Beds SU, the student-led charity at the University of Bedfordshire, is seeking experienced, committed external trustees to add to the diversity of its Board. New trustees with Income Generation and/or Business Development, Accounting, Legal and/or IT, digital and marketing experience are sought.
Students at our university embark on life-changing journeys and we seek trustees to help us further students’ interests and improve their lives as students.
Beds SU is the representative body for all students at the University of Bedfordshire. We represent an incredibly diverse student body, with students from all backgrounds and from across the globe at multiple campuses across the UK, and we empower students to achieve their full potential.
Bedfordshire is a university where students’ journeys resource them to make deep changes to their lives, raise aspirations and open opportunities. Serving as a trustee can be an incredibly valuable way of making a contribution to wider society, not least the Bedfordshire student body.
You’ll join Beds SU at an exciting time as we launch our new strategic plan. As trustee you will support organisational renewal at a strategic level, and bring your seasoned expertise and experience to achieving the charity’s objectives.
The Board would benefit from a diversity of backgrounds, both in person and in profession. We would benefit from new trustees who bring commercial and/or business experience (e.g. sales, planning etc.); financial, legal and/or marketing experience would also be beneficial. In particular, we welcome applications from those from Black, Asian and an ethnic minority backgrounds as well as women, as they are under-represented within the Union at this level.
Beds SU trustees ordinarily meet four times per year; and trustees are asked to attend up to 2 further training or ‘away’ days. Trustees receive induction and the Board is supported by staff. Reasonable expenses are paid.

Background
Thyroid UK is a charitable company working primarily within the United Kingdom. Formed in 1998, we became a company limited by guarantee in 2007 and in 2008 we became a registered charity.
The provision of quality information for people with both diagnosed and undiagnosed thyroid disorders is the primary concern of Thyroid UK, and we work effectively in this field through dialogue with NHS departments, networking with other voluntary organisations, and providing services directly to patients.
We are a small charity, with just three permanent employees, plus contract staff, but we have a wide influence, and provide a great deal of support to our beneficiaries, within the UK and abroad. The charity’s annual income in 2023 was £96,900.54 , with the majority of that income being spent on both running the charity and conducting campaigns and activities to support our beneficiaries.
The Thyroid UK Board of Trustees is a diverse group of 7 individuals, including the CEO, a Chairperson, Deputy Chair and Treasurer. Our board members have a collective responsibility. This means that our trustees always act as a group and not as individuals.
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Thyroid UK achieves its objectives. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that Thyroid UK has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support the executive team to enable Thyroid UK to grow, thrive and achieve its mission.
Role
We are looking for a trustee who will support and provide advice on Thyroid UK’s purpose, vision, goals and activities. Their duties include:
· Approve operational strategies & policies and monitor/evaluate their implementation.
· Review/approve Thyroid UK’s financial plans, statements and budgets, and evaluate progress.
· Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organisation.
· Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored and controlled effectively.
· Support Thyroid UK’s CEO in the exercise of their delegated authority and affairs.
· Hold the chief executive to account for the effective management and delivery of the organisation’s strategic aims and objectives, where appropriate
· Keep abreast of changes in Thyroid UK’s operating environment.
· Contribute to regular reviews of Thyroid UK’s own governance. Attend board meetings, adequately prepared to contribute to discussions.
· Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect Thyroid UK’s interests, to the exclusion of their own personal and/or any third party interests.
· Contribute to the broader promotion of Thyroid UK’s objects, aims and reputation by applying your skills, expertise, knowledge and contacts.
As a small charity, there will be times when the trustees will need to be actively involved beyond board meetings. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, presenting externally, or other issues in which the trustee has special expertise.
Time requirement
The role will require a time commitment of an average of 1 to 2 days per month, with more time required in some months than others. This includes three planned board meetings of approximately 3 hours (two held online and one held in London with the option to join remotely, if needed) and the Thyroid UK AGM.
Term of office
The term of a thyroid UK trustee is two years, following which the Trustees may re-elect the position for a further one or two term(s).
Remuneration
Thyroid UK is a charitable, not-for-profit organisation. Trustee roles are not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses for travel can be paid for those not living in London.

Our Board
The VTCT Board of Trustees is responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, its financial health, probity of its activities and the development of the organisation’s aims, objectives, and goals.
The Board operates with three sub-committees: Finance & Audit Committee, HR & Remuneration Committees and Regulatory & Quality Committee.
Who we are looking for:
Trustees are at the heart of VTCT’s strategic direction, working with, and supporting the senior team and other staff colleagues. They seek to appoint up to three new Trustees to join the Board in May 2024 and who will provide a strategic contribution, and have enthusiasm, commitment, and a passion for advancing education for all people and all communities.
To complement the skills on the Board, they seek applications from people who bring leadership and/or management experience in any of the following areas:

