Buenos Aires, Argentina
Job description

The kindergarten is located in a humble neighborhood called Independencia, near Jose Leon Suarez, about 1 hour from Buenos Aires Downtown. It welcomes 55 children from 2 to 5 years old from Monday through Friday, and has 3 people working there.

Background Information

The kindergarten opened in 2009, after two years of construction of the building. Before this kindergarten was founded, there was no kindergarten or soup kitchen to ensure that the children receive at least two well balanced meals a day. However, the kindergarten does more than provide food for the children, as the teachers aim to educate both children and their parents. They started with a very small space that was limited to a single classroom and had two teachers who worked there. At first, they welcomed 7 children for breakfast. The original idea was to create a place where the teachers were selected by the directors for the caring of the children. The founder and coordinator, "Lore", started this project after working in the social field for 20 years; which she still does in order to earn a living. This community in particular needs the support mainly for the children, and this kindergarten provides that opportunity since it is difficult to find it elsewhere. All the people who work there try to change the reality of the children whose families do not have a disposable income, in order to make them feel sustained. Organizing and creating this place was truly difficult and took many years because they had to find organizations willing to help, places where they could buy the food, and funds to develop the house and make it bigger to welcome more children. Today, it is composed of three classrooms, a kitchen, four toilets and a first floor. “Travesuras” also symbolizes a link between the parents and the schools the children will go to after the kindergarten.

Why is this project important for the community?

The area where the kindergarten is located is relatively new and still developing. A majority of the workers that live here, work in construction, therefore they try to urbanize the area all together. A major issue is dealing with waste, which is abundant and generates illnesses. This problem is also due to the fact that the waste companies are private, therefore, the community inhabitants cannot afford to hire them and the government does not pay either. This project brings together a multitude of people who all want to improve the situation of the area and, to make this possible, hard work is necessary. Neighbors say they all try to help collecting funds for the kindergarten with the aim to expand it and welcome more children. Thus, the goal of the kindergarten is to educate the children and help their parents to take care of their children during the day while they're away working.

Volunteer's Role

The volunteer is able to do a lot to help in this context. They can play with the children, organize activities to entertain them such as music, movies, sports or art activities. The volunteer can be the source of energy and good vibes for the children and they can also be a shoulder to lean on for the teachers. In addition to this, the volunteers can also exchange with them about their respective cultures and traditions, imparting their knowledge with those who do not have the same opportunities as them. Their viewpoint can be a positive thing for the improvement of the organization of the kindergarten and they can also provide a fun change in the daily routine of the children.

What can you learn as a volunteer?

In this area, where a variety of cultural communities live together, the volunteer learns a lot about social diversity. Moreover, they can share with the local inhabitants their customs and experiences, providing for improvements on the organization of the nursery because they welcome any and all suggestions. The volunteer will also benefit from the company of the kids, who are always full of energy and happy to see them! They will receive a good lesson in patience and learn to see everything from a different perspective. All in all, this nursery is a place wealthy in the amount of love that circulates among everyone involved.

The day starts at 8:00 am and ends after lunch, around 12:30pm. This program is not available during summer holidays in Argentina (from mid-December till March) and 2 weeks in July (winter holidays).
