Trustees Volunteer Roles
Chair-designate for the Autism Group (TAG)
Do you have leadership skills and some experience of running or Chairing a committee?
Would you like to join the Board of a highly-valued and well-respected charity in Maidenhead, that works with children and young people from 9 to 25 on the autism spectrum?
About us
The Autism Group is committed to supporting and enhancing the lives of young people on the spectrum, their parents and carers. We provide special interest clubs, workshops and parent support services, some of these managing to continue during the pandemic via Zoom and in virtual environments. As well as such support, we offer a variety of training to care workers, social workers, teaching assistants and similar roles, in all sectors.
Our Board of four trustees has been well-served by our Chair, who has been a trustee since our inception, as well as Chair since 2017, and is now stepping down. Other trustees have extensive experience, which will support our new Chair-designate.
Our turnover in 2019/20 increased to £71.5k, despite having to rapidly then change our face-to-face delivery.
The role
We are looking for a new trustee to eventually take on the role of Chair, to lead the Board and the charity alongside our existing trustees, assisted by our Charity Manager and other employees. Our expectation is for you to spend three to six months in this ‘designate’ role, to enable you to ascertain if it’s right for you and right for our organisation, to learn how we operate and how you can lead us.
If you have skills and abilities in cooperatively chairing a committee, maybe experience of charity (or corporate) governance, we’d welcome you, although similar experience and transferable skills are as important; we’ll give you support and training as necessary.
This opportunity will become a chance to work with staff and trustees to continue to grow TAG for the future, beyond the pandemic limitations. You don’t need experience of working with children and young people on the autism spectrum, but you must have empathy and a willingness to do so.
We also want to expand the diversity of our Board, in all aspects.
We are a charity not a business, but we want you to help us apply good business principles in governing our organisation. We welcome potential trustees with ideas and expertise from a variety of backgrounds.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic and you don’t need to be directly involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis, although we ask that you are occasionally available to visit our clubs when that becomes possible again. The Chair will take on the support & supervision of the Charity Manager in regular meetings.
We ask for about ten hours per month as Chair-designate, rising to approx. fifteen hours per month upon appointment as Chair: this includes induction & training, all meetings, correspondence, communication, etc. This is a voluntary role and reasonable travel expenses may be claimed.
Full induction to our charity is provided, plus specialist support as a trustee including access to external training. You do not necessarily need prior experience of charity trusteeship, as support from other trustees and from our Charity Manager is always available.
What do you get as a volunteer trustee with our organisation?
Some of these you will gain as Chair-designate, some as eventual Chair:
- An opportunity to exercise and grow your cooperative leadership skills, possibly in a different environment or context
- A chance to augment your experience of charities
- A chance to implement strategic change for the organisation
- An opportunity to work alongside other committed trustees
- The personal reward of giving back to the community
- High-quality induction training from us and other charity-support organisations
What do we get?
- Your skills, knowledge and leadership experience
- Your abilities to help our Board and charity grow in line with our strategic plans
- Enhancement to our overall governance and the Board of Trustees; improvement in our charity governance and operational growth
- Your participation in our collective decision-making, contributing to all areas of our charity work
- Your enthusiasm
What do our beneficiaries get?
- The ability to continue our support for children and young people on the autism spectrum, as well as provide information and support for parents, carers and professionals
- A well-governed charity, sustainable for the future
- A forward-looking and agile organisation, with a well-informed and well-managed Board of trustees
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, a charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Person Specification can be made available to you upon request.
You will need to be eligible to be a charity trustee, which we will explain. Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references, to completion of an online Safeguarding course and an Enhanced DBS check
Your CV or similar will be read by TAG’s trustees and Charity Manager and an interview by video offered as soon as mutually convenient.

Progress towards equality for autistic children and young people has been made and we’re proud of our role in this as a movement for change. But there is still more progress to be made. This is an opportunity to lead the board of a charity that is ensuring we live in a world where autistic children and young people can be themselves and realise their ambitions.
Location: London across several sites.
Applications close on Friday 31st May.
Who we are.
Ambitious about Autism is the national charity for autistic children and young people. We were established in 1997 by a group of families of autistic children who were concerned about the lack of appropriate provision for their children. Following a major capital fundraising campaign and a series of temporary locations and premises, Treehouse School and our charity moved into purpose-built accommodation in 2008, together creating the Pears National Centre for Autism Education. Since then, we have grown our education services opening Ambitious College, The Rise School and Spring School, and merging with St John’s College in September 2023, alongside extending our national influencing and enabling activities.
