About this opportunity
We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the East London Group. As a Support Volunteer, you will be providing support to people with MS, their family, friends and carers. You would be helping to empower people affected by MS by giving information about MS, providing emotional support by phone, email or in person and signposting people to services and support in the local area.
You could also help build partnerships locally with health and social care professionals or other relevant organisations and provide support and guidance to individuals applying to our grants programme, for example for essential home adaptations.
You will be volunteering at home as well as out in the local East London community and will ideally be able to meet up with the volunteer Coordinating Team every month. We cover the areas of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Barking or Dagenham.
We are flexible about the hours and days you volunteer because we understand that you have other commitments but the anticipated time for this role is expected to be approximately 5-10 hours per month. There will be initial training for this role which will take one day and telephone based peer support sessions are available for all Support Volunteers.
You will receive a welcome pack and volunteer induction, as well as regular support from the rest of the volunteer team and a local member of staff. All volunteers are given regular opportunities to attend volunteer forums to meet with other volunteers, share learning and experiences and receive national updates. We pay all reasonable out of pocket expenses that you may incur whilst volunteering with us.
This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.
You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll have empathetic listening and interpersonal skills.
Ideally we'd welcome someone who is confident using the internet and email.
You need to live in the areas of Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Barking or Dagenham to carry out this role or be willing to travel to the area.
