About us

Who we are

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) was founded in 1505 by Royal Charter granted by King James IV. From the discoveries of Simpson and Lister to modern-day pioneers of medicine and dentistry who are developing simulation, VR and robotics, the College has been a seat of learning and advancement for over 500 years.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is the oldest Surgical College in the world with a prestigious network of over 32,000 professionals in over 140 countries across the world, touching every stage of the career path from medical student to consultant.

The College is home to Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and members of the Surgical and Dental teams who put Patient Safety at the heart of everything they do. Our high-quality education and examinations ensure that standards are upheld across all specialties and in all countries.

Our culture and values

Our Values of Inclusivity, Integrity, Innovation, Respect and Professionalisam underpin who we are, how we behave, and the ways in which we work together across every aspect of the life of the College. They determine how we will deliver our ambitious Vision, Mission, and Strategy. Our Values are the principles that guide all our actions and decisions which, in turn, will shape the culture of our organisation. They apply to everyone who is part of the life of the College, our staff, and our members.  We strive to embed these Values in everything that we do.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

The College is also committed to recruiting the person who is most suited to the particular post, based solely on the applicant's abilities, qualifications, experience and merit as measured against the job description and person specification. The College is committed to the principles of equal opportunities and declares its opposition to any form of less favorable treatment, whether through direct or indirect discrimination accorded to employees or job applicants.
