Job description

The role

At the Canal & River Trust, we believe life’s better by water, and that the waterways we take care of have an important contribution to make to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies.

The West Midlands is the largest of our six regions, serving a diverse population of almost 5.3 million people. With Coventry City of Culture 2021 and Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 both just around the corner, we now have a fantastic opportunity to encourage people in the region to enjoy life by water and explore the possibilities on their doorstep.

Join us, as a Community Engagement Manager, and you’ll ensure we seize that opportunity with both hands, as you bring lots of innovative ideas and approaches to help us connect with, engage and influence communities up and down the waterway network. The role involves leading a 10-strong team, responsible for areas ranging from fundraising to youth engagement, and from volunteer development and coordination to events. You will also be working in close collaboration with colleagues across regional and national teams.

What you need

Given the large, positive impact this role will have across the region, we’re looking for someone who is already working at a senior level within a not-for-profit organisation, local authority or similar. Strong leadership will be the key to your success, so it’s important that you are an excellent communicator, influencer, negotiator and relationship manager, with a proven track record of delivering through teams. Other key areas of experience we are looking for include strategic partnership development, community programme delivery, and time spent working in multi-ethnic, super-diverse areas.

The waterways we look after contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. Our waterways are on the doorstep of 8 million people and reach some of the most deprived communities within the UK. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the wellbeing of our nation. Come and be part of it.
