We're a Home Improvement Agency (HIA) and we've been helping people to improve their homes for over 25 years. There are actually 200+ HIAs in England (for the national picture see foundations.uk.com or careandrepair-england.org.uk). Our purpose is to help people to retain their independence in a home that is warm, safe and secure. Originally, this was achieved through project-management of housing renovation, on behalf of our clients.
For many older people, a little bit of practical help makes all the difference to retaining independence (for example, in preventing the likelihood of a fall); installation of grab rails and stair rails; small thermal efficiency improvements and advice to keep warm without increasing energy costs; fitting and fixing locks, cupboards, doors, etc. Consequently, our agency has continued to thrive due to our trusted and experienced 'handyperson' services (minor improvement works).
Whilst all businesses/HIAs face funding challenges, our independence provides us with opportunities to diversify, to develop new partnerships. Thus, we have been able to respond to local needs and generate new sources of income (supporting our strategy of sustainability, during uncertain financial times).
We achieved a national award for innovation; we've been quoted in best practice guides and Government publications. But, we are most proud of independent feedback from our customers/clients (to Northamptonshire Trading Standards) about our Handyperson service. (We help 3000/4000 people each year, to improve their homes)
Our address has changed over the years, from sharing cupboard-sized offices (when the tea money was raided to pay an invoice!), through to our 'hybrid' unit (workshop, stores, etc on ground floor, bright open plan office plus facilities on first floor).
Chances are you'll know that voluntary sector working brings lows as well as highs (for services and clients). The size of our team has changed - over the past 12/18 months, long-standing members retired; two colleagues transferred with a 'lost' contract; Government reductions to local authority funding was assessed as a big risk ... we had to stop and take stock...
With lots of effort from our small team, we are recovering from that contract disappointment, we've strengthened existing partnerships and developed new ones.
This is where YOU come in!
Our Trustees volunteer their time; they deserve efficient secretariat support.
We need someone special to manage and support our small but enthusiastic team, whilst preparing to coach and develop those we wish to recruit (volunteers, graduate interns, Modern Apprentices).
With your help, we will configure our new Management Information Database making it our latest tool for analysing performance and reporting on targets and outcomes’ achievement.
We’re giving you a whole new opportunity to show off your talents; with your support, our Enterprise Director will be able to focus on marketing our services, to increase our establishment and our income; our Operations’ Manager will be able to concentrate on sharing his technical expertise with new and existing service partners. We will all be able to do what we do best!
