Our Board members are unpaid volunteers called trustees. They fill an essential role in ensuring our charity improves the lives of older and vulnerable people around the borough of Lambeth. We hope that this pack lets you know more about the charity, the role of a trustee and how to apply to become one. 

We currently have seven Board members with space for up to five more. We want to find people who have a desire to direct services that enable lives to be changed for the better.   We want to increase the diversity of the Board bringing different life experiences which match the Lambeth community, broad and diverse as it is. Ideally we want people that bring new skills and experience or enhance those already in place, but this is not essential. It’s not necessary to have previous Board experience.

St George’s Hospital Charity is a significant and positive force for change within our hospital and community. Thanks to the incredible support we receive from the wider community, we are able to fund a wide range of projects across our hospitals that make a real difference to staff and patients in southwest London. 

Main role and purpose of position 

St George’s Hospital Charity is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. The Board are the trustees and directors of the charity. The trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, in accordance with the terms of its constitution, legal and regulatory requirements and best practice.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Collectively oversee the strategic direction of the charity and work towards the achievement of the charity’s vision and mission
• Ensure that the charity complies with legal, regulatory, and fiduciary responsibilities, in accordance with the terms of its constitution 
• Identify potential development opportunities for the charity, and leverage relationships to facilitate this
• Protect the property, reputation and resources of the charity through ongoing identification, monitoring and management of risks
• Advocate for the charity’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
• Encourage teamwork among Board members and create a strong, profitable and fulfilling working relationship with trustees and the Chief Executive
• Appoint and give support to the Chief Executive of the charity
• Act in the best interests of the charity at all times and to the benefit of present and future beneficiaries of the charity
• Make a positive contribution to the charity’s governance, in accordance with the Trustee Code of Conduct and the Board's Terms of Reference

Qualifications and experience

Fundraising & Trustee

Essential:

• A commitment to the mission, values, and ethos of the charity
• Knowledge of the voluntary sector
• Current or recent professional experience in major donor fundraising and/or strategic partnerships with companies or other organisations
• Passion for the cause and some form of local or regional community connection
• Able to demonstrate evidence of effective delivery working as part of a team 
• A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion 
• Ability to lead through facilitating, enabling, and consensus-building
• Ability to challenge constructively and supportively
• Ability to operate strategically, noticing trends, opportunities, and risks

Communications and change management Trustee

• Current or recent professional experience in change management and/or 
• Experience of strategic and digital communications

Clinician/general practitioner

Essential:

• All of the above 
• Current or recent professional experience working in a hospital environment or in the community as a GP or nurse 

Vice-Chair

The Vice-Chair supports the Chair of Trustees in leading the board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively, in service of the charity’s vision and mission. The Vice-Chair helps leads in an inclusive way, supporting the board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the Chief Executive. The Vice-Chair is also an ambassador for the charity and may deputise for the Chair of Trustees as and when necessary.

• Experience of being a trustee
• A keen sense of strategic purpose 
• An inclusive leadership style: able to inspire and support everyone to participate on an equal footing
• The ability to listen and engage effectively. You are comfortable with challenge and debate and are able to encourage that in others whilst fostering a collaborative board environment

As part of our trustee board you will oversee our continuously expanding young charity. Your expertise will be essential to helping our aim of promoting the conservation, improvement and protection of the physical and natural environment for the public benefit by:

- advancing education and increasing awareness amongst the community of the benefits of reducing carbon emissions and energy saving and effective ways to make such reductions and savings

- promoting amongst the community the reduction of carbon emissions and energy saving.

Cure Parkinson’s is a UK registered medical research charity that supports research internationally focused on disease modification in Parkinson’s. Preclinically, our funding remit is centred around Parkinson’s research that is of a disease modifying nature and within 5 years of clinical testing in people with Parkinson’s. Cure Parkinson’s also funds clinical research, particularly trials and sub studies of clinical trials evaluating disease modification in Parkinson’s. Cure Parkinson’s is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and as such we adhere to the principles and guidelines on research management set out by the organisation.

The Cure Parkinson’s Research Committee (RC) is responsible for reviewing research proposals that are submitted on a quarterly basis. The RC is a committee of 10-12 academics and people with Parkinson’s who voluntarily meet four times per year to evaluate approximately 10 grant applications per round. If an application is considered to be within the funding remit and of interest to the RC, they will be sent out for expert peer review. The feedback from those peer reviews will be used by the RC at the next RC meeting (~3 months later) to decide whether to recommend funding the project to the Cure Parkinson’s Trustees.

