Vocational/Services Volunteer Roles

At WWT, we create and conserve wetlands and save species. We bring awe-inspiring nature up close and let it do the talking. We help people to feel part of something amazing and motivate them to make a difference. In this role you will be visiting your local WWT centre on a weekly basis to capture wildlife spectacles, species, visitors’ experiences and our volunteers for inclusion in promotional material for print, online and social media.

What will you be doing?

• Capturing images of the centre, its wildlife, wetland landscapes, events and people on a regular basis (depending on skill level).

• Receiving direction from the HQ Media Production team and centre Marketing Manager as well as taking pictures whenever you find an opportunity (a Gap list of required images will be available for you to work to).

• Working proactively with staff and volunteers at your local centre to capture key events and sightings that would make engaging content for website, marketing materials, social media etc.

Who are we looking for?

No formal qualifications are required but you will ideally be able to provide good quality examples of images you have taken to demonstrate a high level of skill in any or all of wildlife, landscape, or people photography. In addition, this role would be suitable for you if you:

• Are proactive in seeking out photo opportunities

• Are patient and willing to spend time waiting for the right filming opportunity

• Have a keen eye for interesting and inspiring photographs •

Don’t mind working in all weathers and interacting with visitors, volunteers and staff

• Are comfortable with file handling and transfer between centres and HQ at Slimbridge

• Have use of your own photographic equipment

• Policy Development: To develop robust policies that align with our mission and support our organizational objectives.

Responsibilities:

• Updating the events calendar

• Planning events in advance - particularly face-to-face events

• Promoting events through email

• Assisting with the monthly newsletter, including the latest events and liaising with IT to get it sent out

• Creating graphics on social media for events and partnerships with other organisations

• Liaising with the social media team, ensuring that events are promoted on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram

• Thinking up new event ideas

• Working to ensure the smooth running of the monthly book club

• Identifying new organisations and individuals who are queer Muslims and allies to collaborate with

• Contacting organisations and venues

• Working with others in the team to arrange in-person events

• Sending thank-you emails after all events

• Updating contact/partner database

Experience/skills required:

• Working in a team but also independently, using initiative

• Ability to use OutSavvy, Google Suite (including Google Calendar and Google Meet), HootSuite and Discord (or willingness to learn)

We are looking to find a volunteers for our Memory Lane Project to assist us in providing sessions that will be stimulating, engaging and include a variety of activities that could include word and memory games, paired and group discussions, puzzles and board games, seated exercise and physical activities such as parachute and ball games and target practice.

 You will have fun and enjoy this sessions on a Friday between 11.00am – 1.00pm

About the service 

Gwynneth Morgan Day Centre, where we support older people, adults with dementia, and adults with disabilities between 10am-3pm Monday-Friday. This could include supporting our dementia groups, or providing a hairdressing or nail care service as a treat for our service users.

What is the Best You Can Be Mentoring Programme?

The Best You can Be Mentoring Programme is a community-led initiative supported by the Mercers fund. It aims to engage young boys and girls from the ages 9-18 years of ethnic minority backgrounds living in or attending a school in Hackney, in a 12- month mentoring relationship. 

The programme focuses on three key areas:

1. Improving school engagement

2. Educational attainment

3. Supporting young people in building future plans

Activities might include helping with homework, helping students with reading, writing, maths and science, life skills, understanding the working world and sharing skills and experiences, playing a board game, financial literacy support, CV writing, writing an article for the mentoring magazine and group trips to places of interest. 

Note: Mentors must be willing to undergo an enhanced DBS check and a comprehensive mentoring and safeguarding training programme before being matched with a student. The ACS will cover the cost of the DBS check and provide training.

Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help. Our Cat Welfare Team Leaders have the important role of coordinating, encouraging and supporting teams of fosterer volunteers and cat care volunteers. They help make sure volunteers with direct cat care roles are happy and confident and provide advice and guidance when needed. This incredible teamwork means we are able to help more cats and kittens in need.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Volunteering alongside colleagues including the Branch Coordinator, Cat Welfare team, Branch Development Manager and Vet team to ensure that CP cat care policies, procedures and standards are applied in branch
• Support fosterers to follow Cats Protection cat welfare policies and procedures
• Acting as the main point of contact within the branch for cat welfare and ensuring that welfare updates are shared and implemented effectively
• Supporting the branch by ensuring that accurate and up to date records of all cats helped are maintained, using specified Cats Protection systems
• Attending relevant Cats Protection volunteer training sessions and encouraging other volunteers to do likewise
• With the other volunteers, recruit, induct and support all branch fosterers and cat care volunteers using Cats Protection processes
• Represent the branch at relevant meetings
• Play an active part in the branch committee, being part of the branch team leading on cat adoption information and updates
• Collaborating with the Cats Protection Cat Adoption Team Leader to ensure the highest standards of cat care are applied in line with Cats Protection policy and procedures

You will make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by leading and supporting other volunteers in direct cat care roles. You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers.

