About us
Who we are
“Our child has grown in confidence, his skills have developed and his personality has shone through since attending The Peter Pan Nursery for Children with Special Needs. There has been a massive decline in his challenging behaviours, therefore we as a family have more confidence which extends not just to the nursery and at home but in other social environments. More importantly, we enjoy our little boy.” The Peter Pan Nursery exists to maximise the potential of children with special needs. Peter Pan Nursery was originally formed in 1969 as a play group for children with special needs and has grown into the specialist educational and developmental service it is today. It is from this background that the setting has retained the name “Nursery” despite not being a traditional day-care facility. Children accessing the setting attend a minimum of one specialist 2 hour session a week. It is rare for a child to access the nursery for more then 5 hours a week. During the sessions the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework is delivered to children as well as staff undertaking additional developmental work with the child to ensure that they receive the best possible start. The Nursery provides specialist, sessional, care to children with special needs. The service offered by the nursery is unique for the area and as a result the nursery supports children from across Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent, Cheshire and the surrounding areas. The children cared for by the nursery have a wide range of disabilities, conditions and syndromes such as Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, Autism, Visual and Hearing Impairments, Physical delays and Speech and Language delays. The Peter Pan Nursery has to raise £250,000 a year to keep the doors open. It currently costs the nursery £50 per child per session for a child to attend the nursery. This cost is made up of the expected salary cost (calculated on a 1-1 basis) of a nursery nurse, food costs, utilities and a percentage share of budgeted equipment and art supply costs. Parents make a contribution of £9 towards this cost, the difference is sought through fundraising activity and the support of trusts. Without the support of our local community, businesses and trusts we would be unable to continue to offer the level of care and support that we currently do.
