About us

Who we are

Our vision is for a Wilder Herefordshire: More Nature Everywhere

With the support of our 7,500 members and over 300 volunteers, we care for 60 Nature Reserves, work with others to restore nature to our rural and urban landscapes and inspire people of all ages to discover and take action to defend Herefordshire's wildlife.

Our culture and values

Our vision is for more nature everywhere, for everyone.

Herefordshire is a special and unique county. The tapestry of the natural world is rich, with our iconic rivers the Wye and Lugg, our Herefordshire floodplain meadows, the wonderful wooded valleys of the Marches, our traditional orchards and the uplands of the Black Mountains and Malverns.

We all need nature – for sustainable food production, good health, mental wellbeing and a thriving economy - but, facing an ecological and climate crisis, nature needs us more than ever too. Our mission, therefore, is to lead local action in our county, enabling our communities, businesses and wider partners to bring nature back.

To recover nature, we need 30% of all land in our county properly managed for nature by 2030. And that’s good for other 'public goods’, including carbon sequestration, climate adaptation and mitigation, and nutrient neutrality, too. Working together, we can create bigger, wilder, more connected landscapes across our county, so nature, people and local economies can thrive.

To get there we have three strategic goals: putting nature in recovery; taking action for nature; sustaining our organisation's future.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Our vision is to bring people closer to nature, with land rich in wildlife. Our mission is a society where nature matters, where everyone has a strong and personal connection with wildlife and wild places.

However, we recognise the conservation sector is one of the least diverse in the UK and we know that not everyone has equal access to nature. This is why we need to reflect, learn and change our approach in the way we work so that we can engage and inspire people from all backgrounds, cultures, identities and abilities to take action for wildlife, to protect it and engage in nature’s recovery.

We are committed to making positive steps to bridge the gap of inequity in the sector, which is why we are addressing and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in all that we do. We want to better understand the barriers that face underrepresented communities in accessing nature, and work in partnership to create an inclusive landscape that reflects all walks of life. Nature is for everyone.
