Check NowJubilee Gardens Trust, the local charity responsible for Jubilee Gardens on London’s South Bank, is looking for a volunteer Treasurer to join the Trustee board. Jubilee Gardens is one of the busiest greeen spaces in the country, with 7m-8m users each year pre-Covid, a turnover of c.£0.5m pa, and reserves of c.£1.5m. The board is made up of representatives of local resident organisations, local businesses and adjoining landowners including Shell and Southbank Centre.
Our new Treasurer is likely to be a qualified Accountant with an understanding of Charity SORP, to chair the Trust’s Finance Committee and to lead the Board’s duty to ensure proper accounting records are kept, financial resources are controlled and invested in line with governance, legal and regulatory requirements. The role is one of oversight, not day-to-day management – the Trust has a service contract which provides qualified staff to manage its financial affairs.
This is a volunteer role, though reasonable expenses can be reimbursed. The Board meets four times a year, and the Finance Committee six times a year, though the role will require some time outside these meetings. The Trust plays a significant role in the South Bank and Waterloo community and we believe that candidates would find the treasurer role interesting and rewarding. People from all backgrounds are welcomed – the Trust aspires to have a diverse board reflecting its users and communities.
The following would be desirable:
· A qualified Accountant/Treasurer - chartered level preferred
· Ideally with some experience of working in the charities sector - not essential
· Auditing and risk management skills and experience
· Good understanding of Charity SORP

What does a Trustee look like?
Look in the mirror...
Our Board needs a range of backgrounds, life-stages, experiences and skills who come together as a team to offer challenge and energy to one another, and to boost our ability to deliver for our ocean.
It’s a critical time for our ocean. There is not a moment to waste. Our goal is to recover the health of our ocean so it can help with healing our climate; to make seas protected in law protected in practice; and to stop the tide of plastic that’s getting into our waters.
By joining as a Trustee, you will add your voice to ours and help navigate us through the risks and opportunities that we meet.
We need 3 people to join our Boards with expertise in one or more of these areas:
-
Finance - An understanding of charity accounts and regulations would absolutely be an advantage, but a background in finance or perhaps as an auditor will provide a vital skill to help oversee our financial management.
-
Marine Conservation - You might have environmental knowledge, ideally on the marine environment, with policy and/or practical experience of conservation and specific knowledge for Scotland or Wales would be a bonus. A network of contacts across the marine sector, particularly with business, would be an advantage.
-
Engagement with our Volunteers - Experience of outreach programmes and citizen science projects with local communities. We want to reach new audiences to ensure a diverse and inclusive approach.
Right now, less than 3% of charity Trustees are under 30, 8% are people of colour and 36% are women. We recognise that that we should all have equal opportunity to take responsibility to protect our ocean for the future and if you are 18 and over, we want to hear from you.
What you can bring to our Board is more interesting than where you’ve been working. You can send a CV, but we don’t need you to, as you can set out your skills and motivation in a statement.
We value the knowledge and experiences that you will bring to the Marine Conservation Society, including those you’ve developed through employment, volunteering, through study, raising a family – all the aspects of you.
We understand that the application process can be difficult if you have a condition or disability that you live with. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to shine during your application process, so please let us know what we can do to accommodate you.
Send an email with your contact information included, but don’t put any personal information on any documents that you attach. For shortlisting, only your documents that set out your skills and experience are seen.

Woodland Heritage is looking for a new Chair to lead on its ambitious plans and grow its membership and influence
Woodland Heritage has grown steadily over the last 28 years since its inception by Peter Goodwin and Lewis Scott. A combination of new opportunities and rising aspirations means the charity is on the cusp of a step change in its mission to demonstrate the value of British woods.
Background
Woodland Heritage was founded by a passionate group of traditional cabinet makers who wanted to improve the way in which trees were grown, harvested and used in the UK. This small group of environmentally-minded producers was rapidly joined by furniture retailers, timber merchants, tree growers, individuals and colleges who shared concerns for our woodland environment. Woodlands are capable of growing high quality timber whilst providing an environment that supports people and wildlife but only if properly and continuously managed.
We are grateful for the support of a wide range of members, donations from benefactors and the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales.
Core activities
Woodland Heritage demonstrates the value of British woods through funding projects, providing grants and travel bursaries, supporting research and education, spreading the word through its highly successful Woodland to Workshop courses and Field Weekends and co-operating with like-minded organisations and initiatives.
Since 2009, Woodland Heritage has raised over £2.5m for research into Acute Oak Decline and currently employs two project staff in that area of work. The Charity is also one of eleven organisations on the Steering Committee of Action Oak, with Woodland Heritage the treasurer of the initiative's funds and the employer of its project manager. Funding for both 'AOD' and Action Oak looks strong to spring 2025 and maybe beyond.
Core trading activities
The charity owns Whitney Sawmills, a mill that demonstrates the processing and sale of timber, predominantly hardwood, the majority of which is grown and sourced locally. The mill is growing in profitability, impact and local employment. The charity is in the process of purchasing the site’s freehold. Profits from the mill fund the charity's activities. The Sawmill has its own board and management.
Core woodland activities
The Charity has also been offered a small, existing woodland and has recently purchased an 85 acre area of largely bare land that will be planted from 2022/23. This woodland is a key project for the charity to demonstrate a range of tree species and planting techniques that will demonstrate how to grow high value British woods.
We seek a chair who can
-
Commit to ensuring the good governance and growth of the charity, to include chairing the Trustees’ meetings (12 times per year) and more frequently liaising with the WH core team (two salaried posts).
-
Attend Woodland Heritage’s annual Field Weekend (three days usually held in June) to consolidate and enhance our relationships with new and existing members.
-
Undertake activities equivalent to c.2 days a month, principally involving growing Woodland Heritage’s profile and membership, including supporting fundraising activities.
-
Relate to WH’s vision and utilise their insight, contacts and experience to help deliver the Charity’s activities. This could involve membership activities, training and promotion, the management of woodland owned by WH and the linkages to and from Whitney Sawmills, Herefordshire (a trading subsidiary of the charity).
-
Engage the skills of dedicated staff and trustees in the finances and future success of the charity.
-
Help with the smooth succession planning of senior management in the charity and sawmill.
-
Appreciate that the satisfaction of delivering the Chair’s activities will be greater than any remuneration package – however approved expenses will be paid.
Timetable
Following the untimely death of Lewis Scott in November 2021, Simon Burvill, a long serving Trustee, took on the role of the chair for a 12 month period up to the end of 2022. The incoming chair will benefit from a handover period with Simon prior to starting in the role.
The post is for two years but could be extended.
How to apply
Please send an expression of interest of no more than 750 words to Guy Corbett Marshall (Chief Executive) stating why this role appeals and how and why you would be the ideal Chair.
You are also invited to submit your latest CV.
Expressions of interest with accompanying CV should be submitted before noon 31 May 2022.
It is expected that shortlisting will take place in week commencing 6 June 2022, with initial interviews to take place from 13 June 2022.

