About us

Who we are

Climate change is scary and we don’t gloss over that, but we do highlight all the benefits that come from a decarbonised world. We believe it’s possible to reduce international emissions in line with a 1.5°C pathway to zero by 2050 and we find bold and impactful solutions to make that goal a reality. We are a small but mighty team of lawyers, economists and policy experts dedicated to achieving climate justice.

To us, that means the principles of global equity and sustainable development are at the heart of our mission. Our work focuses on equity, justice, and accountability, and ensures no one is left behind on the journey to global decarbonisation.

In many sectors, changes in law and regulation are needed to speed up the pathway to decarbonisation and this is where we focus our efforts. These sectors include but are not limited to, shipping, aviation, buildings, fisheries and energy.

What our work involves

  • Producing persuasive legal analysis which pinpoints possible regulatory solutions and robust policy changes in complex sectors. Read the publications we’ve produced.

  • Providing research, consultation and networking facilitation services on shipping decarbonisation and the importance of a just and equitable transition at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). We work closely with climate vulnerable Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to ensure they can contribute to the IMO's emissions agenda. Find out more about how we support climate vulnerable countries.

  • Leading the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator (SASHA) Coalition. This brings together leaders from the aviation and shipping industries to raise awareness of the vital role that green hydrogen and direct air capture (DAC) must play in the decarbonisation of these sectors. Visit the SASHA Coalition website.

  • Harnessing the power of the law as a strategic tool to help us to solve some of the biggest problems facing our planet. We think strategically about what change we need to see and the ways in which the law can help us to get there, and take action ourselves or in collaboration with others to help bring this to fruition. Our culture and values

Our culture and values

Opportunity Green was established in October 2021. We’re a young organisation, but we’re proud of what we’ve achieved in a short time, and this is due largely to our collaborative nature and can-do attitude.

The climate crisis is urgent, and we have to work quickly – and together – to address it effectively. This motivates us to form partnerships across the board – whether that’s with other charities and NGOs or with international governments, decision makers and industry leaders.

We work hard to achieve our goals, but personal wellbeing and equality are also at the heart of our working culture. Our team works a four-day week (for no less pay) and has flexible working arrangements and progressive family leave policies so they can also focus on what matters to them outside of work.

Interested to find out more? We’re always looking to talk to others who share our passion for driving forward just and equitable climate action. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you’d like to know more about what we do.

What we value

  • Honesty: Climate change is scary and we don’t gloss over that. But we do highlight all the benefits that come from a decarbonised world, bringing legal, economic and policy expertise to everything we do.

  • Collaboration: We work with other organisations, people and governments who share our values to produce better outcomes. We approach every project and potential collaborator with kindness and respect.

  • Good governance: Both internally and externally, we recognise the value of our team and partners. We also rigorously assess whether our advocacy is creating change and course correct as necessary.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

What diversity & inclusion means to us

Opportunity Green is committed to ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion in our working and hiring practices.

We are serious about creating and sustaining a working environment in which everyone has an equal opportunity to fulfil their potential irrespective of sex, gender identity, pregnancy or parental responsibilities, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs, marital status, civil partnership status, race, ethnic origin, colour, nationality, national or ethnic origins, disability, age or part-time status.

We understand that climate change is a race issue and a gender issue but we know diverse experiences and perspectives are not adequately represented in climate policy and the non-profit sector. We want to change this. Opportunity Green is dedicated to broadening opportunities for groups that are underrepresented in climate spaces, and to building an inclusive team where people of different backgrounds can thrive.

While we know we have a way to go, our aim is to make our workforce and practices truly representative and inclusive of all sections of society.

We are committed to creating an environment in which our employees and partners feel valued and respected, no matter their background or identity.  We have a range of progressive, employee-centred policies and practices to ensure the wellbeing of our team.

We make sure to review our policies and practices regularly, engaging with all employees to strive for a fair and supportive working environment.

We strive to make our recruitment process as accessible as possible and allow every applicant to showcase their full potential regardless of gender, racial or ethnic identity or socioeconomic background. To this end, if applying for a vacancy at Opportunity Green please use our Application Guide  found on our website to find out what to expect in the hiring process.

RACE report

The RACE Report initiative is the UK’s largest analysis of the racial diversity of the environmental charity and funder sector. RACE stands for Racial Action for the Climate Emergency. The initiative was launched by a group of environmental nonprofit organisations in the UK in April 2022.

Opportunity Green joined the RACE report initiative in 2024 as part of our commitment to inclusion and diversity. You can view our transparency card for 2024. This now forms our baseline for further work on inclusion for racial diversity as we continue to critically engage with this topic and look for actions to implement in support of our goals.

Read our blog on the launch of the fourth RACE Report in February 2025  on our website for more information.
