ROLE SUMMARY 

Trustees play a crucial and key role in the setting up of Youth Mix, the strategic direction and steering of our new youth charity, ensuring we are a fantastic youth-led organisation for young people aged 16 to 26 years old. Trustees will also ensure quality, stability and positive outcomes for both young people and our new charity as we set up and start our journey.

This is an exciting time for the Charity as we roll out our mentoring programme. Following strategic discussions, we are now looking to reinforce and enrich our Trustee Board to provide support and guidance to our Operational Team to enable them to achieve our ambitious 1 year and 3-year plans, whilst also ensuring robust succession plans in place for the Board.

To that end, we are looking to appoint a trustee with experience in social media management and marketing to help develop and implement our social media strategy and expand and engage our followers.

We are particularly enthusiastic about fostering inclusivity within our Board. We actively encourage applications from ethnic minorities, young individuals seeking their inaugural board appointment (especially those aged between 18 & 26), and individuals of all ages with a commitment to empowering young people, including those aged 55 and above.

The Green House Bristol is looking for a new Treasurer to join our Trustee board. As Treasurer you will maintain an overview of The Green House’s financial affairs. 

Overview of the role 

3 in 20 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. Yet, with access to the right help, children and their families can heal and recover. The Green House offers this lifeline, delivering the only specialist service to children, young people and families who have experienced sexual abuse living in Avon and Somerset. 

We are currently recruiting for a new Treasurer to join our Trustee board. As a Trustee of The Green House, you will play a crucial role in setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring good governance. You will contribute to ensuring that the charity fulfils its mission, operates effectively, and remains accountable to survivors of child sexual abuse, and their families.

In addition to the general duties as Trustee, as Treasurer you will ensure that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls, and procedures are put in place and report to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation. 

Please note that you will also be appointed as a Director of The Green House, reflecting our registration as both a charity and a Private Limited Company.

About you 

We are seeking a finance professional. You do not need to have specific knowledge of charity finance, although this would be an advantage. You do not need to have previous experience of acting as a Trustee. We are looking for you to demonstrate:

• Advocacy: A willingness to represent the charity and advocate on The Green House’s behalf. 

• Communication: The ability for you to communicate your area of specialism to other members of the board with different specialist knowledge. 

• Time Commitment: The ability to consistently devote time to the role.

Duties of all Trustees 

• Prepare for and attend Board meetings, using your skills, expertise and knowledge to contribute to discussions. 

• Participate in setting the charity’s strategic direction. Contribute to decision-making on key matters, including long-term planning, financial sustainability, and program development. 

• Provide support, learning and challenge to The Green House’s CEO. 

• Ensure The Green House acts in line with its governing document and complies with all relevant laws and regulations. 

• Ensure the charity lives its values (hope, creativity, and connection), delivering accountability to children who have experienced sexual abuse and their families. 

• Monitor operational progress against The Green House’s new strategy. 

• Ensure the charities financial and wider resources are being used effectively and treated with care. 

• Ensure all relevant policies and procedures are in place and are being implemented. 

• Ensure that key risks are being identified, monitored, and controlled effectively. 

• Use independent judgment, acting legally and in good faith to promote and protect The Green House’s interests, to the exclusion of your own personal and/or any third-party interests. 

• Proactively represent The Green House, building the charity’s visibility and reputation. 

Duties of the Treasurer 

• Oversee the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board of Trustees 

• Ensure that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.

• Ensure that robust and comprehensive financial policies and insurances are in place, are revised as and when required, and are being implemented.

• Monitor and advise on the financial viability of the charity.

• Oversee and develop financial controls and adherence to systems, regularly liaising with The Green House’s Business Development Manager and CEO. 

• Advise on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process and advising the Trustee Board representative and In-House Fundraising Team. 

• Ensure investments and assets are maximized. 

• Lead on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors. 

• Ensure that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies, including the Charity Commission and the Registrar of Companies. 

• Keep the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities and liaising with the Chief Executive to develop the financial understanding of the Board of Trustees. 

Terms of appointment 

Terms of office 

• Trustees are appointed for a three-year term of office, with renewal for two further terms to a maximum of three years. 

• This is a voluntary position, but all reasonable expenses are covered. 

Time commitment (Approximately 2-4 days a month) 

• Attend monthly Board meetings. These are typically held on a Thursday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual although we do meet in-person on a quarterly basis. 

