About us
Who we are
GoodGym helps you get fit by doing good. We’re a group of runners, walkers, and cyclists who combine regular exercise with helping our communities.
The work of the charity is the following:
- Contacting and connecting isolated and lonely older people
- Ensuring the safety of GoodGymers and older people
- Providing and maintaining infrastructure for connecting physical activity with volunteering
Our charitable objectives, as registered with the charity commission are the following:
For the public benefit to promote good citizenship by offering opportunities to combine physical exercise with volunteering, in particular assisting local community projects with physical tasks and providing ad hoc and on-going support to isolated, lonely and older individuals.
Our Mission
We aim to create a world in which no-one is left alone and in which everyone’s exercise is meaningful. We aim to operate in every city in the world. In the short term we aim to operate in every city in the UK.
The charity's work is generously supported by hundreds of GoodGymers who donate their time and money to support us to operate. GoodGym relies on these donations in order to reach and support the most isolated and lonely, to ensure GoodGym is safe and to provide support to all GoodGymers.
Our culture and values
We run, walk or cycle to help out older people with practical tasks that they are no longer able to do on their own. Missions give us a reason to exercise and make a big impact on someone's life too.
Change a lightbulb for an older person so that they can see in the dark
Do some gardening so that an older person can feel independent again
Move furniture so that an older person can get their home back in order
Run, walk or cycle to an older person’s home and help them with something they are struggling to do themselves.
Get there
Run, walk or cycle solo from where you are to get to the older person's home.
Help out
Go solo or meet other GoodGymers to complete the task.
Head back
Run, walk or cycle your return route.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
GoodGym has a goal of creating healthier, happier and better connected communities. To do this successfully, we want to represent the diversity of people in those communities. We will proactively work even harder to achieve our ambitious inclusion and diversity goals. We've failed in the past but we are committed to doing better and persevere until we succeed. We understand that actions speak louder than words when it comes to these topics. We’re acting, we want to add more transparency to the process and regularly update everyone on what we are doing. Hopefully this will increase your confidence in our process, as well as enable us to hold ourselves accountable.
This is a space to talk about all aspects of inclusion and diversity openly, with respect but not shying away from uncomfortable conversations. We will be sharing stories from across the GoodGym community and encouraging an open dialogue. We will also be sharing the actions we are taking to bring about positive change.
We believe that inequality is ingrained in all levels in society, both consciously and subconsciously. As a starting point, a lot of our discussions recently have been centered around anti-racism, how we can do better and making GoodGym actively anti-racist. As our work on inclusion and diversity progresses, this page will discuss and cover a wider range of social issues.
