The Family Bereavement sessions - What we do
We run sessions for bereaved families, offering three different age groups which are tailored around different developmental needs for 4-7-, 8-12- and 13–18-year-olds.
These Family Bereavement sessions currently have four components:
- An assessment with an allocated support worker to provide information and assess eligibility.
- An online parent information session for parent/carers to provide guidance and support in preparation for attendance at the bereavement session and to answer any questions or concerns.
- A social activity for families to meet and engage prior to the bereavement session.
- One Saturday Family Bereavement Session bringing families together (typically from 9am-3.30pm). These sessions will mostly be delivered as a family, with an hour in the afternoon where children and parents meet separately.
The Family Bereavement Sessions currently take place in Reigate but could be run from other locations in our catchment area across Surrey, parts of West Sussex and Kent.
The Social Event will be at a convenient location for the participating families which will be agreed with them. This is usually held on a Tuesday or Wednesday after school for the 8-12 and 13-18 groups and on a Saturday for the 4–7-year-olds.
How we ask you to help with groups:
We ask that volunteers can commit to the following aspects of the family bereavement session delivery – online session, social activity and Family Bereavement Session.
During delivery, you will be required to assist the Support Workers in the delivery of the activities and to support the children, young people and parents/carers to engage. Various activities are run at the family bereavement sessions - such as making salt jars, memory boxes and other craft activities, etc.
Additionally, volunteers would be expected to serve teas and coffees, wash up and support the setting up and delivery of the activities.,
Social events- What we do
We provide different social events and activities throughout the year to help bring children and young people in a similar situation together. This helps bereaved families and those facing the death of a loved one to have an opportunity to connect as a family and create special memories.
It also allows children and young people to know that they are not alone and to meet with others who are grieving or facing the death of a loved one. Research shows that social connections and social support is important for health and well-being.
How we ask you to help with social events:
To help the Support Workers in the delivery of the events and to connect and engage with children, young people and their families in attendance.
Training – before supporting families
We will provide you with all of the information and training you need and you will join a vibrant and committed group of volunteers ensuring that children and young people across our communities will not be alone during their bereavement journey.
Jigsaw South East is committed to the wellbeing of our volunteers and we will provide you with the information and support you need to fulfil your volunteering role. You will have a named member of staff as a central point of contact, access to supervision where relevant and the opportunity to meet other Jigsaw South East volunteers on, at least, a quarterly basis.
We provide our group volunteers with some comprehensive training to prepare them for the role – but it is worth noting, volunteers are always working alongside professional Support Workers at the groups and are not expected to ‘go it alone’.

The new role of Community Engagement Volunteer (CEV) will be at the centre of Jigsaw South East’s plans for the future.
We want to ensure that we increase our reach across our recently defined catchment and are able to support the children, young people and families who need our vital support.
The role of CEV will therefore assist with the following key areas:
- Presenting to schools, businesses and organisations across our local communities about our work and how we raise funds;
- Building recognition and awareness of our name and what we do;
- Assisting our Support Team to engage with Community Palliative Teams, Clinical Nurse Specialist Teams (particularly Cancer and Neurological Teams) and GP Surgeries to help us increase referrals to our service;
- Engaging with disadvantaged communities across our catchment who may be currently unaware of our support - we would like to focus on two areas (Crawley and Woking) and look to role out and recruit for other areas our service covers in the future (dependent on funding).
Training

Go Beyond are a national UK charity giving children who have been bereaved, abused or bullied, who are living in poverty or caring for loved ones the chance to escape their worries and pressures through free breaks in the countryside. We need volunteers to help us deliver fun, creative and adventurous activities throughout the year.
Go Beyond’s centres on the Cornish coastline and on the edge of the Peak District are where vulnerable young people facing various challenges in their life come for a week of freedom and fun. Running Monday-Friday throughout the year, our breaks give children and young people the chance for time away from the worries of their everyday life, to make friends, try new things, build confidence, and ultimately go home inspired by what the world can offer them and what they, in turn, can offer the world.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a breaks volunteer, you will be part of a team, including trained Break Leaders, and will support by being an extra pair of eyes and ears, and a helping hand where needed. You will spend time with the young people attending Go Beyond and help ensure they have a positive week full of experiences and memories that will last a lifetime!
Full training and support will be given throughout. We have a wide variety of volunteer roles available and key responsibilities can include:
- Helping the Break Leaders with day-to-day tasks, such as setting up activities and keeping the centre tidy
- Assisting at mealtimes with preparing, serving, and cleaning
- Leading planned activities based on your skills with support from Break Leaders (such as baking, sports games, gardening, arts and crafts etc.)
- Capturing photos of special moments for the young people (using Go Beyond cameras only)
- Accompanying our driver to collect or drop off groups and supervise behaviour on the buses
- To be a positive role model and lead by example at all times
- To be encouraging and supportive to the young people and take an interest in each child
- To take part in the activities alongside the young people
- To be aware of boundaries and know when it is important to enforce these
- To inform the Break Leaders of any issues or concerns you have relating to the young people or the break experience
- To contribute to personalised messages which the young people receive in their goody bags as a lasting memory of their Go Beyond break
- To read, sign and ensure Safeguarding and Health and Safety Policies and Reporting Procedures are followed, and contribute to Go Beyond Hazard Analysis Critical Control Principles, Risk Assessment and Quality Assurance processes.

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are committed to preventing sexual abuse to form circles in the West Midlands area. Circles reflect the communities they work in and we welcome volunteers from all kinds of backgrounds.
About you
- You must be over the age of 18
- We will support you to apply for an Enhanced DBS check. There are some convictions which would preclude you from volunteering so; please speak to the Circles Coordinator for more information
- We will provide training before you start volunteering, which usually takes place over 2 weekend days or 4 evenings.
Volunteer, and you won’t just do something amazing to prevent sexual abuse, but you will also develop your skills. Our volunteers are also eligible for volunteer discounts, covering everything from fashion, holidays, meals out and gym membership.
What are Circles of Support and Accountability
Circles of Support and Accountability aim to rehabilitate people who have committed sexual offences against children, and help them to not offend again.
Each circle includes 4 to 6 trained volunteers from the local community who help to support one person who has sexually offended. The volunteers commit to meeting with the core member for 12 to 18 months.
The circle provides practical skills and support to the Core Member according to their needs, which might include social skills, finding work or hobbies, or looking for suitable accommodation. They will also receive disclosure about the core members offending behaviour, and support them to recognise unhelpful thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviour which might link to their risk of offending, and encourage them to develop more healthy strategies.
The core member will be subject to probation oversight within the criminal justice system. Volunteers are supported by a professional Circle Coordinator, who liaises with other key professionals working with the core member, including police and probation.

Taking place on Friday 7th June , Childhood Day is the NSPCC’s national flagship day of fundraising and action that brings communities together and gives everyone a way to help keep children safe. Are you with us?
Childhood Day collections will be taking place across the UK from 25 May – 16 June. We have a number of collections across the South West of England that we need volunteers for.

Take to the streets with us across the UK this May and June and help us collect donations for the NSPCC.
