Job description

We’re looking to increase our Trustee Board and we're particularly interested in encouraging diverse representation for survivors.  Previous experience as a Trustee isn't necessary as we will provide a comprehensive induction and Trustee training for successful candidates.  The Survivors Trust (TST) strives to be an inclusive organisation and is keen to encourage applications from people from diverse backgrounds.  

TST is a national membership organisation for over 120 specialist voluntary sector rape and sexual abuse support services in the UK and Ireland providing specialist counselling, support and advocacy services for anyone affected by sexual violence of any kind at any time.  We’re offering an opportunity to contribute to and support rewarding national work promoting our Member Agencies, victims and survivors’ rights and interests.    You would be joining an enthusiastic Trustee Board with five other Trustees. 

Your responsibilities as a Trustee:

  • To take part in formulating and regularly reviewing the vision, values and long-term strategic aims of The Survivors Trust
  • With other Trustees to ensure that the policy and practices of The Survivors Trust are in keeping with its aims
  • To ensure the needs and interests of member organisations and other relevant agencies and organisations are taken into account when making decisions
  • With other Trustees (and/or with the assistance of appropriate professional advisers) to ensure that The Survivors Trust functions within the legal and financial requirements of a charitable organisation and complies with any regulatory and statutory requirements
  • To ensure that the work of The Survivors Trust is carried out to appropriate quality standards
  • To work collectively and to make all decisions together with the other members of the National Executive Committee and to take joint responsibility for them

Time Commitment:

The time commitment required is generally:

  • Attend monthly Trustee Board meetings, usually held online and occasionally meeting in person in Rugby.
  • Attend any (rare) emergency meetings of the Trustee Board.
  • Read and respond to Executive Committee email communications between meetings.  This commitment averages about 1 to 2 hours per week but can be unpredictable as The Survivors Trust often needs to make decisions and undertake tasks to fit in with external agencies’ timescales.
  • Take on some tasks or act as representative of The Survivors Trust at some external events and meetings.


TST registered as a charity in 2003 and converted to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in 2016.  Our charitable objects are:

  1. To promote the efficiency and effectiveness of charities and other non- charitable organisations undertaking charitable activities as the charity trustees see fit from time to time in particular but not exclusively those that work with and provide services to female and male victims/survivors of rape, sexual abuse (including but not limited to childhood sexual abuse) or any other form of sexual violence; and
  2. To campaign for and seek to secure better and improved rights and services for victims/survivors of rape, sexual abuse (including but not limited to childhood sexual abuse) or any other form of sexual violence

Our vision:

Our vision is for a society where services for survivors are trauma-informed and accessible according to need.  Survivors and their partners, parents, families and supporters have a right to support and justice can access the right service for them at the right time, free of charge, and according to need.

Current work:

TST has 14 paid staff and a small team of helpline sessional workers and volunteers.  We undertake a wide range of activities in order to pursue our charitable aims.


Recent achievements:

  • Provided training for counsellors and support workers from Member Agencies to support working online during the Pandemic.
  • Developed UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accredited service standards for working safely and effectively online with template policies, guidance and psychoeducational resources.
  • Held 50 regional Members Meetings, including 8 meetings for our London Members.
  • Developed a London Members website detailing support available in London for survivors and professionals.
  • Held 70 specialist forums to support operational practice and governance for Member Agencies, including forums for Trustees, Chief Executives, Clinical Leads and agencies working with children and young people.
  • Developed a training and resource campaign (supported by NHS England London) to support trauma-informed care and improve access to healthcare for survivors, #CheckWithMeFirst.
