Interested in volunteering with Cumbria Wildlife Trust on the ‘The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery’ project? The Bay is a nature and wellbeing programme of events, offering people living around Morecambe Bay area, the opportunity to get outdoors, connect with nature, and take part in a range of activities. Barrow-in-Furness is at the northernmost point of the Bay project area.

Do you love wildlife? Experience and share the joy of the rich variety of habitats and wild plants and animals that live in The Bay, with event visitors.

Becoming a community events volunteer, is a unique opportunity to learn new conservation and people skills. Community event volunteers help to connect people to nature and also help people take action to protect wildlife.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up and support the delivery of events which may include coastal stargazing, UV rock pooling, guided walks, codebreaking, egg case hunts, and craft activities. We also go into organisations such as care homes with our ‘portable rockpool’ to bring a little bit of nature to people who would struggle to get outdoors.

You don’t need to be a wading bird or starfish expert, just have a natural enthusiasm for the all the wildlife that you and event visitors will encounter.

This community focused role is based indoors or outdoors.

This is a very flexible role.

You can choose the events you’d like to help with.

Training, hot brews and support will be provided.

Travel costs will be reimbursed and lift sharing can often be arranged on request.

 Please note DBS (paid by Cumbria Wildlife Trust) may be required. Safeguarding training will also be provided.

Finance Director

Road Farm Countryways CIC is looking for a Director/Trustee to join the existing leadership team of 5. This important role will ensure the efficient delivery of wellbeing and skills to a wide community of ages, including those with learning, physical and mental health challenges. We are keen to encompass diversity and we would find it especially beneficial to have someone experienced in health and disability or social care. We’re entering our 10th Year and have a new Business Plan to deliver. 

What will you be doing?

Road Farm Countryways CIC is looking for another Director /Trustee to join the existing leadership team. We normally have 4-5 voluntary Directors and have an additional group of volunteers more involved with our regular farm helpers on a daily basis.

This vital role includes:

• Improving the quality and sustainability of Countryway’s Care Farming service to people with disabilities.
• Developing and promoting new initiatives, especially considering online options and social media.
• Promoting Care Farming and education opportunities here, incorporating life skills, especially for those transitioning to adulthood.
• Networking with other organisations and sectors in society (e.g. local authorities, health and social care agencies, educational institutions, businesses, other voluntary organisations)
• Developing opportunities to address mental health problems and anxiety amongst families and individuals, especially following the impact of Covid-19

Where and how?

• Flexible hours, but we tend to have a monthly meeting of up to 2 hours (which can be held remotely) with additional communication by phone or email as necessary.
• Own Transport is preferable as there is no direct public transport to the farm. Reasonable out of pocket expenses can be met and some training provided.
• A DBS check may be required.

What difference will you make?

Having worked with young adults with learning difficulties for the past 10 years, we have now improved our facilities and can include physically disabled people, those retired for health reasons, as well as provide space for addressing the mental health needs of many people impacted by anxiety or bereavement, especially through Covid-19. We can also provide more specific skills training to a range of ages, including school age, as well as environmental benefits and engagement with nature through wildlife and active conservation on the farm. 

These are critical growth points and your involvement will have direct impact on many, helping us have a clear focus and giving us the energy and man-power to deliver.  It will help people of all ages, with a range of needs, to learn new things and be able to interact more easily in an everyday environment, having a huge positive impact on their families and beyond.  Your help in guiding the organisation will enable people to learn new skills, feel included and better prepared to face the day ahead.  Bonus...we're excited and hope you will be too.

Objectives

Road Farm Countryways CIC is committed to enabling farm and countryside interaction to improve well-being, self-worth and promote learning, especially for those rarely able to access it. We work with people with many different life challenges and educational interests including those with learning difficulties, complex needs, physical and mental health problems, providing active Care Farming involvement with animals and learning life skills to help maintain our countryside.  Many of our farm helpers cannot cope in large social settings or corporate establishments, but here feel part of a real working environment and become more confident, capable of interaction, self-control and independence, amongst many other positive things. They know that here, they matter.  They develop greater independence and improved work and social skills as well as better physical health which impacts their whole wellbeing and indirectly influences their home and family setting for the better.