The main purpose of the RC Chair is to provide leadership to, and oversee management of the RC.

The Cure Parkinson’s research team provides support to the Chair by organising the RC meetings and managing the grant application process (including organisation of the expert peer reviewers).

Unfold is an established local charity (previously known as Westminster Befriend a Family), supporting young people and families to reach their potential, identifying and achieving their goals through mentoring.  We support families and young people in Westminster and its neighbouring boroughs with mentoring programmes and peer support groups for women with children.

Unfold Trustees 

Trustees play a key role in ensuring that Unfold achieves its core purpose and overseeing the overall management and administration of the charity. They also help to ensure that Unfold has a clear strategic vision and that we are working in line with our charitable aims. Trustees support and challenge Unfold’s CEO to enable Unfold to thrive.

We are looking for two Trustees to support our vision and take on the following responsibilities: 

Responsibilities 

• Support and advise on Unfold’s vision, goals and activities 

• Approve operational strategies and policies and monitor and evaluate their implementation 

• Oversee the charity’s budgets and financial plans and monitor and evaluate progress 

• Ensure that risks are being identified, monitored and managed effectively

• Keep up to date with changes within the environment that Unfold operates 

• Engage with and be accountable to our service-user accountability structures, our Youth Advisory Council and our Women’s Advisory Council, who support us in setting strategic direction and to whom we are accountable.

• Attend board meetings and be adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion. At least 50% of those meetings will be in person in our fully accessible London office. 

• Support the promotion of Unfold's aims and reputation

• Contribute to the charity’s sub-committees and attend sub-committee meetings adequately prepared to contribute to the discussion

About Us:

Evolve Counselling is a long-established charitable social enterprise, providing low cost, affordable or funded mental health counselling to adults in mainly Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties. Our counselling community is made up of 50 – 60 qualified self-employed practitioners, working part-time. We deliver talking therapies to adults – online and in person. Our service delivers around 500 counselling sessions per month to a broad range of individuals, many of whom would not otherwise be able to access counselling support. Evolve also provides supervision, reflective practice, critical incident support, and mental health awareness and related training, to organisations and businesses large and small.

Our Trustee Board is currently drawn from the counselling and therapies community, plus commercial and other charity backgrounds. Now, with crucial development of the CIO ahead, we are looking for new members to expand the Board to its maximum ten places and to gain skills and insight from an equal, diverse and inclusive group that takes in business skills, knowledge of charities, and experience of not-for-profit finances to make growth plans a reality.

The Board will keep us on track with good governance through oversight of our work, and will also help our keen new CEO to secure a sound financial base from which to grow our operations to meet the ever-increasing demand for our services.

Trustees wanted for Nantgarw China Works Museum

Nantgarw China Works is home to the finest porcelain ever produced. It was established in 1813 and produced porcelain that has achieved international fame before producing earthenware for daily use until 1920. The site was rescued from total decay in 1990 but many of the Scheduled historic structures remain in urgent need of care. Today the China Works is a museum displaying the history of the porcelain and pottery produced at the site, a working pottery where three ceramicists are based (one of whom produces porcelain items from the rediscovered recipe of 1813), and a major teaching institution running some 500 workshop sessions in heritage crafts. The site is a popular venue for local groups and societies as well as an increasing number of coach tours.

Since 2007 the Museum has been operated by a charitable trust which determines the strategic directions for its development. It is staffed by volunteers who carry out a wide range of duties under the oversight of our Strategic Development Manager. After considerable growth over the past decade, we are now focussed on the steps necessary for expansion and sustainability. We are currently seeking to achieve Accredited Museum status and in line with our vision and the conclusions of a recent Options Appraisal exercise are working on developing a multi-million-pound application to ‘transform where the world’s finest porcelain was made into a vibrant centre for ceramic history and contemporary innovation.’

At this exciting time in our history, we would welcome applications to join the existing seven members of the Trustee board. Trustees are unpaid and meet formally six times a year but are expected to develop a close relationship with the site and help in any way they can. Working together, Trustees are expected to:

• Set the strategic framework and direction to enable the Museum to deliver benefits to the public, to achieve its goals and to flourish
• Ensure that the charity is carrying out its purposes for the benefit of the public
• Comply with our governing document and the law
• Act in the charity’s best interests
• Manage the charity’s resources responsibly

About the role.