• Attend monthly Finance and Resources Meetings (max 1hr 30). These are typically held on a Monday evening at 6pm. Most meetings are virtual. Ensuring that there is sufficient time within the month to work with the Business Development Manager to oversee and contribute to any actions relating to the Trustee Board and the role of the Treasurer (1.5 days per month). 

• Additional time is needed to take ownership of actions that arise from meetings (from supporting with recruitment and exit interviews where appropriate, to attending events on The Green House’s behalf). You will also need to be flexible in responding to emergent time-urgent issues when they arise. 

• We also ask Trustees to attend an initial induction day at The Green House, The Green House’s annual Festival of Activism against Child Sexual Abuse (1 day in early February) and spend a strategy day with the staff team (typically 1 day September). From time to time, depending on the nature of the Fundraising activity it may be necessary for Trustee’s to attend fundraising events/meetings with the CEO.

• Plan and chair monthly board meetings.

Main Responsibilities and Duties

• Ensure that SEED and its representatives function within all legal and regulatory frameworks continually striving for best practice in governance.

· Comply with SEED’s Code of Conduct and policies, providing leadership on its value base and organisational behaviour, including safeguarding, human resources and financial management.

· Work alongside fellow Trustees and the Senior Management Team in developing SEED’s strategic direction, promoting and developing this through good governance and clear strategic planning. To evaluate progress made towards achieving the strategic objectives.

• Ensure that SEED operates within its Charitable Objectives and organisational strategy in order that its work remains focussed and makes the greatest impact to those it serves.

• Actively contribute to the development of SEED’s business plan, monitoring and evaluating performance against agreed objectives.

• Prepare for and participate fully in board meetings reviewing all reports coming to these meetings.

• To undertake training when required.

• Use any specific skills, knowledge or experience to help the Board of Trustees reach quick and sound decisions and participate in sub-committees.

· Support the recruitment of senior staff and offer on-going support and monitoring of their work.

· Assist in the recruitment, on-boarding and support of new Trustees when required.

· Act reasonably in decision making and leadership of the organisation and manage risks with a considered, proportionate and balanced approach.

· Maintain sound financial management of SEED’s resources, ensuring expenditure is in line with the organisations’ objects and that assets are protected and managed to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.

· Act as a counter-signatory on charity cheques and any applications for funds.

· Ensure the effective and efficient administration of SEED including having appropriate policies and procedures in place. These policies and procedures are reviewed and signed off by the Trustee Board.

· Ensure that SEED has robust safeguarding policy and procedures in place and that safeguarding is embedded across the organisation

· Safeguard the good name and reputation of SEED, acting in the best interest of the charity, staff and beneficiaries at all times.

· Promote the work of SEED externally seeking opportunities that might further the work and visibility of the Charity.

·  Support the Managing Director in leading the Charity, providing advice and practical help and participating in their annual evaluation.

· Maintain absolute confidentiality about all sensitive or confidential information received through carrying out the duties of a Trustee.

· Remain open and accessible to SEED’s staff through occasional communication and site visits.

Accountability:

As a Trustee you are responsible and liable for the governance and functioning of the charity and are accountable in varying degrees to a variety of stakeholders including: service users, members, funders, the Charity Commission, and Companies House.

SEED Trustees should uphold the fiduciary duty required of all charity trustees to act in the best interests of both current and future beneficiaries of the charity, being held personally liable for any breach of that duty.

Support regarding this is given by fellow Trustees, the Managing Director and the Senior Management team.

Required skills & experience:

The successful applicant will:

• Demonstrate a passion for and sound knowledge of development and/or conservation issues facing least developed countries such as Madagascar.

• Demonstrate sound knowledge and keen interest in at least one of SEED’s core areas (community health; sustainable livelihoods; environmental conservation) or in a key functional area (management, finance, marketing).

• Have a reasonable level of understanding of legal, financial, audit and other regulatory requirements of a charity, ideally through experience as a trustee.

• Show commitment to SEED and have sufficient time and willingness to contribute effectively to board proceedings and sub committee work.

• Be able to make quick and sound decisions based on an analysis of information presented to them.

• Have the confidence to both advocate for or challenge ideas and can remain independent of any influence from other organisations or individuals.

• Be able to work effectively as a member of a team and independently.

• Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to SEED’s Code of Conduct and values and be a good ambassador for the organisation at all times.

• Demonstrate the ability, social skills and confidence to give clear guidance and support to other Trustees or members of staff in respect of the philosophy and procedures of SEED in order to protect the reputation of the NGO.

