Job description

Could YOU lead this Garden to a secure future?

The Painswick Rococo Garden is a 10-acre historical garden designed and created in the mid 1740s.  It is a unique survivor of a fascinating, flamboyant and sensual period of English garden design.

The Board of Trustees is looking for a new Chair to lead us through the next crucial phase of the Garden’s development and restoration.  Our key medium-term aims are to promote the Garden as a national venue and to provide a new visitor centre to replace the current building when the lease expires in 2022. We believe these are essential if this beautiful and much-loved place is to remain open to the public in the long term.

It’s an exciting time for the Garden. The board has an energetic and committed group of Trustees, supported by a capable and professional staff team.  Our aims are high.  You will be joining a very active organisation and playing a key role in our future.

The Role

1. Leading the Boards of the Trust and its Trading Company

  • Providing team leadership to the Board of Trustees and Directors of Painswick Garden Estate Ltd, both in and out of committee;
  • In meetings, ensuring all voices are heard, discussion is kept to the point and concluded in a timely manner, and summing up clearly for the minutes;
  • Checking minutes for accuracy before they are released;
  • Overseeing the recruitment of new Trustees and Directors;
  • Leading the Strategic Planning for the Rococo Garden.

2.  Representing the Rococo Garden

The Chair acts a figurehead for the Trust, articulates our vision for internal and external stakeholders, gives pep talks at staff parties, meets important business partners and donors.

The Chair should work to ensure a good relationship between the Board and

  • the staff and volunteers;
  • our external stakeholders;
  • the local community.

3. Line Manager to the Garden Director

The Garden Director is the senior member of the professional staff and responsible for the day to day running of the Garden. The role of the Chair is to:

  • Agree with the Garden Director’s his objectives for the coming year.  These should be reflected in the Business Plan.
  • Beavailable for one-to-ones with the Garden Director on a semi-regular basis, covering pastoral as well as operational matters. 
  • Conduct the Garden Director’s annual appraisal.
  • Be available if necessary to help resolve any high-level staff issues that may rise between the Garden Director and the staff reporting immediately to him.   

Required Qualities

  • A willingness to lead the Trust and Trading Company;
  • Experience of Leadership roles;
  • Tact, diplomacy and powers of persuasion;
  • An understanding of and sympathy with the history, vision and circumstances of the Rococo Garden.

Time Commitment

The Trustee Board meets monthly for up to two hours at a time.  The PGEL Directors meet quarterly and their meetings are usually shorter.  Most Trustees also take on extra responsibilities outside of the meeting cycle according to their skills, availability and experience.  This is particularly so for the Chair, who is likely to be consulted regularly on matters of both procedure and substance, and who will need to make time for regular meetings with the Garden Director, on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.
