Reducing the Risk is an exciting and growing Charity dedicated to the safety of adults and children at risk of domestic abuse and the empowerment of the professionals and volunteers who support them. Oxfordshire based, we are both local (providing the high risk and Court Independent Domestic Violence Advisory service and other guidance in Oxfordshire) and national (through our training and support of practitioners).
We are seeking a new Chair of Trustees to work in partnership with the Chief Executive and take forward our vision and growth at a very exciting time for the Charity, post commissioning. Please note, while we are based in Oxfordshire, as our meetings are virtual, it is not essential that the Chair is Oxfordshire based.
What will you be doing?
We are currently seeking a new committed individual to join us as Chair of Trustees. We are looking for someone who is interested in the opportunity and has the skills to:
- Work with the Board to take forward and pace the development and expansion of the scope of the charity.
- Bring further rigour to the work of the Board, bed down the changes to the governance of the charity and expand the number of Trustees.
- Support the work of the Treasurer and CEO in the development of income; while keeping the safety and effectiveness of our services as our first priority.
What are we looking for?
- Commitment to our values including equality and diversity.
- Strategic thinking and leadership skills including capacity to appreciate opportunities and risks.
- Skills for effective chairing (and preferably chairing experience in the voluntary sector or as a school governor)
- Strong communication, influencing, listening and summarising skills.
- Understanding of good governance.
- Ability to inspire trust and credibility locally and nationally.
As well as these specialist skills, we are seeking independent and team players. You must also support our mission, be aligned to our core values and be able to act as an ambassador at public events for the organisation. The Chair provides leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees enabling them to fulfil their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity and to develop the organisation’s aims, objectives and goals. The Chair will also work in partnership with the Chief Executive to ensure that Trustee decisions are acted upon and implemented in an effective manner.
What difference will you make?
This is an important role for a new Chair in both working with the Trustees to embed the new governance and with the CEO to take forward the next stage in our strategy development and implementation. The charity is at a good point, post pandemic, and after commissioning, to look ahead, with time to reflect and to build together.
As Chair, you will play a central role in enabling us to continue supporting the victims of domestic abuse from both immediate and future harm. The role will enable you to put your professional skills to great use. It will also give you the opportunity to develop your insight and expertise into all that is involved in the management of a growing charity with a big vision.

HF Mencap supports people with learning disabilities, autism and developmental conditions. You will ensure high standards of governance and legal compliance but need not have previous experience as Company Secretary.
What will you be doing?
HF Mencap is the only disabilities charity in Hammersmith and Fulham that focuses solely on people with learning disabilities, autism, and other developmental conditions.
The Charity provides a wide range of service-user led activity, summarised in four projects: advocacy for families of young people with learning disabilities, a parent led forum for those with children and young people up to 25 with additional needs and learning disabilities, a youth development project for young adults, and a day service where the focus is on peer support and skills development through a range of inclusive activities.
As Company Secretary you will lead on maintaining high standards of governance and ensuring legal compliance.
As a Trustee you will help HF Mencap continue to provide the highest standards of professional, specialist support and care for the people who use our services and set a clear, ambitious direction for the charity’s future. The Trustees have overall responsibility for ensuring the charity is well-run and meets legal requirements, charitable objectives, and those of good governance. - Commitment to Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.
What difference will you make?
The current social and economic pressures have put the needs of those living with learning disability further down the national agenda. You will be helping to keep their voice heard and enabling a local charity to take an even more active role in helping to address the inequality faced by so many of them. As Company Secretary you will help to underpin the charity’s credibility by maintaining high standards of governance and reporting.

Are you interested in supporting children and young people’s education, mental and physical health through the performing arts, theatre and dance?
You could be a trustee for Artemis Studios, a Bracknell-based charity that’s now growing our Board, ready for the next stages of development.
Artemis Studios Performing Arts Schools Limited is a Charity only Registered in March 2022, while our not-for-personal-profit organisation has been providing similar services in Bracknell since at least August 2014 and our roots go back locally to 2007. This, of course, means our charity Board of trustees is still growing, and needs new skills and abilities to achieve that growth.
If you have specific interests or skills in funding, fund-raising, strategic planning or the legal duties of trustees, we’d really like to talk with you; in any case, if you’re interested in helping our organisation’s growth as part of our collective Board, please read on and apply.
We’re interested in you if you’re interested in us!
The role and what we are looking for in a new trustee
Trustees are the people who make the top-level decisions for our charity. Our Board includes people with experience and skills in performing and creative arts, and we’d expect new trustees to have empathy with our cause and our beneficiaries.
Interest in young people, mental health support, education would be beneficial, but potential applicants do not need in-depth understanding of, or involvement in, our operational cause.
If you have specific experience, skills or abilities in:
- Funding and fund-raising
- Strategic planning for our charity
- Legal responsibilities in a Charitable Company
we’d really welcome your application.
If you have interests other than those, don’t be put off: ask us!
Full induction to our organisation will be provided, plus specialist support as a new trustee including access to external training.
If you can think strategically and plan long-term, you have what our trustees primarily need; you’ll also need to work collectively with other Board members. Support from our paid employees is always available, under the leadership of our CEO, who works closely with the Board to develop and implement our strategic and operational plans.
We are a charity not a business, but we apply business principles to governing our organisation. We are looking for people from a variety of backgrounds to join our charity. We want to expand the diversity of our Board, in all meanings, and strongly welcome applications from people from less-represented groups.
The focus of a trustee role is strategic, and trustees will not be expected to get involved in the organisation’s operations on a day-to-day basis; however, contact and liaison with other trustees and employees is expected.
We ask for about six hours of your time per month, which includes all meetings, discussions, etc. You will need access to digital communications, as much of our charity’s business is run that way.
How to apply
This appointment is being managed for us by inVOLve Community Services, a charity-support organisation, who offer a no-obligation discussion by phone or video. A detailed Role Description and Skills Specification can be made available to you upon request.
You will need to be eligible to be a Charity Trustee and Company Director, which we will explain. Trustee appointments are subject to satisfactory references, to completion of an online Safeguarding course and an Enhanced DBS check.
Your CV or similar will be read by our existing trustees, and an interview offered as soon as mutually convenient.
