What is a Service Committee Chair?

There are SSAFA committees on many military bases in the UK and overseas. Each one has a Chairperson to oversee all aspects of the committee. Reporting to the Regional Chair, you will ensure that the committee is running in line with SSAFA’s policies to keep clients and volunteers safe; that all services provided are appropriate and effective and that the committee is financially sound. You will be the public face of SSAFA on site.

Why do we need you?

We’ve been supporting the Armed Forces community for more than 130 years. In recognition of their service to the Nation we aim to provide financial, practical and emotional support when it’s needed most. To do this we need volunteers who can represent SSAFA on the base and beyond, ensure that everyone knows about SSAFA services and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

When would you be needed and where would you be based?

This role is about leadership, networking, coordination, and administration. Many volunteers can carry out this role from home and from their place of work.

The role would suit someone looking to offer a regular time commitment. You would need to organise and attend a minimum of four meetings each year. The Chair is an Office Bearer and in addition to voting rights, holds the casting vote.

What would you be doing?

• Providing support to all SSAFA Service Committee volunteers

• Holding regular committee meetings, at least four per year

• Ensuring that all requests for grants are reviewed by the committee in line with the committee’s Terms of Reference

• Working with the Community Volunteer Coordinator to oversee all SSAFA community volunteering, ensuring beneficiaries get support that is effective and timely

• Monitoring volunteer numbers against the demand for support and recruiting new volunteers as needed

• Building positive relationships with the senior management team on the base and the local SSAFA branch working in the wider community

• Providing reports and information to the local SSAFA branch and to SSAFA’s Central Office

• Overseeing an annual plan and fundraising programme to meet the locally identified needs

• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer, or fundraiser

• Working with Central Office staff to ensure all volunteers complete all mandatory tasks in line with the training and vetting requirements of their role.

• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including adhering to our policies such as the volunteering policy and data protection policy

What are we looking for?

• Friendly and approachable people of any age (18+) with some experience of coordinating people

• Good written and spoken English

• Ability to engage the senior managers on site representing SSAFA and the needs of clients

• Respectful and non-judgemental approach with beneficiaries, their family, other agencies represented on base and SSAFA colleagues

• Ability to send and receive emails – you will receive your own SSAFA email address which you will be required to use when exercising your role

• Volunteer management skills

• Ability to keep within the boundaries of the role e.g. prompt reporting of safeguarding concerns in line with SSAFA policies

• Practice confidentiality and data protection in line with SSAFA policies

• Willingness and means to travel to meetings or events as required

In this role you’ll be able to develop your writing skills, and gain an experience of communicating across a range of digital channels.

Do you enjoy working with people and would you like to make a positive impact for Turtle Doves? This species was once widespread and numerous but now is down to 2100 pairs in the UK. The Operation Turtle Dove project in partnership of RSPB, Natural England, Penthorpe Conservation Trust and Fair to Nature was established to conserve this iconic, red-listed species. Our staff and volunteers are working with landowners to try and halt and reverse the population decline but we need to measure our progress. Following on from the successful 2021 National Turtle Dove survey, we need to expand our network of survey volunteers in Kent, Sussex and Essex to enable yearly monitoring of survey squares for Turtle Doves.

We are looking for an organised person with excellent communication & IT skills to join our team and to help run the Turtle Dove monitoring program and supporting a network of volunteers. Experience in carrying out bird surveys is welcome but NOT essential, we can provide training so you can understand the role of the surveyors you will be recruiting and co-ordinating. This role could be carried out remotely. This is a year-round roll with peaks in activity before and after the survey season which runs from 11th May until 31st July. All equipment needed will be supplied.

Volunteer Coordinators undertake a wide range of activities, including:

Tasks:

• Dealing with queries from potential new volunteers who get in touch
• Being the first point of contact for our existing volunteers and answering general queries
• Lead on advertising new volunteer roles (on the RSPB and external websites, in the local community)
• Set up interviews with potential volunteers and assist with induction administration
• Administrative tasks such as recording volunteer hours, registering new volunteers on our database, organising surveys, receiving, and entering data and processing expense claims
• Organising and managing a small budget for volunteer thank-you events at the end of the survey season.
• Helping to promote the project through internal comms such as project newsletters

More potential experience (optional):

• Analysing and screening conservation footage from trail cameras
• Helping to coordinate large-scale orders of supplementary feeds for Turtle Dove seed

Every bunny needs some bunny sometimes! Can you help foster our rabbits whilst we are looking for their forever home?

The Cheshire Altrincham Branch covers a large area of Cheshire and we work closely with the Inspectors to provide direct animal welfare services in our area. The main activity of our branch is to rehome cats, dogs and other animals. We rely on fosterers to look after and care for our animals until we can find them their forever homes.

You will be joining our lovely team of friendly rabbit fosterers and receive support from your branch manager and other fosterers in the team.

Often when we think about animal fostering, cats and dogs spring to mind, but have you ever thought about fostering rabbits? The RSPCA received more than 5,000 reports last year about rabbits relating to neglect or abandonment and rescued an average of 340 small furries a month! To help us with the rehoming of these rabbits, we are actively looking to add to our fantastic team of volunteer fosterers.