• Basic knowledge and experience of cat welfare
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

• Basic IT skills to use Cats Protection systems - training and support can be provided
• The ability to handle sensitive issues with objectivity and pragmatism
• Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+

Time expectation

The time expectation for this role will vary depending on the number of volunteers and cats in care. Our Cat Welfare Team Leaders usually spend between 10 to 12 hours per week in this role which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Grow Wild volunteers have been called the ‘next generation of naturalists’ in the Richmond area. We go weekly into the local green spaces at Ham Avenues / The Copse, and maintain the green spaces so that humans and wildlife can share them. 

We particularly welcome young people and those who experience barriers in accessing green spaces and volunteering opportunities. The two-hour-long sessions are accessible, and are an energising, communal way of connecting with others and nature. 

We provide support, induction, and are happy to make the activities more accessible for you. Let us know what you need to make the most of this opportunity.

Across the UK, many cats are cared for by volunteer fosterers who provide a stable, safe and loving environment in their homes or in purpose-built pens in their gardens. They provide vital hands-on care and accommodation to stray or abandoned cats or cats whose owners could sadly no longer keep them, and are part of a dedicated team of volunteers committed to finding new homes for cats in need. Our fosterers carry out this role with support from their local branch or centre.

Most of our fosterers care for one or two cats at a time and enjoy providing lots of TLC to those cats, who have been pre-loved or have had a difficult start in life. Some of our fosterers look after new mums and kittens and provide round-the-clock care to newborns to give them the best start in life.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Meeting the needs of the cats and kittens in your care
• Cleaning and looking after the cats’ environment and equipment
• Feeding, grooming and administering medication
• Spending time enriching the cats’ experience in care including; play, exercise and stroking
• Maintaining high standards of animal welfare

Our transport volunteers provide vital assistance to our teams and volunteer groups in the local area by transporting equipment, litter, food– and even cats! They have the essential role of connecting our network of volunteers, sites, vets and supporters.

Without the passionate and committed teams of volunteers across Cats Protection, we wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of cats and kittens each year that rely on us for help.

• Arranging and transporting equipment, litter and cat food
• Transporting cats to and from vets, foster homes and centres
• Transporting equipment to and from events

As part of this role you will be using own car to transport donations and cats. Mileage will be re-imbursed.

• Either access to a vehicle or happy to drive a Cats Protection van (subject to availabilty)
• The ability to carry out some heavy lifting

In order to help you feel confident in your fosterer role we ask that prior to looking after your first foster cat you complete some online cat welfare learning modules.

You'll have the energy, integrity, passion, and skills to work with the Board of Trustees, our CEO and staff team, and our community, to drive forward a successful and dynamic future for our charity and the families we support.

We’re particularly looking to add the following professional skills and experiences to our team.

• Developing digital products, tools and/or services.
• Directly supporting children and/or families on an ongoing professional basis.
• Fundraising in a charity through voluntary donations or commercial income.

You don’t need to have been a Trustee before, but you do need to be willing to do some training to help you understand the role and the responsibilities that come with it.

Expenses

You won’t get paid for your time, but we’ll make sure you aren’t out of pocket by covering the cost of your travel to meetings, childcare or other care if you need it, and a range of other expenses you might have while doing the role. We’ll book and/or pay for these in advance if you prefer.

A bit about this role

At Cats Protection we passionately believe that neutering cats before they can breed is an essential part of cat ownership, and without neutering the UK’s cat population would quickly get out of control. Our neutering volunteers help spread positive neutering messages and make it easier for owners on low incomes to get their cats neutered. They help raise awareness of the benefits of neutering, promote our neutering schemes and respond to enquiries from members of the public.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Promoting the benefits of neutering and our neutering schemes
• Responding to enquiries about neutering
• Completing relevant neutering paperwork and distributing neutering vouchers
• Following up with cat owners to make sure that vouchers are used
• Ensuring all cats and kittens are neutered in line with Cats Protection policies and procedures
