Our Vision
Headway Cardiff aims to support acquired brain injury survivors and their families to gain an understanding and acceptance of the changes that have occurred. Led by the individual, we empower them to reach their full potential and rediscover life.
Acquired brain injury can happen to anyone at any time. There is no time to prepare or adjust.
What is an acquired brain injury (ABI)?
An ABI is any brain injury that occurs since birth.
• Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) - accident, fall or assault,
• Stroke
• haemorrhage
• Infection such as Meningitis and Encephalitis
• hypoxic/anoxic brain injury (lack of oxygen to the brain)
• Tumour
• Surgery
At Headway Cardiff we help people adjust to the many changes that occur following an injury. These vary from individual to individual and can be physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioural or hormonal.
Although often subtle, these changes frequently have a devastating impact on a person’s ability to live independently and to manage relationships.
Our services are designed to support the individual and family through these changes and to help them both emotionally and practically.
Unfortunately year on year the numbers of people surviving ABI is increasing and survivors often require lifelong support.
Our current services include:
A specialist Day Centre (5 days a week)
A Counselling service
A weekly social group
Weekly activity groups (walking and cycling)
2 monthly social groups
1:1 information and support
Carers groups
Welfare Benefit assistance
We are a small, dedicated team who strive to help service users in a holistic, positive and imaginative way.
