Share Community is seeking a Chair for our Board of Trustees, and up to three further Trustees to fill upcoming vacancies on our Board.
Role: Chair, Share Community
The Chair is a crucial role for Share, working closely with the Chief Executive to provide inspirational leadership, and ensure the charity delivers its mission and vision. Alongside all the other trustees the Chair will provide oversight of the Charity’s governance and strategic direction.
The Chair will be committed to reducing the social injustice faced by disabled people, and model Share’s organisational values: we’re inclusive, supportive and ambitious and work with kindness, integrity and respect.
The principal responsibilities of the Chair include:
- Leading the trustee body in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of Share Community;
- Working in partnership with the Chief Executive, Executive Team and other trustees to ensure the charity delivers on its strategic and charitable objectives, vision, purpose and values;
- Ensuring that the Board reviews strategic issues, risks and opportunities on a regular basis, and can satisfy itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks.
Share is seeking a leader with experience at Board level as either a Trustee or Executive Director. Previous experience as a Chair is not a requirement of the role.
Role: Trustee, Share Community
Share’s trustee team has responsibility for overseeing strategy and performance. Share currently has ten trustees, and in light of some current trustees coming to the end of their term, is looking to recruit three more with the enthusiasm, skills and commitment we need to help guide Share through the next phase of its development.
Prospective Trustees must have a commitment to Share’s vision and values, and a passion for making a difference in the lives of disabled people. Share is particularly keen to encourage applications from individuals with specific experience of:
- Fundraising, particularly growing or diversifying income streams;
- Property and estates management;
- Setting up or running a social enterprise.
Share is looking for people with or without Board level experience, and we would welcome applications from adults of all ages.
Representation
Share believes strongly that diversity of thought and experience directly contributes to better organisational outcomes, and that the composition of the Charity’s leadership should be reflective of the diversity of Share’s student body.
Share is therefore particularly keen to encourage applications for the Chair and Trustee roles from groups currently under-represented on the Board, including people who have lived experience of disability or caring for someone with a disability, those from minoritised ethnic backgrounds, and men.

Share is a charity based in Wandsworth and Lambeth, working with adults with learning disabilities and autism.
The story of Share began in 1972, when a group of disabled people came together as a self-help group to improve employment and training opportunities for disabled people. Over the years, Share has grown and evolved, responding to changing needs and opportunities.
Share appointed a new Chief Executive in 2022, and the Charity is in the second year of a three-year strategy. Delivery of our strategy will help Share achieve its mission of providing a safe, empowering and progressive experience where disabled adults can develop their skills, wellbeing and purpose to enable them to live happier, healthier and more independent lives.
Share principally supports people from south west London, with the majority of students coming from Wandsworth and Lambeth. Share currently operates from four sites and supports more than 160 students each week across our range of programmes which focus on personal development, independent living skills, and employability.

Role title: Chair of the Board of Trustees
Location: Flexible (travel to London will be required at least once a quarter)
Salary: N/A (Volunteer role)
Time commitment: 2-3 days per month
Contract: The Chair is appointed for an initial 3-year term with the option of renewal for up to 3 terms. The maximum term for all trustees (including the Chair) is 9 years.
Purpose of the role:

The Chair leads the board, ensuring that it governs Breaking Barriers effectively, in service of our vision and mission. The Chair leads in an inclusive way, supporting the board to work together well, and providing support and challenge to the Chief Executive. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity.
The Chair of Breaking Barriers provides visionary leadership and strategic direction, ensuring that the organisation effectively achieves its mission while adhering to its core values. This pivotal role involves governance oversight, board leadership, executive support, and serving as an ambassador for the organisation.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic leadership and vision: Guide the organisation with a strategic vision, aligning the board and staff's efforts with the mission. Lead the development and review of long-term strategies to ensure responsiveness to community needs and adaptability to the changing environment.
- Governance and oversight: Ensure effective governance, oversee board operations, and ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and functional responsibilities. Monitor financial performance and adherence to non-profit management best practices.
- Resource mobilisation: Support and participate in fundraising strategies, leveraging networks, and engaging with donors and stakeholders to secure necessary resources for the organisation's work.
- Building and leading the board: Ensure the board comprises members with diverse skills and perspectives. Lead recruitment, orientation, and training of board members and facilitate effective meetings and discussions, ensuring productive governance to advance the purpose and values of the organization.
- CEO support and evaluation: Support and maintain a constructive relationship with the CEO, creating a positive and strong working relationship to jointly set and achieve appropriate targets, staying in regular contact and acting as a sounding board to discuss strategic or staffing issues - coaching, supporting and challenging as necessary. Ensuring accountability for organisational performance.
- Ambassadorship: Act as the primary ambassador, representing and promoting the organisation's mission, values, and interests to external stakeholders, enhancing its reputation, and fostering collaboration, fundraising and promotional opportunities.

- The team looks at what issues would be best to tackle for a particular month

The difference you will make in this role
We are seeking an experienced senior fundraiser manager to join our team and lead in the development and delivery of our new fundraising strategy.
This is a new role where you would be instrumental in increasing our supporter base to provide us with an income to grow.
The ideal person would bring leadership and management experience and have a track record in strategy development, budgets, working to target and KPIs.
Working independently you would:
- Action a fundraising strategy approved by the chief executive & senior leadership team.
- Agree a departmental budget and work to achieve or exceed a fundraising target.
- Co-ordinate and manage fundraising, comprising community, trust, corporate, major donor and digital fundraising, across the organisation.
- Motivate a team of volunteers who engage in fundraising activities
- Build relationships with charitable trusts, foundations and other institutional funders.
- Lead funding applications with regards to charitable trusts, foundations, grants & competitions.
- Develop a strategy to attract corporate partners/sponsors.
- Prepare reports and give presentations on fundraising progress to the senior leadership team and the trustee board.
What are we looking for?
- Excellent written and oral presentation skills: Head of fundraising needs to make regular presentations to trustees, senior managers or potential donors/sponsors and write winning fundraising applications.
- Networking/Relationship Management skills: Head of fundraising will be called upon to represent the organisation to corporates & donors and persuade them that their cause is one they should contribute to.
- Effective project management skills: Ability to lead and co-ordinate fundraising initiatives with the support of volunteers.
- Digital skills: The organisation is centred around mobile/online technology and the Head of fundraising will need to be adept at using these technologies and be aware of their fundraising potential.
- Innovation skills: Strong ideas about how to hit fundraising targets in this climate.
- Budget management skills: You need to be able to work effectively with limited resources.

- Proven track record in developing and delivering fundraising strategies
- Knowledge of good fundraising procedures for the voluntary sector
- Knowledge of current fundraising guidelines and legislation
- Proven ability in producing effective, and inspiring proposals and funding reports
