Grand Union Orchestra is a music-led charity that brings together world-class artists and diverse communities to create powerful, socially engaged work through collaborative, cross-cultural performances. The Company aims to show how intercultural music can help build a just, inclusive and imaginative society.
Through a wide range of productions, recordings, and educational programmes, we celebrate cultural heritage while empowering new generations of artists.
The Company also inspires creatives within our local communities, while promoting social cohesion and providing a positive narrative around migration and cultural diversity.
We aim for a continuous cycle of creation through learning, collaboration, experimentation and community engagement.
Our culture and values
Celebrating diverse and live music
We oppose the growing displacement of artists caused by the unchecked rise of AI, the loss of grassroots music venues, and the steady erosion of music education across the UK. We respond by delivering high-quality live performances and creative workshops that honour cultural traditions, nurture the next generation, and keep music authentic, human, and artist-led.
Standing against racism and negative narratives
We actively challenge the rise of nationalist, racist, and colonial narratives by centering social justice and the lived experiences of migrants and asylum seekers in our work. Through new collaborations and a marketing campaign to share Grand Union’s vision, strengths and ethos, we amplify local, diverse and underrepresented voices, connecting their stories with communities across the UK, enhancing cohesion and cultural exchange.
Nurturing a diverse workforce
This brings new ideas and ways of working to develop a strong audience and participant base.
We will offer mentoring and development opportunities for emerging artists from under-represented communities.