We run specialist education services and an award-winning employment programme, wherein children and young people are at the heart of our charity’s decision-making, policy work and campaigning. We also use our expertise to deliver training and consultancy to a wide range of organisations to improve awareness and understanding of autism. We want to help even more autistic children and young people to improve their quality of life and secure a fulfilling and rewarding future.
Even during the pandemic, we lived up to our name as we achieved so many goals and plans. We developed our Right from the Start toolkit, launched our Employ Autism campaign, and have grown and evolved.
We are experiencing an exciting period of growth. We were chosen to open a new school – Spring School which supports up to 90 pupils at capacity from ages 4-19 and we announced our merger with St John’s College. Although this is exciting, we have a battle on our hands as we call on the government to follow their solutions in the SEND Green Paper. We’re concerned that some of the proposals will make it even harder for autistic children to access education support and so we are asking for a public commitment from the government to fund support for children with SEND. There are more than twice as many children with SEND in schools and colleges now than there were in 2010, but the government has not set out what funding will be available to pay for the additional support they need.
We know there is an increasing need for mental health support across all schools. Everyone should be able to feel OK at school. But we know this isn’t the case for many autistic pupils. That’s why we created the Autistic and OK programme to empower autistic pupils to take control of their mental health and wellbeing, understand themselves and feel OK at school. Our guide is free for every single secondary school. But there is more for us to do, to continue to build and empower our communities to ensure autistic young people feel understood and accepted.
We recognise that there is still more to be done to grow and develop our important work, first outlined in our Time for Ambition 2021-2024 strategy and so we are extending this strategy for a further two years. Our aims continue to include ensuring autistic children and young people have an excellent and inclusive education, alongside striving for every autistic young person to have good careers education at school and in further and higher education, including experience of work. Autistic people need services that support good mental health by reducing isolation and so we want to ensure early intervention through signposting to specialist support. We aim to ensure peer networks are available alongside uplifting but realistic information tailored to autistic young people and their families. We also want to further develop our Ambitious Youth Network and continue to expand nationally to empower young people to connect with one another and to influence societal change.
Given we run schools, following a governance review in December 2019, we created our own Multi-Academy Trust – Ambitious about Autism Schools Trust (AaAST) which currently has two schools. We implemented several new changes to our governance including Joint Trustees and a joint committee structure wherein there are five trustees each of the Charity and Trust Boards and three Trustees who are Trustees of both Boards who serve as the joint Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer of the Charity and Trust. All Trustees of the Charity and Trust are members of a Joint Group Board Committee to ensure oversight of the Charity and Trust. How this works in practice is everyone meets together with a short meeting afterwards to discuss Ambitious about Autism Schools Trust.
Our new Chair.
Our current Chair, Neil Goulden, is approaching the end of his term in December 2024, and we are in search of our next Chair to lead our Board. We need a Chair who has extensive experience in modern board leadership, ensuring robust governance, and promoting collective strategic decision-making. We are looking for someone who is commercially astute, as we strive to drive our organisation’s continued growth, ambition, and development. We value a Chair who embodies credibility and adeptness in navigating complexity. The ability to work with others and build trusting relationships with a variety of stakeholders are key.
Our new Chair must be committed to making a meaningful impact and leading an organisation that empowers young autistic people during a pivotal period of change in our communities. We need a Chair who is an inclusive leader, fostering engagement, strategic thinking, and openness who will lead the board as an
exemplar of inclusivity. They must be supportive and challenging, creating opportunities for growth and positive impact.
It is vital that our new Chair works with the board to ensure that all voices are heard and will have an affinity for our mission to stand with autistic children and young people, champion their rights, and create opportunities.
The new Chair will work with an established board and ambitious executive team that is ensuring our organisation is sustainable, evolving, innovative and impactful, and leads change whilst providing outstanding education to young autistic people.
The Board meets once a term and has an annual strategy away day. We expect the time commitment for the Chair to vary, and we would expect the equivalent on average of circa two days a month across various activities such as preparation for board meetings, reading board papers, regular conversation with the Chief Executive, ad hoc discussions with board members and the executive team, and attending events throughout the year.
Our board is diverse in many ways, including autistic people, who are part of our board, alongside a balance of gender, ethnicity, and age. We want to continue ensuring our Board represents our society and the people we work with every day.

Background
Thyroid UK is a charitable company working primarily within the United Kingdom. Formed in 1998, we became a company limited by guarantee in 2007 and in 2008 we became a registered charity.
The provision of quality information for people with both diagnosed and undiagnosed thyroid disorders is the primary concern of Thyroid UK, and we work effectively in this field through dialogue with NHS departments, networking with other voluntary organisations, and providing services directly to patients.
