Job description

Trustee

Voluntary/unpaid Role.

Do you want to make a difference to the lives of women and children fleeing domestic abuse?

Women’s Aid in Luton is the sole provider of refuge accommodation in Luton for women and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse. One of our refuges is specifically for women from South Asian communities supported by staff who speak Punjabi, Bengali and Urdu. We also have a refuge accommodating single women with complex support needs, such as poor mental health and drug and alcohol dependencies. These issues are often a direct result of trauma brought on by the experience of domestic violence and abuse.

With the current challenges facing our sector, we are focused on securing on-going funding, providing more stability to the organisation following recent staff and board turnover.   The current priorities are to create financial sustainability and resilience within the organisation, focusing on a robust funding strategy and a dynamic response to risk.

We are seeking to strengthen our existing Board of Trustees through recruiting additional members. We are particularly looking to recruit trustees with an understanding of governance, risk management, charity boards and safeguarding. In addition, we are keen to hear from women with professional knowledge in charity or property law,  HR or fundraising expertise. We are also seeking new trustees who ideally  live in the Luton area, have a strong sense of community and are passionate advocates for victim /survivors of domestic abuse.

At the heart of our service is the desire to provide safe, secure and confidential accommodation for women and their children and give them the practical and emotional support that they need to start afresh.  We have a  dedicated team of specialist staff who support women and children accessing our services and advocate for them as they empower themselves to build a new life, free from fear.

“Joining Women’s Aid in Luton as a Board member has enabled me to use my professional expertise in a way that gives back to the community. I know that all the energy and time I give is helping to strengthen the organisation and ultimately the women and children it seeks to support. Joining the Board has been immensely rewarding and I highly recommend it as a valuable way to volunteer your time for a good cause.” – current Board Trustee at Women’s Aid in Luton.

If you have some time, energy and interest in the domestic abuse sector and believe you can make a difference to Women’s Aid in Luton, we would love to hear from you.

If you would like to have an informal chat about the role or arrange a visit please contact our Chief Executive, Caroline.

Due to the sensitive nature of this role we will be considering female volunteers only for this post in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Requirement (Equality Act 2010, pursuant to schedule 9 part 1).  Applicants will be required to have a satisfactory enhanced disclosure through the Disclosure and Barring Service.

We actively encourage applications from women from a variety of backgrounds, and with a range of skills and experiences. We are particularly interested to hear from women from Black, Asian and minoritised communities and women who have personal experience of domestic abuse.
