Managing People and Projects in Emergencies (with credit-rated option)

Overview

Effective responses to complex emergencies require exceptional management skills. Managing people and projects can be difficult at the best of times, but being able to deliver quality outputs on time and under pressure is even more crucial during the chaos and stress of a complex emergency.

Managing People and Projects in Emergencies is a five-day course that aims to develop the competencies needed to manage people and projects effectively and apply them in a humanitarian context. The course focuses on the theoretical and practical application of management tools, techniques and approaches in the field, and on the nature of working in a humanitarian response. Through case studies and presentations, you will be able to put into practice the theoretical knowledge that you gain in the course.

• Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in relation to managing people and projects and devise a personal development plan to improve practice

The credit-rated assessment:

Managing People and Projects in Emergencies is a competency based, assessed course worth 10 Masters level credits that can be transferred to the Masters in Development and Emergency Practice (DEP) from Oxford Brookes University or other similar postgraduate qualifications.

Please note there is a 15% additional fee to take the course as credit-rated. 

Course Overview:

Registration will be from 8.45 am on Monday. Each day the course will run from 9 am and conclude at 5.30 pm. Each day is broken up into four sessions, separated by a lunch break and coffee/ tea breaks in the morning and afternoon.

From the second day, each day begins with a review of the topics covered the previous day to ensure that the concepts, tools, and frameworks are fully understood. Every day ends with a period of reflection, evaluation, and questions. 

Participants will be actively encouraged to take part in classroom discussions, group work and a case study. The trainers will draw on both theoretical and practical knowledge in order to make the experience and learning applicable to the realities of managing people and projects in the humanitarian sector.

Day 1

After registration and a welcome in the morning of the first day, the course will begin with an overview of the humanitarian context. You will then look at the role of the humanitarian manager. In the afternoon, the course will teach you about needs assessment, using a case study to help you to understand the key points in a practical setting. The subject of building a team will close the day.

Day 2

On the second day, you will discuss securing funding, followed by coordination and collaboration. The course will then examine project design and then project initiation. At the end of day two, you will learn methods of motivating others.

Day 3

The first session of day three will be spent on the topic of planning and implementing projects.  The workshop will then discuss the concept and practice of leadership and developing individuals.  Remote and distance management will be covered in the last session.

Day 4

Financial management will be covered in the first session. In the second session, you will learn about accountability as well as risk management. The majority of the afternoon will be spent on conflict management and negotiation, with time reserved for you to work on presentations that will be given the following day.

Day 5

The fifth day will begin with managing diversity. You will then examine aspects of project closure. Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting will be the subject of the next session. In the afternoon, you will have more time to prepare before later giving your presentation. The last session is reserved for wrapping up the course: a group debrief, recapping the key points, answering any lingering questions, individual reflection, action planning, and receiving your certificates of completion.

Who should attend?

The course is geared at project officers, project managers, logisticians, or generalist aid workers who manage people and/or budgets in the humanitarian sector. It would also suit people with some technical experience who want to vary their people and project management experience. This workshop is appropriate for people who want to move into a project management role and who have some understanding of humanitarianism at a theoretical and/or practical level. There are no entry requirements, but a basic understanding of project management tools, the humanitarian sector and a familiarity with Log Frames is expected. 

What is the credit-rated fee for?

All participants will be assessed on the in-class component of the assessment process and provided with feedback.

An additional charge of 15% of course fees applies for those wishing to complete the post-class written assessment.

The additional 15% charge can be paid at the time of the original course booking, or at any subsequent time before submission of the written assignment. Please note that the assessment fee must be paid before RedR can assess and provide feedback on your written assignment.

Payment of the credit-rating fee signals intent to complete the assessment process. The credit-rating fee is charged in line with RedR UK's agreement with Oxford Brookes University and is therefore non-refundable.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

The minimum age for this event is 18.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The nearest service is Vauxhall Station (Victoria line), approximately 5 minutes' walk.  Oval or Kennington Stations (Northern Line) are approximately 10 minutes’ walk. Buses 2 /3 / 36 / 44 / 59 /77 / 88 / 159/ 185 / 196/ 322 / 344 stop nearby.

What's the refund policy?

-For bookings cancelled two or more weeks before a course, administrative charges will apply. Applicants will be entitled to a refund of 85% of the course fees paid, or if places are available will be offered a transfer of 90% of the course fees paid onto the next instance of the course.
-For bookings cancelled one to ten working days* before a course begins, 25% of the course fee will be refunded (*during normal UK working days, Monday-Friday and working hours 9am-5pm).
-For bookings cancelled less than 24 hours (working days only) before a course, or after a course has started, no refund will provided.
-If the applicant chooses to transfer to another course and then cancels their booking a second time, neither a further transfer nor a refund will be offered.
-The refund must be claimed within two months from the cancelled course start date.
-Please note that unfortunately we are only able to cover our local bank charges and not the recipient’s bank charges when we make refunds.
-Refunds may take up to 30 days.