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Smart Works Newcastle Board of Trustees.
As part of the annual Smart Works Female Unemployment Index, it was established that in 2023 the average age of a Smart Works Newcastle client is 37. Consequently, the Board is seeking a new trustee who will help raise greater awareness about the Smart Works service with young women across Newcastle and the North East.
The Young Women’s Trustee will lead the development of understanding the needs of Smart Works Newcastle’s younger clients aged 16 to 25 years (these being unemployed, NEET or in danger of becoming NEET, and those leave the care system) and become a recognised and valued advocate for this community across Newcastle and the North East.
The successful candidate will develop new and existing connections with referral partners who support young unemployed women, develop a marketing plan and social media content to better reach and communicate with this audience, and build relationships with corporate partners and grant funders who support this community. The candidate will also have the opportunity to connect with policy makers whose focus is on improving the employment outcomes for young women across Newcastle and the North East.
The Young Women’s Trustee will bring experience, insights and enthusiasm, and on occasions may also be required to design and drive specific improvement initiatives.
The time commitment is approx. a half a day every two weeks, but there will be occasions when more time is required during busy periods. The Young Person’s Trustee will be required to sit on relevant task force groups as and when their experience is relevant and attend (and prepare for) Board meetings every quarterly.
Please note, no previous trustee experience is required as a thorough induction and training programme will be provided. The trustee will also receive a board buddy, a fellow Smart Works Young Women’s Trustee, for ongoing support.

If appointed the trustee will help determine the strategic direction of Smart Works in Newcastle ensuring the plans also align with the Group Charity strategy. The Trustee will review, challenge and lead Smart Works Newcastle strategy plans to ensure decisions are commercially balanced.
You will appreciate the dynamics of Smart Works Newcastle clients and market and ensure the strategy and plan is pragmatic and also has the right amount of stretch so that the Centre can maximise targets and client experience.

They will forecast when the plan needs to change so that client and commercial targets are met.
The candidate will ideally bring experience of working with multiple organisations in the public and private sectors to provide insight and challenge. This will also bring best practice that Smart Works can use.

About the opportunity
The Smart Works Leeds Board of Trustees consists of: Chair, Treasurer, People, Wardrobe & Property, Corporate Fundraising & Partnerships, Events, and Communications & Media Trustees.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Smart Works Leeds Board of Trustees. The newly created Ambassador & Volunteer Trustee will lead on two fundamental activities at the Centre:
- Ambassadors: Smart Works Leeds currently has one Ambassador. The Board is looking to grow our ambassador community. The position will help identify, onboard and work with the team of Smart Works Leeds Ambassadors to raise the profile of the Charity across the Yorkshire region.
- Volunteers: Smart Works is powered by a community of skilled volunteers who use their time, talents and kindness to help our clients. The position will oversee volunteer management and engagement for Smart Works Leeds and will work closely with the staff team to keep the volunteer community motivated and engaged in the charity’s mission.

General Duties of a Smart Works Trustee
- Work with the Chair of the Board of Trustees to ensure the centre is well-run and governed effectively.
- Provide support to determine the strategic direction of the Centre.
- Advocate for the Centre, raising its profile and the awareness of the Smart Works service in the geographic area.
- Build strong working relationships with the Chair, fellow trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters.
- Work in a small team and tailor strong interpersonal and communication skills to all levels of seniority.
Personal Specification
The successful Ambassador and Volunteer Lead Trustee will have excellent interpersonal skills and stakeholder management experience.
They will use their skills and experience to attract, utilise and maximise the Ambassadors for Smart Works Leeds and they will nurture, coordinate and motivate the Smart Works Leeds volunteer community.
As this is a voluntary, unpaid role it requires a self-starting and proactive approach with the capacity and time to challenge, engage and contribute to the work of the Board in a positive manner.

Role Overview

Meetings and time commitment
The Board generally meets for a whole day face-to-face meeting 4 times a year at a central location (Exeter/Taunton/Tiverton) or one of our 3 hospices. In addition, Assurance Committees generally meet 4 to 6 times a year, usually during the day for a 2 hour meeting via Zoom. There is also an annual full-day Strategy Day and time set aside for Board Development. Board and Committee papers are circulated a week before the meetings to allow for preparation. Where possible they would like all Trustees to be able to attend in person on the full board meeting days, but they understand that this may not always be convenient for every Trustee and consideration will be given to include some remote attendance in the right circumstances. Trustees are appointed for a period of 3 years with the option of re-election to the Board for up to 9 years.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark covers the geographical area of the whole of London south of the Thames, all of Kent and the eastern parts of Surrey. With currently 180 parishes, 171 schools and 450 employees it is one of the largest dioceses in the UK.
The Diocese Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is run by a Board of Trustees, who are responsible for determining the strategic direction of the Diocese, management of the assets, the smooth running of the day-to-day administration and the legal discharge of its responsibilities.
The role of a Lay Trustee is about helping the Archdiocese achieve its ambitious vision for evangelisation and leading people to Christ, while especially promoting our diverse and vibrant communities. The Archdiocese is seeking to secure a range of skills and expertise in the appointments, which include legal, property or safeguarding. Experience within the education sector may be helpful.
In addition to the general duties and responsibilities outlined by the Charity Commission of England and Wales, Lay and Clerical Trustees collaborate to help shape the strategic vision of the charity and work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and his team focussed on key functions including education, fundraising and property management.
This will mostly be achieved through attendance at the Trustee meetings, which take place at least once a quarter. There is a minimum requirement of three meetings a year, with additional meetings for the first year.
Lay Trustees must be practicing Catholics, but they do not have to be Southwark Archdiocese parishioners.
