The challenges of providing medical assistance and health care in humanitarian contexts are many and complex. Understanding of common presentations, health demographics and treatment options must be combined with an awareness and appreciation of the cultural and contextual factors at play, and the emergency itself.
This CPD Accredited course aims to introduce medical professionals to key considerations for a role or career in the humanitarian sector. The course will discuss humanitarian health architecture and roles and responsibilities between and with key agencies. Through the use of real life case studies and examples, participants will be challenged to consider scenarios and dilemmas, drawing on the humanitarian principles and medical standards.
Examples from the field will be provided by medical personnel recently returned from a humanitarian setting, who can share their direct experience and advice.

Course structure:
Registration will take place from 8.45 am on the first day. Training on the first day will run from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm, and on the second day from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
Each day is broken up into four sessions, separated by a lunch break and tea/coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. The second day of training begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Each day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions.
Participants will be actively encouraged to take part in classroom discussions, group work and a case study. The trainer will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of humanitarian work.
Day 1
After you have registered on the morning of the first day, the training begins with an introduction to the course, before a consideration of humanitarian principles, stakeholders and health priorities. Before lunch, time will be spent introducing common presentations you are likely to encounter in humanitarian contexts. In the afternoon you will consider the kinds of projects and kinds of roles available to medical and health care professionals in the sector.
Day 2
In the morning of day two you will consider culture and context and the impct of these on your ability to operate. You will have the opportunity to learn from a peer who has recent experience in a humanitarian context. After lunch you will be presented with scenarios and dilemmas from recent emergencies in order to consider your own motivations and potential challenges. The final session will consider personal resilience and the impact of coming home.
