Job description

As Treasurer of The Silverlining Charity, you will be part of the team working to realise our ambitions by using your skills and experience to develop and drive forward our business plan. In the role of Treasurer you will; provide us with ongoing financial guidance; ensure we comply with the requirements of The Charity Commission and HMRC; and institute processes and procedures to ensure we operate accountably and grow sustainably. Donating a couple of hours of your time each week and attending one board meeting per quarter will help us improve the lives of hundreds of brain injury survivors across the country.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Compliance:

  • Ensure the committee fulfils its financial responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with Charity Commission and HMRC requirements
  • Support the committee in reviewing, drafting and approving our financial policies and procedures
  • Communicate financial policies with stakeholders, answer relevant enquiries and secure buy in

 

Reporting:

  • Communicate with committee members and other relevant persons in order to maintain a clear picture of the health of The Silverlining Charity
  • Prepare a written quarterly report regarding the financial health of the Charity for the committee
  • Provide an annual financial report to members at our Annual General Meeting
  • Prepare our annual accounts in partnership with our book keeper and the committee
  • Present our annual accounts and the relevant financial records for audit
  • Contribute to the preparation of the Trustees Annual Report
  • Ensure financial reports are accurate, timely, comprehensible, understood and properly discussed

 

Planning and Operations

  • Attend quarterly board meetings
  • Ensure the committee develops an appropriate long-term financial strategy with measurable objectives
  • Support the committee in preparing appropriate quarterly and annual budgets
  • Monitor progress in budget implementation
  • Review available systems for budgeting, planning, and reporting
  • Implement best practice in budgeting, planning and reporting
  • Oversee the appointment of auditors or independent examiners

 

Book Keeping:

  • Oversee the work of our part-time book keeper
  • Support with the processing of HMRC Gift Aid claims

Required Skills and Qualities:

  • An understanding of and/or interest in the charity sector
  • A knowledge of financial accounting and reporting procedures
  • Ability to communicate financial information to those with little financial background
  • Experience working to and upholding policies and procedures
  • Strategic financial planning skills
  • Experience using Xero or similar accounting software is desirable, but not necessary
  • Fundraising experience is desirable, but not necessary