We also provide educational and special interest group visits, enabling people of all ages to actively learn more about farming and biodiversity interactions, helping develop a love of the outdoors and sustainability. There are opportunities to cook farm field to fork and get involved with crafts too, with an excellent wood-work shop to include all levels of skill.  Everyone can do something well and need to know they can, so we try to help this happen!

Activities

By interaction and care with animals (donkeys, goats, hens, turkeys, sheep, cattle etc) and maintaining the countryside (eg coppicing; woodland maintenance, work on bee-hives & bird boxes) in a beautiful, non-threatening place, our service users get involved, learn skills and feel a sense of purpose and inclusion. These can be one-off visits or structured programmes over many months or years with supported learning and reflection built in. All visits are strictly pre-arranged and vary according to individual needs.

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.

This fun and varied volunteer position requires great organisational skills, a passion for fundraising and animal welfare, creating input and multitasking As well as general computer skills and telephone skills.

You will be working closely with one of our volunteers, who produces the majority of our larger fundraising events as well as liaising with the wider team. The events will include musical concerts, theatre shows and community based fundraising events that will be run both online and in person. The locations of these events will be in all parts of the UK. You will be required to issue press releases, contact local radio and TV stations as well as help to organise and source prizes for the auction and Raffles. A basic knowledge of event planning and producing an event would be useful but this can be learnt within the role. Expect there to be periods leading up to the events where things are very busy but these will only be approximately 4 to 6 times a year. We currently require support with events in June, September and December. Moore may be added.

The role will require you to be present at the actual event you have helped to plan, being hands-on with everything from tickets on the door, helping to organise the raffle and looking after performers and special guests.

A bit about this role

Thousands of cats each year rely on the help of animal charities because they have been abandoned, they have strayed or because there has been a change in their owner’s circumstances. Becoming an administration volunteer is just one way you can help improve the lives of cats in your local community. Our admin volunteers help provide vital admin support to our volunteer groups and teams across Cats Protection. They help keep up to date records of the number of cats that have been rehomed, collate supporter details and send out newsletters. This could be the perfect volunteer role if you have administrative experience, a passion for cats, or both!

• Recording relevant information related to your volunteer group
• Signposting enquiries to the relevant teams within Cats Protection
• Sending information to supporters, volunteers and to our National Cat Centre
• Distributing information leaflets if required

Time expectation

Our administration volunteers usually spend 2 to 3 hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Support, guidance and keeping you safe

At Cats Protection we believe our volunteers should be happy and confident in their roles. We provide support and guidance from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

The wellbeing of our people is important and at Cats Protection we are committed to safeguarding children, adults at risk and all those that we come into contact with as part of our activities.

Across the UK, many cats are cared for by volunteer fosterers who provide a stable, safe and loving environment in their homes or in purpose-built pens in their gardens. They provide vital hands-on care and accommodation to stray or abandoned cats or cats whose owners could sadly no longer keep them, and are part of a dedicated team of volunteers committed to finding new homes for cats in need. Our fosterers carry out this role with support from their local branch or centre.

Most of our fosterers care for one or two cats at a time and enjoy providing lots of TLC to those cats, who have been pre-loved or have had a difficult start in life. Some of our fosterers look after new mums and kittens and provide round-the-clock care to newborns to give them the best start in life.

What can you expect to be doing?

• Meeting the needs of the cats and kittens in your care
• Cleaning and looking after the cats’ environment and equipment
• Feeding, grooming and administering medication
• Spending time enriching the cats’ experience in care including; play, exercise and stroking
• Maintaining high standards of animal welfare