• Be able to work to and advocate for all of SEED’s policies and procedures, working within SEED’s Code of Conduct, safeguarding those that SEED works with and reporting any concerns appropriately.

• Have empathy with those living and working in a developing country with the ability and desire to work with teams from different economic and cultural backgrounds.

• Have excellent listening and verbal communication skills and a flexible and patient attitude.

Who we are:

Village Service Trust is a small volunteer-run charity supporting partner organisations in Tamil Nadu, south India. Since our founding in 1976 we have worked with a number of incredibly impactful partners mostly in Theni District. We have worked with some of our partners for decades and we focus on small but stable long-term financial support. Our partners seek to improve livelihoods and social justice through rights-based programmes with rural women, Dalit children and tribal people. Our priority areas have evolved over time to reflect the most pressing challenges our partners see on the ground in the communities they work in.

The role:

This is an unpaid role. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.

We are looking for up to three Trustees to join our small friendly charity board. Trustees volunteer their time to govern the charity in compliance with the law. Trustees ensure that our charity work is always being conducted for public benefit, our resources are managed responsibly, and that we are always holding ourselves accountable to our regulators, supporters and beneficiaries.

We hold meetings every three months, usually remotely but with the occasional in-person gathering and at a minimum a commitment to prepare for and attend most meetings is required.

As an organisation reliant on voluntary efforts by our Trustees and occasional volunteers we would also welcome additional support, particularly in the areas outlined below. Deeper involvement in the work of the trust is greatly appreciated.

St. Luke's Hospice is here for our local community when and where they need us. As a Hospice we provide compassionate care and work to ensure equity of access to those in the communities we support, whose illnesses are no longer curable.

Our care ensures dignity and empowers people to make the choices they want from the moment they are diagnosed. We provide support from our two Hospices (Basildon and Thurrock) as well as out in the community at a person’s place of residence, when needed. Our team is made up of various health and social care professionals, many of whom work with us on a voluntary basis.

Our organisation is going through an important and exciting period of transformational change, and we are looking to recruit new Trustees to be part of this on a voluntary basis and to help diversify skills and lived experiences that our Board has.

Our Board are collectively responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity working with the Chief Executive and Executive Team.

Role Details

• Salary: The role is unremunerated, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
• Contract: Trustees are appointed to the Board which is renewable annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
• Time Commitment: There will usually be up to eleven meetings a year at 4-6 week intervals. Meetings are currently scheduled for Wednesdays and last for 2 hours. Board members are expected to attend at least eight meetings a year and actively contribute to discussions.
• Location: St. Luke's Hospice, Basildon and possible hybrid arrangements available.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with fellow Trustees and the Executive Team, to set and review strategic goals.
• Ensuring the hospice complies with its governing document, charity law, and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

The Pirate Castle is looking for a Treasurer.  We are an iconic Camden-based community boating charity, established for 55 years.  Our well-known castle building sits on the banks of the Regent's Canal.  We rent out our community space and offer a range of watersports.  Kayaking and canal boating are core to our work and we strive to tackle disadvantage and support our community by offering subsidised sport and recreation.  The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fiancial analysis or accounting, ideally with a professional accountancy qualification.  Previous experience in a Treasurer role would be an advantage.

The role involves working with our employed General Manager and contracted Bookkeeper to monitor and oversee the charity's financies and to report to trustees.  It also involves overseeing the preparation of the annual accounts, working with our retained accountancy firm. 

The charity is in a sound financial position.  As the Treasurer youwill also be involved in the charity's strategic manageent and governance.  We are a friendly board and staff team, looking for a Treasurer with good communication skills.   You can expect about five hours work per month.

Portsmouth Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Sea, becomes a registered charity in March 2024 under the Cathedrals Measure 2021. The Measure brings cathedrals under Charity Commission regulation and strengthens governance and operational frameworks. One of the aims  is that the membership of Chapter, the Trustee body, should bring together individuals with a broad range of skills, knowledge, expertise, and experience to bring in best practice of strategic leadership for the Cathedral and lead it in being transparent and accountable. 

We are looking to recruit members to the new Nominations Committee, which is chaired by Sir David Normington, and will advise on the recruitment of non-executive members of the new Chapter along with other Chapter Committees.  

 We are particularly looking for people who are:

• interested in, and supportive of, the work of the Cathedral; are collaborative and team oriented;
• have experience of serving on a committee or board in their working lives or as a volunteer; and have

What will you be doing?