Following the decision of our current Chair, the Solihull College & University CentreCorporation welcomes interest from candidates who have the time, passion, experience, and interest to become a Governor and our Chair Designate in summer 2024.

Initially joining as the named Chair Designate, with time to engage in an extended and supportive handover period through the 2024 autumn term, we look forward to welcoming the person appointed as Chair of Solihull College & University Centre from early 2025.

The Chair provides leadership to the Corporation and its members, working closely with the Principal & CEO and the Director of Corporate Governance, Risk & Compliance. Supported by two Vice Chairs, the Chair ensures Governors have oversight of organisational development and are made aware of risks affecting strategy, finance, staffing, student experience, or reputation, through receiving plans and reports from the Principal & CEO and her senior team.

The Corporation is comparable to a board of non-executive directors and is composed of members from the local community, stakeholders, students and staff members.

Actively involved in long-term visioning and approving the educational character of Solihull College & University Centre, the Chair ensures Governors’ diverse skills, areas of specialist knowledge, networks, and professional opinions are used for the advancement of the organisation and in the most appropriate way.

With up to 19 Members of the Corporation, plus two External Members, the Chair ensures professional engagement between the Corporation and both employees and learners, through both formal means (meetings) and informal opportunities (such as events and visits).

Governors help the organisation to maintain a long-term focus whilst working on its shorter-term goals and plans. The day-to-day management is very much the responsibility of the Principal & CEO, and the executive management team. The Corporation is advised by a Director of Corporate Governance, Risk & Compliance who is part of the senior leadership team.

There are seven meetings of the Corporation throughout the academic year (September through to July). In addition to this, there are additional meetings of the Search & Governance Committee, the Audit & Risk Committee, the Remuneration Committee, and the Financial Oversight Group. Opportunities for Governors to participate in visits and meetings with students are arranged throughout the year.

It is expected that – with preparation for meetings, regular contact with Governors and both the Principal & CEO and Director of Corporate Governance, Risk & Compliance, plus any ambassadorial duties and training – the person appointed should plan to spend up to five days per month fulfilling the duties of the Chair.

Who we are looking for.

To be successful in this non-executive Chair role, we believe it is important that the person appointed brings experience in strategic leadership. When considering the requirement to be the ‘critical friend’ for a chief executive of a complex £50m business of education and training, set across several campuses and operating across the West Midlands, having a Chair with skills and knowledge which supports the development of the Principal & CEO, the executive team, and the broader Corporation and its members, is important.

Ideally, our next Chair will be an experienced non-executive, and know from experience the difference between operational leadership, and strategic oversight and scrutiny. The application of this knowledge will be welcomed, so that we may continue to benefit from the mutual respect that exists between the non-executive and executive representatives at the College.

If the person appointed doesn’t have direct experience of being a non-executive director or board member, then we will expect them to be able to demonstrate their ability to chair well and know how to get the very best out of a talented and committed voluntary non-executive group.

More than experience, we need a Chair who is passionate about the work that we do to transform the lives of our learners and provide opportunities to help shape their futures. The further education sector is a wonderful and enriching part of our education sector and a place where anyone, with any background or starting point can come, learn, and progress.

Showroom Work Station is a registered charity and a cultural hub for South Yorkshire and the North of England. 

Located in a converted 1930’s art deco building, the venue is home to a four-screen cinema, creative industries business centre, event space, and café bar, in the heart of Sheffield city centre. 

We are looking to recruit new Trustees to join our board.  We are particularly keen to hear from anyone with knowledge and understanding of major capital projects, fundraising or the hospitality sector.  However, if you don’t have expertise in any of these areas, but still feel that you have something to offer, please still get in touch.  This is a unique opportunity to join a creative and passionate team and help shape the future of the organisation.

As a trustee you will oversee the operation of a major cultural cinema exhibiting a diverse film programme with first run and retrospectives of curated work, including archive, documentaries, and many unique one-off programmes with regular visiting filmmakers.  We are home to some very successful film festivals and host many unique events each month.

Through our trading subsidiary, we also manage the Work Station creative industries business centre, operate a successful bar/café, and conferencing facilities.

Our Trustees work closely with the Chair, Chief Executive and Senior Management Team to provide clear strategic direction to the organisation, helping to agree policy, define goals, set targets, and evaluate performance.

As with all our Trustees, we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate excellent communication skills and have a good understanding of local, regional, and cultural agendas.

