Gillingham, Medway
Voluntary
Job description

Our empathetic and impartial Support Volunteers use their excellent listening and interpersonal skills to provide support to people with MS, their family, friends and carers.

We’re the MS Society – a community of people living with MS, scientists, campaigners, listeners, organisers, ambassadors and fundraisers. Our volunteers are a key part of achieving our goals and their support is vital. Join us.

About this opportunity
We are looking to recruit a Support Volunteer for the Medway Group. As a Support Volunteer, you will be providing support to people with MS, their family, friends and carers.

We are a group of 14 active volunteers who offer services and support to people living with MS in the Medway and surrounding area. We would like to expand our support volunteering team who assist in signposting people to local services and attend an information stand at the Medway Maritine Hospital once a month when the MS Specialist Nurses hold their clinics. We are trained on how to respond to people and signpost them where they can get help and support as we do not offer befriending or personal assistance.

The group offers a weekly drop-in where people affected by MS can meet and socialise. We also hold events and organise trips to help people have social activities. We would welcome anyone who is interested in helping us enhance the lives of those affected by MS in the Medway and surrounding area.

The training currently takes one day and further online opportunities may be available in the future. You can choose how many hours you offer to volunteer. There is flexibility with sharing with other volunteers to attend the Thursday drop-in (10.00 - 15.00) or the Monthly Monday morning hospital stand at the Medway Maritine Hospital. We estimate the time needed for this role to be about 4 hours but this can be varied to suit you.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience within a large charity and develop your existing skills and learn new ones. We need you to get involved and help make positive changes to the lives of people affected by MS.

About you
You’ll have an interest in the MS Society and the work that we do, as well as the enthusiasm to represent both us and our values locally. You will understand the needs of people affected by MS in your area and be sympathetic to the needs and motivations of volunteers. You’ll have empathetic listening and interpersonal skills.

You’ll be comfortable talking to people and approachable if attending the hospital clinic but all information booklets are on the stand for people to pick as and when they feel the time is right for them.

You’ll need to live in the Medway area to carry out this role.
