services in the Spelthorne area. Alternatively, you could handle calls and emails seeking information and signpost to local agencies, etc. And/or focus on our grants provision.

We are flexible depending on your skills, experience and time commitment and you can do whatever you feel most comfortable doing within the role description. Full training is provided as well as well-being sessions to support you in your role and forums to meet other support volunteers in your area.

We do not have a fixed base so meetings are held in various community venues within the Spelthorne area. Much of the role would be carried out in your own home (admin) or home visits or meeting within community venues. We are flexible to suit your availability but on average, we estimate it would need around two hours per week of your time.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you
You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll have empathetic listening and interpersonal skills.
