About us
Who we are
The British Red Cross Society is the United Kingdom body of the worldwide neutral and impartial humanitarian network, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The society was formed in 1870, and is a registered charity with more than 32,500 volunteers and 3,500 staff. At the heart of our work is providing help to people in crisis, both in the UK and overseas. The Red Cross is committed to helping people without discrimination, regardless of their ethnic origin, nationality, political beliefs or religion.
Our culture and values
For the last 150 years, the British Red Cross has been here for humanity. The British Red Cross helps millions of people in the UK and 190 countries around the world get the support they need when disaster strikes. Together, we are the world's emergency responders.
Our fundamental principles bind together the National Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). This makes the British Red Cross part of a worldwide movement. The seven fundamental principles are: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntarty Service, Unity & Universiality.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
The British Red Cross is committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within our organisation and the wider community we serve. We actively work to dismantle racism, champion disability inclusion, and support individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations. We strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves.
We are a Disability Confident employer.