We are currently looking for two new Trustees. Our Trustees are like a non-executive board of directors - although they are not involved in the day-to-day running of the charity, they oversee what we do and make sure we stay on track, meeting 4 times per year in Accrington or via Teams for up to 2 hours at a time. In between meetings, the charity's management and admin team might call on the trustees for particular issues with which they need help or support, such as proofreading funding applications, working on developing specific projects using a trustee's contacts or area of expertise, or simply when a sounding board for new ideas is needed.

Our trustees may also come to our events a few times a year to keep up with what we are doing - this is arranged as convenient for the trustees.

New trustees will be joining our board, which currently stands at 5. The only absolute requirements are that you are interested in and enthusiastic about what we do and that you are willing to work to support the charity using any skills, knowledge, or contacts that you have that may be relevant.

The RYC is going through a rough time at the moment as we respond to increased demand and reduced funding.Your presence and work on our Board of Trustees could help us reach hundreds of children and young people across the North-West who are the most vulnerable in our society. Living with issues such as eating disorders, anxiety, self-harm or suicidal tendencies, these young people are forgotten by mainstream clubs, therefore missing out on the social benefits of having friends or a safe space to connect or ask for help, especially in the wake of COVID-19 and the cost-of-living crisis.

The Board of Trustees has ultimate responsibility for the sound governance of the organisation.

Specifically its role is:
● To agree overall direction and strategic plans, and to monitor, at a summary level, progress
against these
● To oversee the finances - to ensure they are being well managed and we are in sound financial
health
● Specifically to take particular interest in our fundraising strategy and performance
● To oversee our compliance with all legislation, e.g. on Child Safeguarding or Health and Safety as
well as with Charity Commission regulations
● To monitor strategic risks and ensure we have suitable mitigations in place

The trustees meet formally for a Trustee meeting about once a quarter, usually for 2.5 hours after the
normal working day. Each trustee is expected to play their part as a member of the Board, providing
challenge and support to the executive team as required.

Specific responsibilities include:
● Preparing for and attending trustee meetings
● From time to time and as appropriate, attending other Grounded Sounds events (e.g. end of
project showcase events, House Band performances, advisory board meetings) in order to gain a
greater understanding of the workings of the charity
● Communication with the Exec or other trustees in between meetings, as needed, in relation to
music industry connections, fundraising or other issues requiring input.

Faith in Action Merton Homelessness Project (FiA)

Our mission is to help and support homeless and vulnerably-housed people in and around the London Borough of Merton. We operate a twice-weekly Drop-in, currently welcoming 50-60 individuals each day, while our Winter Night Shelter provides a warm, dry place to sleep every night during the coldest nights of the year – this winter from 4 December until 10 March 2024.

Our current Finance Director Trustee is retiring, having completed the maximum of nine years in the role. We’re now looking for an enthusiastic and committed volunteer for the role which covers the following positions:

1. Finance Director and Trustee
2. Bookkeeper

The current incumbent fulfils both roles but we would consider splitting the responsibilities if two complementary applications were received.

Finance Director (FD) and Trustee

This role includes joining the current team of Trustees, who together have overall responsibility for the successful running of the Charity.

Key responsibilities of the FD are:

● Overall responsibility for the finances and accounting of the charity

● Overseeing the preparation and presentation to the Board of Trustees of: Five-year business plan; Annual budget; Monthly P&L and cash account compared to budget; Outturn forecast if/when necessary; Annual accounts

● Work with the Company Secretary and Chair to prepare and present the Annual Report

● Oversee financial management and operations, and manage internal financial controls, ensuring that we adhere to Charity Commission guidelines at all times

● Liaison with FiA’s auditors

● Being a bank signatory

● Oversee all business relationships/contracts to ensure best value

● Report on financial matters to Trustees and make recommendations as necessary

● Attend Trustee meetings (usually around 10 pa),

● Recommend pay rises and annual bonuses for FiA’s team of eight staff

● Authorise payments up to £1,000 (note: payments above £1,000 should be referred to the Trustees) Estimated time commitment: 6-10 hours per month

Bookkeeper

Key responsibilities are:

● Maintaining an up-to-date cash account and summarising the position monthly for preparation of reports

● Prepare monthly bank reconciliations

● Accounting for Gift Aid and submitting payment applications to HMRC

● Overseeing the management of the payroll and submission of documentation to HMRC, and any stakeholder pension arrangements (note: the payroll is managed on a bureau basis by Wimbledon Guild)

● Payment of regular bills

● Authorise payments up to £500 (note: manager to sign off payments up to £200) Estimated time commitment: 8-10 hours per month.
