The Diana Award was founded as a legacy to Diana, Princess of Wales’ belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.
Since 1999, the Diana Award has recognised 38,000 young people who have made a positive difference to their community. By shining the spotlight on these young people with the Diana Award, it establishes them as role models to other young people. But receiving a Diana Award is only the beginning.
Through the Diana Network and our anti-bullying and mentoring programmes, we engage, encourage and motivate young people to keep up the good work!
The Diana Award Is an award for life and celebrates the amazing achievement of inspirational young people who defy expectation and challenge negative stereotypes that are often applied to them. The Award given to over 3,000 young people nominated each year between the ages of 9 and 18 in the following categories: Diana Active Campaigner, Diana Anti-bullying Champion, Diana Champion Fundraiser, Diana Champion Volunteer, Diana Courageous Citizen
The Diana Antibullying Ambassadors Programme aims to reduce bullying using a well tested peer led approach. We know from research that in the UK, due to bullying, around 160,000 children miss school every day and there are over 33 million absences each year. 42% of those bullied miss school through truancy.
The programme helps improve pupil behaviour and attendance by identifying, protecting and supporting children at risk of harm and equipping teachers in dealing with bullying behaviour. This programme works to tackle bullying behaviour at a young age, reducing the individual and society costs associated with poor education, poor health and the criminal justice system with its proven impact on pupil attainment, achievement, behaviour and school attendance, the popular service is now paid for by schools and local authorities.
The Diana Network is a bespoke programme designed to assist Diana Award holders gain skills that will help both with their personal development and employability prospects. It includes life skills, personal development and professional skills training and progressive pathways (eg work experience, internships and job shadowing opportunities). Importantly, the Diana Network programme also provides opportunities for like-minded individuals to communicate with each other – relationships are formed for life and many share learning and work together on community projects
The Diana Training and Mentoring Programmes builds on the success of and learning from our Antibullying Programme. In 2012 we developed this programme to help the most at risk and vulnerable young people through skills training and support.
Participating Diana Award holders who have achieved something remarkable themselves become Young Mentors. Each mentee is matched with a peer mentor that suits them. The Diana Award holder mentors provide regular support and understanding to their mentees to help them overcome identified obstacles and achieve their potential.
