Job description

We are looking for adventurous individuals to take a front line role in delivering the legendary Sierra Leone Marathon 2020!

Location: Sierra Leone

Dates: March - June 2020

Duration: 6-10 weeks (negotiable)

Marathon Week: 20th - 26th May

THE ROLE

The Sierra Leone Marathon is not just a one-day affair, but a five day adventure through Sierra Leone. Successful applicants will join a team of volunteers, the Race Director and Street Child staff to coordinate the marathon and a 5 day trip of project visits for the international runners to see the work we do. This role is focused on the operational aspects of the event, including accommodation, transport and marathon-day logistics.

This role is guaranteed to be busy and varied, and is a great opportunity to offer real value to the team whilst gaining valuable experience in project management, event planning and International Development. There is also the opportunity to shape your own experience according to your skills, knowledge and goals.

Working alongside the Street Child team, your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and managing the operations for the Sierra Leone Marathon trip, including accommodation, transport and project visits

  • Scoping Street Child’s projects to plan and arrange marathon-week project visits with the local communities

  • Approaching & working with key local stakeholders

  • Proactively supporting the recruitment of international and local participants

  • Assisting in the delivery of the “world’s most worthwhile marathon” at the end of May 2020, making sure the 150 international participants have a life changing and memorable experience.

A fundraising commitment is also required of successful applicants, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK. Participants will also be invited to an Information Evening in London with a senior member of our Programmes Team & the Head of Fundraising.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Highly self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work as part of a team

  • Experience in logistics and event coordination

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to plan and implement plans in a structured manner

  • Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance

  • Ability to be flexible and to work outside of your specific duties when needed, have fun and laugh along with a sometimes unpredictable environment!

  • An eagerness to contribute to and learn more about International Development.

TERMS
The successful applicant must be prepared to live in very basic conditions and to travel independently around Sierra Leone. Food, accommodation and flights are at the applicant’s own expense. A more detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for an interview. A fundraising commitment is also required.

Whilst this is initially a voluntary role, for applicants with relevant experience able to prove their ability to add strategic value, there is the distinct possibility of attaining a more permanent position: almost all the charity’s paid staff began as interns or on a pro bono basis.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Successful applicants will be invited to interview over the phone or in our London office. This is also a chance to hear more about the placement.
