About us
Who we are
HIAS+JCORE is the leading UK Jewish response to refuge and asylum. Led by our Jewish values and history of compassion, responsibility, solidarity, and partnership, we empower displaced people to flourish as they rebuild their lives here.
We work in three key ways: advocating, mobilising, and supporting. Firstly, our team lobbies politicians and policy makers, sharing our Jewish-values led vision for a fairer, more welcoming asylum system, and ensures better, more compassionate narratives are heard in the press. Secondly, we lead a bold Jewish movement for refugees, through projects like Refugee Shabbat and our Student Refugee Ambassador Programme. Thirdly, we directly support refugees and people seeking asylum, overcoming challenges together and empowering them to thrive.
Our culture and values
Our mission
HIAS+JCORE exists to enable refugees and asylum seekers to flourish as a part of a society free from xenophobia and racism.
Our values
We are led by our Jewish values and history of Compassion (Rachamim), Responsibility (Arvut), Solidarity (Shlemut) and Partnership (Gishur).
Compassion (Rachamim). Compassion, according to Maimonides, is a defining characteristic of a Jewish person. We need to shine out the light of compassion on others in need.
Responsibility (Arvut). Jewish people are asked to be ‘responsible’ for each other. So we as a people should share responsibility with the wider world and this should drive us to help those seeking refuge and asylum.
Solidarity (Shlemut). We are not complete without others. This value should drive us to work together with other communities in order to solve problems and work toward a more compassionate society.
Partnership (Gishur). We believe in collaboration with individuals and organisations. This will be an act of bridging between different worldviews and communities. But in partnership we believe that more change can be achieved.
