About us

Who we are

A key part of our strategy is a statement of vision and purpose which describes the Charity's aspirations, impact and outcomes it would like to have both for our Service Users (the beneficiaries) and the wider community. The vision can be summarised as:

"Growth through opportunity to achieve richer, healthier and more rewarding lives" In order to create the best environment for this to happen we aim to:

·         Work with each person using an approach that is unique for that particular individual

·         Ensure that people can achieve their maximum potential and have full and meaningful lives

·         Used an outcome focus in all our work so that we can monitor our effectiveness and impact

·         Ensure that the Charity's property, assets and other resources are protected and managed appropriately

·         Ensure accountability as required by law and to others such as donors, beneficiaries, employees, volunteers and the general public

·         Provide excellent cost-effective services for the people we work with.

HISTORY

St George's St. George's Association was founded in 1885 as a mission to support homeless women and orphans. It was run by the Sisters of St Peters and included a training school for household and employment skills. The school was evacuated in the 1940's to Gloucestershire, still being run by nuns. In 1985 our present centre, Wellclose House in Cheltenham, was purchased and this has become a residential care home for ten women with moderate learning disabilities. The Charity has broadened its remit to include working with both men and women and encompass a wider range of disabilities.

Wellclose House Flats offer supported living. We have independent living units in the grounds which consist of four single bedsits and a two bedroomed bungalow. Three additional supported living houses have been established, in Brockworth (Ermin Park) in Gloucester (Highbank) and in Cheltenham (Vincent Court Flats). Our services are designed for people who require varying levels of assistance in order to fully realise their potential. The facilities on offer enable everyone we support to enjoy a high quality of life.

St Vincent's The Story of St Vincent's began on July 12th, 1952, when concern was expressed over the lack of facilities and support for children with Cerebral Palsy in Cheltenham.

In September 1952, a public meeting was organised and as a result, the Cheltenham Spastic Aid Society was formed. The objective was to provide an educational and recreational Centre for children with Cerebral palsy, children with no experience of school, no social contact with other children and no opportunity to develop their potential.

A large double garage owned by the Church Army was available to rent for one shilling a week. The plan was to convert the building into a classroom, install toilets and a kitchen. The work was carried out by members of the Cheltenham Round Table, parents of the children, members of the Spastic Aid Society and other interested organisation’s. The School which was named St Vincent's was officially opened on 25th September 1954.

St. Vincent's and St. George's joined into one organisation in 2009.

In 2022 following service users requests we rebranded the Charity to reflect the work and support we give, we are now Aim Up the name chosen by the people we support.