Trustees are required to attend approximately 5 Board meetings per year (usually held on the last Monday of the month, 6 pm – 8 pm) and to offer relevant support and specialist knowledge to enable us to meet the objectives of our business. 

The post is not paid but all Trustees receive invitations to special events and have a weekly allocation of free cinema tickets (subject to availability).

Key Responsibilities

Ensuring effective governance

• Providing support and leadership to ensure trustees fulfil their duties and contribute to strategic decision-making
• Maintain a supportive team culture among trustees, leveraging their varied experiences and networks for the charity's benefit
• Supporting new trustees to develop their participation and contribution
• Oversee the plan for trustee recruitment to ensure succession, diversity & relevant skills

Development of the charity’s long-term strategy

• Working in collaboration with trustees, the CEO, and the Senior Executive Team to oversee the development of the long-term strategic plan
• Review  delivery of the annual plan to achieve funding & project objectives
• Research broader networks, potential partnerships & stakeholders to support the charity's strategic goals and funding requirements

Working with the CEO

• Develop a productive working relationship
• Agree their annual objectives and provide support and oversight to deliver them

Acting as a representative of the charity

• Be an ambassador, developing our network with decision makers and other stakeholders as appropriate

The Charity are dedicated to delivering exceptional care through high quality, personalised services, that enable the people they support to live their best lives. withYOU work with people experiencing different levels of vulnerability, from those with lifelong support needs to those experiencing homelessness for the first time.

They do this across three core service areas – homelessness, prevention and housing support, learning disability and neurodiversity, and older age care.

With a strong senior leadership team and 250 multi-skilled staff, withYOU are an ambitious organisation undertaking a substantial transformation and improvement programme to expand their services and work towards a bigger and brighter future. We are looking for several trustees to join their board of trustees who can play an integral role in governing the charity.

The Role of Trustee

The withYOU Board plays a vital role in providing leadership and direction to the organisation. As a trustee, you will contribute to determining strategy, ensuring the availability of resources, and promoting high standards of governance to comply with legal and regulatory requirements. You will work collectively with other board members to monitor performance, assess risks, and oversee the implementation of innovative approaches to service provision and business development.

The role of Board Member is non-executive and unpaid; the Senior Leadership Team, led by the Chief Executive Officer, is responsible for operational management within a framework of controls established by the Board. In practice, the Board and CEO work in partnership to develop innovative approaches to business development and delivery and to safeguard the organisation’s future.

We are particularly interested in those who come from a background in: health and social care, finance, HR/organisational development, business development and risk/assessment.

Previous Trustee experience or senior managerial experience is not essential, what we value are individuals who have a keen interest in supporting the growth of withYOU through their unique skill sets, a strong commitment to deliver high-quality care and alignment to their values.

Board meetings are a mixture of online and in person in Edinburgh, there are a minimum of 6 meetings per year with additional time required for various events e.g., recruitment to senior roles, site/service visits, training and development. The estimated time commitment per month is 2.5-5 hours. The term is four years, with an option to extend for another term.

Time commitment and expenses:

• This is a voluntary position with reasonable expenses reimbursed.
• Minimum commitment of 17 hours per year, including board meetings and team events.

Man&Boy - Trustees and Treasurer

Man & Boy are seeking at least 3 new Trustees, including a Treasurer, who are passionate about family values and committed to its mission. 

Man & Boy work to enhance family relationships, between boys who may be struggling with life and a significant male in their lives. This could be the biological father, but could be a stepfather, grandfather, uncle or even an older sibling. Its programming uses diverse activities where the man can be a role model to the boy, based on fun, encouragement, trust and open communication. It generally focuses on boys between the ages of 8 and 11 years of age, prior to them entering the challenges of adolescence and secondary school. 

The relief and rehabilitation of people with disabilities,in particular by encouraging them to lead fuller and more active lives, and, wherever possible, assisting them to cope with their disability through active participation in he visual arts.

What will you be doing?

Conquest Art (CA) is a long-established charity which runs groups offering art in a conducive atmosphere for people with various health problems and challenges.  At the regular sessions they can make friends and enjoy the benefits of creativity through art.

The charity has several groups in the Surrey area as well as throughout the UK.  Exhibitions and promotional events take place at various times during the year.

CA seeks an addition to its small team of hands-on Trustees to assist with the management of the charity and, also, with publicity and promotional activities.  Apart from good communication skills and an interest in charity governance, no special qualifications are needed.

Trustee meetings are currently held bi-monthly on Zoom.
