CPRE exists to promote the beauty, tranquillity and diversity of rural England by encouraging the sustainable use of land and other natural resources in town and country. We campaign strongly and tirelessly to protect and enhance the countryside throughout the county under the banner 'Speaking up for Surrey’s countryside and towns'. We have over 2,000 members and supporters and are actively involved in:
• highlighting the issues and concerns that CPRE is seeking to address
locally in Surrey;
• campaigning against current threats to the Surrey countryside;
• making a positive impact and attracting support;
• engaging the media and influencing decision-makers;
• increasing the membership of CPRE Surrey, attracting new volunteers
and raising new sources of income;
We work closely with CPRE National Office in campaigning on a broad range of issues including protection of the Green Belt, curbing urban sprawl beyond the boundaries of Surrey's towns and villages, and constructively opposing inappropriate development in the county. We have been active in persuading local planning authorities to manage change in a positive way which recognises the interdependence of town and country and puts priority on sense of place, distinctive character, landscape quality and community identity.
