About us
Who we are
Kalayaan is the UK expert on the rights of migrant domestic workers. Migrant domestic workers are often trafficed to the UK and face condition of domestic servitude. Domestic workers, brought the the UK on tied visas work withing homes of their employers, invisible and isolated. They are frequently denied their passport, work without pay or rest, receive inadequate food, are prevented from leaving the house, have no privacy when sleeping and are often psychologically or physically abused. Our IAA accredited lawyers offer clients the opportunity to understand their rights, to regularise their visa status or to refer survivors of modern slavery and trafficking into the National Referral Mechanism. Our community engagement sessions offer support, solidarity and information to clients as they rebuild their lives. We work alongside the community of migrant domestic workers to campaign for wider change to prevent further abuse and will continue our political advocacy until we achieve the legislative change that will prevent exploitation, abuse and suffering in the future.
Our culture and values
Kalayaan is a grassroots organisation and we work shoulder to shoulder with those who have lived experience of the Overseas Domestic Worker visa and it's dangerous consequences. We collaborate closely with sector partners to campaign for change. Our staff are experienced and dedicated and we are grateful for the large team of volunteers who offer their valuable skills and time to support our mission.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