As a rabbit fosterer, you would play an essential role in providing the rabbits in our care with a temporary home whilst they are being rehomed. Like us, even small furries have specific needs and requirements, but rest assured, once we have guided you through the fostering process the animal centre will ensure that you have all the necessary guidance, equipment, food, and veterinary care.

When our rabbits are in your foster care, you will:

- Provide them with care, safe suitable housing, and space for playtime, as outlined in our policies and guidelines.

- Ensure that they are groomed if appropriate, and fed and watered (they eat a bundle of hay as big as  they are every day!)

- Provide them with suitable and clean bedding to keep them cosy.

- Give them lots of attention and plenty of cuddles as rabbits are very sociable animals.

- The RSPCA is happy to reimburse you for any pre-agreed expenses incurred through volunteering  for us.

What we are looking for in a volunteer Rabbit Fosterer

- Volunteers aged 18 or over who have had plenty of experience of caring for animals.

- Fostering experience is beneficial but not essential as training is provided.

- For their wellbeing, our rabbits may need to be fostered in pairs, so please bear this in mind.

- Any existing pets or animals need to have been spayed/neutered (some medical reasons may mean they can’t be so, please let us know if this is the case).

As a dog fosterer, you would be supporting the RSPCA in providing our dogs with the safety of your home whilst tending to their welfare needs such as feeding and grooming. In addition to this, by providing a temporary loving environment, you will play a crucial role in a dog’s wellbeing and socialisation, which will significantly improve their chances of successful rehoming.

Once everything is in place, the animal centre will guide you through the fostering process and ensure that you have all the necessary equipment, food, and veterinary care for your fostered dog. The RSPCA is also happy to reimburse any other pre-agreed expenses that you may incur through volunteering for us.

Whilst our dogs are in your foster care, you will:

-       Provide them with care, suitable housing, and a safe environment as per our policies and guidelines.

- Feed, water, and groom them in line with our advice.

- Transport them to any veterinary appointments if required.

- Provide them with your time and patience.

- Help us spread the word about the dogs in your care so they might find their forever home quicker.

- Playing and cuddles are also a must as well as a comfy bed!

We are looking for a team player, who is able to support our board to grow the charity over the next few years. Our aim is to break down barriers which prevent people accessing the arts – as well as enriching our community with our workshops, community events and gallery space. We are a passionate and dedicated team in need of support embedding new procedures, strategies and development plans to help the charity grow. We welcome hand-on trustees who wish to come and help at workshops and events, but this is not expected or a requirement of the role.

If you have a background in any of the following it would be very useful for our board: charity experience, marketing and communications, human resources, inclusion and diversity and/or finance. Previous trustee experience is not necessary and we are actively seeking applications from all ages and backgrounds. Having a board with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences will enable SCIP to improve decision making to be more inclusive whilst having better understandings of potential barriers people have experience accessing arts.  SCIP are focused on working with people who share our vision and values.

Southend Lifeboat Station has a busy and very active fundraising team who work closely with the lifeboat crew and operational teams to fundraise to support the vital work carried out on the coast around Southend. We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, drive and ideally experience in leading a team to take on the vital Chair role, and to drive income forwards. 

You will act as the key contact for the team, working with central RNLI teams to help to develop the group. This will be part of your role going forward! The Volunteer Engagement Lead at Barawak is central to harnessing the passion and skills of our community members, facilitating their contributions to our mission. This role entails strategising volunteer recruitment, ensuring effective onboarding, training and management of volunteers, and aligning volunteer efforts with the goals of Barawak's various service lines. 

Key Responsibilities:

1. Volunteer Strategy and Recruitment:

• Develop a robust volunteer recruitment strategy that aligns with Barawak’s overall mission and the specific needs of its service lines.

• Actively promote volunteer opportunities, reaching out to community members and using various platforms to attract a diverse volunteer base.

2. Onboarding, Training and Development:

• Implement a comprehensive training programme for volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared to support the initiatives of Barawak.

• Create materials and conduct training sessions that equip volunteers with the necessary knowledge and skills for their respective roles.

3. Support to Trustees:

• Work with trustees to understand volunteer requirements at the strategic level, and report on volunteer engagement activities and their impact.

• Provide trustees with insights into volunteer contributions towards Barawak’s objectives.

4. Programme-Specific Support:

• Collaborate with each programme lead to customise volunteer support according to the distinct demands and activities of their service lines.

• Ensure a smooth integration of volunteers into programme operations, matching volunteer skills with the tasks at hand.

5. Volunteer Management:

• Oversee the day-to-day management of volunteers, including scheduling, task assignment, and support.

• Foster a positive volunteer culture that encourages retention and recognises the valuable contributions of volunteers.

6. Evaluation and Feedback:

• Establish metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer engagement strategy and the satisfaction of volunteers.

• Gather feedback from volunteers and programme leads to continuously improve the volunteer experience and the impact of their work.

7. Community Liaison:

• Act as the primary liaison between Barawak and its volunteers, cultivating a strong community connection.

• Organise community events and recognition programs to honor and thank volunteers for their dedication.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Proven experience in volunteer coordination or community engagement.

• Strong organisational and leadership skills, with a talent for motivating and inspiring others.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.

• A passion for community service and a deep understanding of the Afro-Hebrew community's culture and values.
