About us
Who we are
The Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) is the UK's professional body for musicians and a nationally recognised subject association for music.
Since 1882, we have been dedicated to promoting the importance of music and protecting the rights of those working in the music profession. We support 11,000 members across the UK and Ireland with our unrivalled legal advice and representation, comprehensive insurance and specialist services.
Our members come from all areas of the music profession and from a wide variety of genres and musical backgrounds.
We campaign tirelessly in support of musicians' rights, music education and the profession as a whole. We are a financially independent not-for-profit organisation with no political affiliation. This independence allows us the freedom to campaign on any issue affecting musicians.
Our culture and values
Music is vital. But it wouldn’t exist without the people who make it happen. To ensure that we can all enjoy the music we love, and nurture the musicians of tomorrow, we must support and empower the musicians of today.
Through events, training and award-winning resources, the ISM Trust equips music professionals with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed in their career.
We cover key topics from legal and business, copyright and royalties, and finance and tax, to music teaching, diversity and inclusion, and musicians’ health. Our projects are regularly delivered in partnership with leading experts, charities and organisations.
A career in music can be incredibly rewarding, but we know it can also be financially challenging. Our professional development is made available for free wherever possible, to support as many musicians as we can.