The Bumblebee Conservation Trust is looking for three Trustees to join our Board with expertise in the areas of either Communications & Engagement, Science & Conservation or Digital.
Trustees work well together, and with the executive team with a spirit of openness and trust. We recruit Trustees who support our drive for greater social inclusion, diversity and equity as we continue to grow in status and influence. We’re very proud of our inclusive culture at the Trust – we care as much about what you have the potential to do as what you have already done, and we want to hear how you will give us a better representation of those we are here to serve. We are keen to hear from people early in their careers as well as those well established.
With projects being delivered across England, Scotland and Wales we look to have Trustees based across these nations and so are particularly keen to receive applications from individuals based in Wales and Scotland.
The closing date for submitting your application is 23rd May 2022. Please see below for more information and details of how to apply.
Background
The Bumblebee Conservation Trust was established because of serious concerns about the 'plight of the bumblebee'. In the last 80 years, UK bumblebee populations have declined and two species have become nationally extinct. The Trust is a science-based charity, concerned with halting and reversing the decline in bumblebees.
The Trust’s vision is to increase the number and distribution of bumblebees. To achieve this, the Trust has an agreed strategy working toward four main aims:
1. Enhance the understanding of bumblebee ecology and conservation.
2. Increase the quality and quantity of bumblebee habitat.
3. Inspire and enable a diverse range of people to take action for bumblebees.
4. Be an effective and sustainable organisation.
Recruitment 2022
The current Board has ten members and we are seeking to recruit three Trustees to bring further skills and knowledge in in the areas of Communications & Engagement, Science & Conservation and Digital. This is a voluntary position but offers an exciting opportunity to assist a dynamic charity and develop its conservation and science work in the UK.
If you think that you have something to offer the Trust and share the Trust’s passion for saving bumblebees, please download the relevant recruitment pack for further information and application details. If you are interested in assisting in the governance of the Trust but are concerned about the time commitment involved (c1 day a month covering meetings and preparation time) please be in touch as we would also be open to co-opting non-Trustees as Committee advisory members.
Eligibility Criteria
Charity and company law and regulations place a number of eligibility criteria on trustees. To be eligible to be a trustee, you must be able to complete a formal declaration. The declaration required by the Charity Commission for England & Wales can be found here. The declaration required by OSCR for Scotland can be found here. Successful candidates must complete the relevant declarations before joining the Board.
Timetable
Trustees are elected to the Board at the Trust’s AGM, scheduled for November 2022. It is anticipated that short-listed candidates will be interviewed during June 2022. The successful candidate(s) will be co-opted onto the Board in September and seek formal election at the AGM in November 2022.

Right now, our world is going through a slow, steady period of destruction. But amidst this tragedy, we see the greatest outpouring of creative good in recent history. Through individual acts of goodwill and collective efforts of mutual aid, we’re seeing communities come together around the world. Of the moments of brightness that shine through the cracks of this dark time, Rebecca Solnit writes: “A disaster...changes the world and our view of it. Our focus shifts, and what matters shifts. What is weak breaks under new pressure, what is strong holds, and what was hidden emerges.” . To save humanity we need a new narrative, we need to activate humanity on a planetary scale and (re)connect with nature and each other.
We are building a live, persistent, 3D world that is available to anyone with a basic internet connection on any device, where user-created avatars can meet to see the world's greatest artists perform on a virtual stages and thus raise funds for, learn about and become invested in the ecosystem restoration projects of The United Nations DecadeOnRestoration(dot)org. Using the established Lost Horizon (Glastonbury Festival) online event production and building on that with the industry leaders of massive multiplayer (10,000 users per instance) Game as a service development, Improbable Games Studios, users will fund and learn about various restoration projects of The United Nations Decade’ official implementation partners; a space where we marry the movement of restoration with mainstream culture.
The World Exchange will host live music events with world class artists, where major acts support emerging players, where music & art drive attention and donations to environmental causes. It will be a meeting place where tribes form to follow the restoration projects they are crowdfunding together. The projects are tokenised and the offsets of each project recorded by satellite and AI. The project tokens and associated offsets can then be stored in the user’s World Wallet! Please see the project overview doc for more info. Think a modern day Live Aid in a virtual sense. Democratizing restoration through virtual (for now) live performance and character lead thematic education, saving the planet with the best parties in history.
