About us

Who we are

Approximately 982,000 people live with dementia in the UK, with that number set to rise to 1.4 million by 2040. Until a cure is found, we need to support people with dementia and their families to have active and fulfilled lives.

Research shows that meaningful activity and connection with nature have positive health and well-being benefits for people with dementia. Being supported to experience these benefits can bring improvements in quality of life. Yet many people living with dementia face barriers to accessing these benefits, resulting in an unnecessary decline in their physical, emotional and social well-being.

We are an award-winning charity that supports people with dementia in getting outdoors and experiencing the benefits of nature. We think differently about dementia, focusing on the individual rather than the condition and looking at what people can do rather than what they can’t. We have proven that with the right support, anything is possible.

How we can help:

  • Supported Dementia Breaks: We have offered fully supported dementia breaks for over a decade. We understand the complex and individual needs of people living with dementia and how carers can benefit from having the chance to relax and enjoy time with their loved one while we take care of all the planning and background tasks. Whether you’re looking for an alternative to respite in which everyone gets a rest or an opportunity to have an adventure together, we’ll support you to have the break you deserve.

  • Free training for family and friends: ‘Understanding Dementia Better’ and ‘Mood and Motivation’ are free online training sessions for family and friends supporting someone with dementia at home. These informal sessions offer you a chance to meet others in a similar situation and help you discover small, simple steps to make a big difference.

  • Training and Consultancy: As the only charity solely focused on dementia and nature, we are sector leaders in working with organisations in the blue, green, health and care sectors. We will work with you to create inclusive services so that people with dementia can engage more with nature and have regular outdoor experiences.

  • Research: All our work is rooted in the latest research. We also support other organisations' research by assisting with joint funding proposals or project ideas and sharing relevant research or resources you have written.

Our culture and values

Positivity

We look at what is possible, rather than what isn’t. We encourage ‘positive-risk’ taking that enables people with dementia to connect to nature for enjoyment and for their health and wellbeing.

Care

We put the individual first, not the condition. We listen and take time to understand what life is like for others. We will work with you to find solutions tailored to your circumstances.

Connection

We enable people to connect to the benefits of nature, themselves and their community. To enjoy passions, dreams and interests, and reduce isolation and loneliness.

Empowerment

We inform, inspire, and equip you to take action that suits your own circumstances. We work with you, supporting you to make the right choices.

Inclusivity

We believe support should be available for everyone living with dementia, and those who support them, regardless of gender, race, religion, ability or socio-economic status.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, and are keen to ensure that anyone who comes into contact with us and our services is treated with warmth, dignity and respect irrespective of who they are and what protected characteristics they may have. We are an equal opportunities employer and encourage applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, gender, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.