We are a small charity, with just three permanent employees, plus contract staff, but we have a wide influence, and provide a great deal of support to our beneficiaries, within the UK and abroad. The charity’s annual income in 2023 was £96,900.54 with the majority of that income being spent on both running the charity and conducting campaigns and activities to support our beneficiaries.
The Thyroid UK Board of Trustees is a diverse group of 7 individuals, including the CEO, a Chairperson, Deputy Chair and this Treasurer role.
Role
We are looking to fill the position of treasurer for our Board of Trustees. Working with the CEO and Finance Manager, this role monitors the financial administration of the charity and reports to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health, in line with best practice and in compliance with the governing document and legal requirements, to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make operational and strategic decisions.
The ideal candidate will have experience of finance or finance management, preferably including some experience in a small company or charity.
Time requirement
The role will require a time commitment of an average of 1 to 2 days per month, with more time required in some months than others. This includes three planned board meetings of approximately 3 hours (two held online and one held in London with the option to join remotely, if needed) and the Thyroid UK AGM.
The Treasurer should be available to support the CEO, Chair and fellow trustees between board meetings, including taking responsibility to deal with issues which may arise, and have one-to-one meetings with the CEO and Finance Manager before board meetings.
Term of office
The Treasurer’s term is two years, following which the trustees may re-elect the position for a further one or two term(s).
Remuneration
Thyroid UK is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation. Trustee roles are not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses for travel can be paid for those not living in London.
Key Responsibilities
· Liaise with CEO and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy, advising on the financial implications of Thyroid UK’s strategic plan
· Present Thyroid UK’s financial position and broader context at Trustee meetings, and oversee the production of an annual budget.
· Ensure that the Board of Trustees is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation, and take a lead in interpreting financial data to fellow board members.
· Provide oversight and guidance where necessary of accounts prepared for funders and relevant statutory bodies.
· Oversee the appointment of an independent examiner of the accounts and review the appointment on a regular basis.
· Act as counter signatory on charity cheques and some applications to funders, approve payments on banking systems, and spending approval in accordance with financial management processes.
· Work in partnership with the CEO/Finance Manager in executing their responsibilities and achieving their financial goals.
· Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis.
Person Specification
In addition to fulfilling the experiences, skills and attributes of a trustee, a treasurer must also have:
1. Knowledge and experience of accounting and audit practices in the UK as they apply to companies and charities
2. Be able to interrogate and interpret financial statements
3. Communicate financial information in a meaningful and understandable way to the Board
4. Strong working knowledge of any accounting software
5. Strong attention to detail

Help us to help local people in need
We are looking for several new volunteers to become Trustees to help us grow and develop our charity.
You don’t need to have been a Trustee already, be older, or have management experience. We are looking for people who can offer their time and are keen to help improve the service that we provide to local people in need.
We are keen to make our board more representative of the people we serve. We therefore particularly welcome applications from young people, people with disabilities, women, people of colour and anyone with an understanding of the challenges faced by marginalised communities.
What we do
Citizens Advice Runnymede & Spelthorne (CARS) provides valuable advice to over 6,000 people a year, helping them with issues such as housing, debt, benefits, employment and family. CARS is a local charity at the heart of our community. We are a team of around 50 employees and volunteers funded solely by grants and donations, and we are a member of the national Citizens Advice.
What a Trustee does
As a Trustee you will make sure that the charity is well run and help develop new ways to improve the charity’s services.
Who we are looking for
Above all we are looking for volunteers who are keen to help and have time to commit.
It may also help if…
You have had experience of or know someone who has used our services or those of a similar organisation and have an insight into the needs of marginalised groups and those who need help and advice.
We are also looking to bolster our fund-raising efforts and would like to hear from you if you have any knowledge or ideas in this area. This could be helping by using your contacts, preparing funding bids or raising donations from private or corporate donors.
As a new Trustee you will benefit from:
-
Induction, training, and we will cover of out-of-pocket expenses (e.g. travel or child-care)
-
Mentoring from an experienced trustee
-
Opportunities to influence change and to make a difference
-
Learning new skills and developing your personal networks
There are 5 Board meetings per year held in Addlestone, Surrey. They currently take place on a Monday, from 5.30 to 8.00 p.m. which can be attended in person or joined online. As a small charity, Trustees will have the opportunity to be involved in supporting the charity beyond Board meetings.
If you would like to apply, we can send you an application form. If you'd prefer, we welcome letters or short videos explaining why you are interested and how you feel you can help.
