About us
Who we are
For most of its history Cambridge City Foodbank has been run entirely by volunteers, proving food to people in need five days a week. Today, together with a team of employed staff, volunteers and partners across the city, we are working towards a future where no one is forced to turn to a food bank to survive.
Our vision is for a UK without the need for food banks.
We will provide emergency and affordable food, all the while there is a need for us. But food banks are not an inevitable part of our society. In one of the wealthiest nations in the world, no one should have to turn to a food bank to survive.
Our ongoing work includes:
- A network of Foodbank Welcome Centres in and around Cambridge providing three-day emergency parcels, as well as a hot drink, listening ear, and expert advice.
- Six Fairbite Food Clubs giving members access to a weekly shop, ongoing support and advice, and connection to the community through our partner organisations. Members pay a small membership fee which contributes to the sustainability of the network.
- Holistic support services enabling people to get the financial support they are entitled to.
- Participating in local and national campaigning which aims to tackle the root causes of poverty.
The power to end the need for food banks is in the community. Our Foodbank is powered by a 200-strong team of volunteers, public donations, collaborations with partners, and the ideas and insight of our members and visitors.
Our culture and values
We serve local people regardless of background, inspired by our Christian ethos and values.
These values shapes everything we do:
Compassion – We stand in solidarity with people in need and are motivated to work together to end poverty.
Dignity – We uphold the right of every person to be valued and respected for their own sake.
Justice – We are motivated by our desire for a more just society. It is not right that anyone should face poverty and hunger.
Community – We believe we have a responsibility to support one another in our community. To create change, we believe we must collaborate together for a fairer society.
Impact – We believe our work must be informed by evidence of what works and that we should use the resources we have been given wisely to create positive transformation.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
As part of our commitment to inclusion, diversity and equity actively encourage applications from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers who are re-entering work after a career break, people who are LGBT+, from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions and those with a lived experience of poverty as well as any other under-represented group in our workforce. We are committed to ensuring the safety and protection of our employees from all forms of harm.
